In 1983, the Cold War detente became destabilized by a new weapons program: the Strategic Defense Initiative, or as it became known, Star Wars. The Soviets hatched a secret plan to strike back against Reagan's new program. They had discovered a new radioactive isotope, Tolstoium-317, that could turn gentle creatures into ravenous killing machines. They infiltrated the U.S., building underground bunkers stocked with Ty-317, ready to turn our animal friends against us. Their goal: overthrow democracy by mutating our horses.

Today, the Soviets are long gone, but their secret bunkers remain, leaking Ty-317 into our barns and stables. You need to vanquish this relic Cold War threat and save the U.S.A.

ScreenShot.jpg

Your Goal: Free the horses from the threat of mutation, i.e unstable them.

This is a very silly game. The controls are simple. You can only do two things:

  • Click on Ty-317 canisters to detonate them
  • Use the space bar to extend control rods

The rest of the game mechanics happen as a result of these actions. Each level, you're trying to get enough energy to your drone (the little patriotic rocket thing) to move it along its preprogrammed course and up through the culvert to the horse stable. The drone gains energy from the explosion of the Ty-317 canisters. The closer the drone is to an exploding canister, the more energy it will receive, and the farther it can go. The energy is related to the square of the distance to the canister, so a canister right under the drone will charge it a lot, while one farther away will charge it hardly at all.

Challenges:

  • The exploding canisters are unstable. When they blow up, they emit particles that can trigger other canisters to detonate.
  • If you overcharge your drone, it will explode, and your horses will fall victim to the commies. It is very easy to overcharge the drone if it is near a bunch of exploding canisters that go off all at once.
  • If use up all your canisters and still don't charge your drone enough, it will be unable to complete its path, and you will end up with mutant horses and lose the level.

Hints:

  • Canisters give way more power to your drone when it is close by, so it can be good to click a canister as the drone passes. Good timing can help a lot.
  • Because the canisters explode unpredictably, sometimes you'll get lucky or unlucky
  • Some levels have random arrangements of canisters, and a particular arrangement might be very difficult to beat. In that case, just restart the level for a new setup.
  • Control rods do three things:
    1. they stop your drone from charging, even if canisters are going off nearby, so you can save your drone from overcharging.
    2. they stop the drone from moving, even if it has energy to use
    3. they provide a barrier to particles from explosions, so they can keep chain-reaction explosions from happening

All levels are winnable. Levels #6 and #7 can be pretty challenging, and they can have a lot of luck involved, but careful use of your control rods can help you control the situation better.

Theme:

I tried to use the theme in a bunch of different ways: - The Cold War was an unstable geopolitical situation - The conceit of the game is that SDI made it more unstable - The radioactive canisters are unstable and can go off at any time, creating cascading chains of explosions - Your goal is to free horses from their barns (i.e. unstabling them). Get it? Get it? It's the whole joke. Really.

Tools:

This is an HTML5 game that uses the CraftyJS JavaScript library for games. For sound, I relied entirely on my mouth as modified through GoldWave audio. For graphics, I relied on PowerPoint and GIMP. For three 3D models, the pipe, the drone, and the isotope canisters, I used Wings 3D. I wrote the one little piece of music in NoteFlight. I make use of two main fonts: Kremlin by Vic Feiger and AudioWide by Brian Bonislawski, plus a little bit of Ink Free by Steve Matteson for some of the graffiti in the bunkers. I modified a couple of bits of old Soviet imagery to create some of the bunker decoration visual elements, but they were heavily reworked and modded by me, and I think any of those should be fine under the derivative work rules for the Compo.

Fun and interesting puzzle game, some levels rely on luck a bit too much though. Good job!

Gameplay is a little RNG, but 10/10 for the shitposting.

That was a great game! Love the pun on the theme. Enjoyed the puzzles; could definitely see this as one of those mobile games people play for years. Great work!

Okay, I love this. I was absolutely losing it while playing this game. What's great is that it's both a joke and a really solid puzzle game. It's so funny. I love this so much. I can't stop laughing about "The Damn horses ate jimmy" and "The horses have seized the means of production"

I love this so much. Directly up my alley.

Interesting concept, I love chain reaction games. I enjoyed the humor and really good for a Compo entry. I see what you mean about getting lucky or unlucky sometimes with how the canisters will blow up. I liked that you let us just go to the next level anyways to see what else the game had. I had fun, and again GREAT job for a Compo!

This one definitely had some good laughs! And despite turning up the overall roughness for some extra silliness, a surprisingly compelling main mechanic to boot. Nice work!

I like the unique take on the theme, puzzles were a little too RNG in some cases for me and the sound was overwhelming when chain reactions + failure happened. Nice little bit of humor and voice-overs. Solid effort but not for me personally.

Very unique puzzle game! Voice overs were a nice touch. Presentation was like some kind of strange 2000's doomsday website. Cool inspiration for an aesthetic if that's what you were going for.

This is a really nice game!

I had fun and completed all the levels. I really like the creative backstory and the humor.

The puzzles sometimes felt a bit too random and luck-based. I solved some of the puzzles in a way I don't think they were supposed to be solved in (like randomly clicking and mashing space until it worked).

Also I sometimes got into a situation where I ran out of fuel while inside the finishing tube, and the game had shown me the losing menu, but the horses were still un-stabled.

All in all, this is a solid entry, good job!

I struggled a bit with the *unstable* nature of a few puzzles, but it was nice that the game allowed me to skip levels so I could see the entire game anyway. A fresh idea and a solid execution, keep it up!

This game is crazy in the best possible way! As was said previously, it's sometimes a little bit too random, but in other senses it's very nicely put together.

No soviet DeathBot will stop me from prevailing and "un-stableing" those poor tormented horses!
A lot of references i dont get in this game but the puzzles were neat looking away from the luck factor.

I would wish that your drone still gained energy while the control rods were down, at least from the cell you are currently in(could get smashed by the rods if you were in their path).

Graphics were a bit all over the place, it felt kind of messy if that makes sense. The stable, horses and the grass was nice though! And i really loved the audio ques you had put in haha.

All in all it was a nice game, I had fun with it!

Very solid base idea. And well implemented. It was fun. I forgot time while playing. A lot of references of the commentator I did not understand, but funny the ones I did understand. Good, really. First game I was in the flow and forgot everything around!!!

Very cool, made me giggle ^^#

The audio commentary are funny as f*** :stuck_out_tongue:

I'd say it gets a bit frustrating 'cause of the random nature of the game - good fun nonetheless

Incredible you did all this by yourself in 48h - kudos to you!

Do you ever partake in game jams as part of a team?

Keep it up, thanks for the giggles fam :grinning:

Really enjoyed this, although I did end up skipping a few levels. Got lucky with that robot at the end though!
Mechanic is nice and novel and it's impressive how much you managed to explore of it in a compo. The audio and humor are the standout aspects for me.

The Skip Level is a great add. I may or may not have lost on a purpose a few times just to listen to broadcasts. One tiny tweak: there's a few text boxes that have a button shadow that aren't buttons. It's a little confusing at first.

Amusing game. Feels a bit weird that the control rods halt the current movement of the drone as well as keeping it from gaining energy. Also, since the power fills up so quickly it can be hard to judge when to use the control rods and feels like it adds even more the RNG feeling of the game. Funny to see the theme tackled in both the instability of the actions and the unstabling of possibly mutated horses.

The game won't work for me. I can click the cannisters, but pressing Space to extend arms doesn't work. I can't do it before moving or during movement. Can it only occur in certain places? At the mouse location? I couldn't get it to work.

I somehow got to level 3 and thoroughly enjoyed all the news anchor lines after my fail attempts though!

Congrats on finishing this!

@harrison-dunn Sorry about the trouble. If a level has control rods, they should extend with space and retract when released - mouse location doesn't matter. I wonder if a different browser would work better, or if you have a non-traditional or non-western keyboard? Anyway, thanks for playing, and sorry for the brokenness.

@dob are the control rods fixed objects in the environment? Should I be able to see them? i'm using a traditional keyboard. using chrome, too.

@harrison-dunn They're little gray boxes, and they're pretty obvious when they extend. They don't show up until level 4, so it's likely you didn't get to them now that I re-read your original post. Sorry about that. Here's a pic of them partially extended.

Lol, level 7 is so infuriating, just turn around little dude the barn's right behind you... ![chrome_MSw8viAcs1.png](///raw/0af/e1/z/4801d.png)

Interesting little game, I liked the little news report clips, although I died enough that they started looping. Mutant horse noise became very grating during level 7's restart hell. Thought it was interesting that you could go to next level without beating the previous level, which came in handy when I accidentally level skipped by clicking next level instead of restart and had to refresh the page to get back to that level. Level 7 feels way too random compared to the other slightly random levels. Boss level was way too easy in comparison.

I wish there were some kind of tense actiony music or tense spy music; I'm glad for the sound effects, but the overall game could really use a good ambience. Good work overall though, a lot of takes on being unstable!

@papabirb Thanks for the extensive commentary! Yeah, Level 7 is pretty flaky, but I got good enough while playing that I win it every 3-5 tries. Background music would have been nice, but 48 hours is only so long  Thanks for playing.

Great! Love the humor. The random levels were a little frustrating, but I made it through them all. On the final level I clicked "end game" since it was right of a canister I needed to click on, and that was rather frustrating, to have to click back through to get to the appropriate level. Also, great to see a fast loading web game (not using Unity ^_^).

Humor is amazing: 5 stars

My only complaint in that regard is the conservative jab: we aren't stupid, we just have different views from leftists. (although I will admit that some conservatives are that stupid, so are some leftists ).

Amazing game, loved the graphics and the gameplay! I couldn't get past level 5, but I think that's just me being bad. 'Twould have been better with some background music though, or some ambient sfx. Overall, nice entry!

I wish thing were a bit more deterministic. It felt like the chain reactions were a bit random. Maybe this is just me not fully understanding the mechanics, but especially on the third level, I'd find the reactions different each time I played.

The voice work was a lovely touch.

Nice work!
