Diamonds in the Rough by animawish

[raw]
made by animawish for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

"Diamonds in the Rough" is a chaotic card game that pits you against the deadliest forces of nature (snakes and bombs) in a mad-grab for precious treasure (diamonds). Snatch up as many diamonds as you can before the bombs destroy them, but don't be too hasty - those snakes definitely bite!

It took me a while to understand how the game works but it was really fun overall. Nice to see Love2D devs in LD!

A bit difficult to understand how it works, but it's really catchy. I'm surprise with the amount of game modes you made in just three days!

Super creative gameplay! Trying to develop strategies around the snakes, bombs, and magnifying glasses is really interesting, and I also love the variety in gamemodes. Really well done!

The mechanics on this is so well thought out! Only thing I'd suggest is that the tutorial needs to be just a tad more on the digestable side, the way it was set up was a tiny bit too text-dump-ey for something you view before you ever try playing the game. I had to play the game, go back to the tutorial, then go back to playing the game before I really understood what was going on. The choice of number of elements was perfect though, and the way that the snakes imitate the bombs, which you're incentivized to recklessly works so well! The way the magnifying glass works is so clever too, and felt so good with the UX touches. Really great job overall!

Actually extremely fun, all the elements interact nicely with each other, you don't get neither over nor underwhelmed, a lot of different decks is great, the silly kiddish drawn art is a perfect fit and is very well done, it kinda mixes minesweeper puzzles with deckbuilding games, simply beautiful, well done!

Brilliant idea, really loved playing it! The different decks meant different minigames inside this one game which got me playing for a lot longer then other games! Super well done, whens the steam release?

Cool game! I like how the mechanics are made and used. I'd love to see this as a final product;

I love everything about this game. The mechanics are really well thought out -- I lost count of the number of snakes I clicked on hoping they were bombs. The graphics are really charming. It has so many games modes. Just great overall.

P.S. It's nice to see other games made with LÖVE :-)

Very neat concept. The fact that it was simple worked really well in tandem with the variety of game modes. Everyone involved (three of us) enjoyed the tension and uncertainty. Well done! An expanded version might include some audio, maybe more polished art (big maybe, the current style is very charming), and new card types.

It took me a bit to understand how yo play it, maybe the tutorial could be polished a bit more. Simple graphics but they do the job! Thanks to you, I now know LÖVE :blue_heart:

I was a bit confused in the beginning by the shaking snakes, but when I understood that it felt quite solid. Perhaps when bitten, the cards lost should not insta-vanish from the hand, but do so with some animation to make it a bit clearer what happens with the hand and how that relates to the new cards appearing. I also wonder, I'm not sure exactly how it works now, but it seemed to me that non of the appearing cards could be snakes or bombs... which makes it less interesting flipping those cards since they all can be safely picked. But all in all a solid game!

My favorite game style. Card Game <3 I love them, how did you have the idea ? I'm interested.
By the way i loved it, simple and if you push a little, tactical :) Good job !

Thanks so much for the nice comments everyone!

@unagiv the kernel idea was the basic behavior of the bomb cards, and everything else kind of unfolded organically in the development process

Extremely fun game, after I started understanding it a bit more. The visuals are also pretty nice!

Those pesky snakes, making me drop my cards :snake:

I like the visual style! Lacks audio (even simple sound effects would do), but the core idea is well implemented. After winning (I think I won? I'm not certain) my screen flashes quickly and then the game screen becomes black and unresponsive. Is this expected?

@antbrl that is not expected :scream: Which deck were you playing with? What's your operating system?

I had a lot of fun playing this game. The different cards work really well together to make each of the game modes fun on their own. I'd love to see this expanded on!

Love to see LÖVE entries. Good idea for mechanics. I like how both snakes and bobs shake the same, making it a risk move to either try picking them up or leaving and hoping it's not bomb. The art is also well fitted to gameplay. Different game modes (card decks - I assume they are the same each time per mode; with exception of chaos) is nice cheap way to make game more replayable.

I also like how you get choice to use magnifying glass and potentially reveal snakes making it more difficult, or just show where are value cards. My only disappointment is that it didn't seem worth using magnifying glass, especially at the start, as using would still tick turn timer. So generally it seems not worth picking it and using it. 2 turns to pick and use glass vs just 2 turns picking non-shacking cards nearby shaking ones. On average it seems I winning at least 1 diamond card not using magnifying glass, due to possibility of shaking card being a bomb.

Maybe it would be worth limiting active bomb cards on board. Also maybe some rarer `time freeze` card?

@animawish Well I ran the love script on Linux using love2d v11.3. I played with the classic deck. Today it does not crash every time (it happens when big bombs explode AFAICT). According to the logs it's a problem with my graphics driver (amdgpu)... If no one else reports such a problem I don't think you have to worry about it :)

Anyway, having played a bit more now, I start to get the hang of it! It's a really fun game actually. Not totally deterministic, as I sometimes have to do some guessing, but I try to strategically choose my cards! Nice thing that you implemented different game modes, it definitely makes the game more interesting. Good job!

@antbrl Ah that makes sense, unfortunately I have neither a linux machine nor an AMD card to try it on  glad to hear it doesn't happen every time at least. Thanks so much for the kind words!

Cool idea, it's nice to see a card game style video game that uses mechanics that could not work with real cards. I tried a bunch, but the highest score I could get was 41/62. The magnifying glass was a good touch, and balances well against trying to get the bombs away from the diamonds as quick as possible, with snakes thrown in as a penalty for blindly guessing. Good job!

I remember someone important said that a game is a tutorial. So, tutorials are meant to become the part of the game. An all in right from the beginning, especially when you have to grab player's attention fast. So, the thing is I didn't quite get this one without reading the tutorial, which is a test. But there's an interesting touch to your idea.

(+) the game is quite quirky

(+) there are a lot game modes

(+) easy control system

(+) meaningful but lean set of card functionality

(+) game has a tutorial

(o) there could be some background instead of simple onecolor black

A really cute game and simple concept executed well and expanded on nicely with different ways to play. It was a bit confusing to get started, but once you do you can see the strategy start to emerge with how we're planning your methods of attack. I would have liked to see some gradual build up in the form of a tutorial or something to get players started and used to mechanics, but otherwise I had fun poking around in the game. The computer-drawn art style was pretty too - it's my go to for making games as well so I can respect it a lot.

Very creative. Reminded me of minesweeper, in a funny way. Once you got a hang of how the snakes work, it came much more about respecting them and their moods, rather then blowing them to pieces. Really good.

A little more complicated than expected for LD, but it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it. As someone else mentioned, I wonder if not taking a turn for the magnify glass would make a bit more useful at the start? Still it's a neat game that makes people think. Nice job!
