Hellblocks by Thooom

[raw]
made by Thooom for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

What started as some sort of physics based Jenga tower simulator, evolved into some sort of tetris-clone, and ended up as a color-matching, tetris block stacking game. The goal of the game is to get as many points as possible without building too high, the game also ends if you drop 3 blocks into the firey pits of hell.

Utilize custom blocks with special powers, color matching and strategic planning to accumulate as many points as you can without dropping your blocks, or building too high. Watch the tutorial unfold in the main menu before you start playing.

This game comes with three different levels: * One big island * Two smaller islands * One big island but with a timed max height indicator

Controls: A/D to move left and right Spacebar to drop your block

PS: Please go to options to bring the sfx volume up, then restart the game.

Very nice concept and realisation! I had fun playing this and music is very energetic. I would like to see more of this

Great ambiance and music! I did not end up getting many explosion blocks so I mostly tried to stack colored blocks near each other till I died. Physics also feel great, though it would be nice to see where the block is going to hit the ground so you can attempt to stack more efficiently.

A cool and "unstable" take on a classic! I literally said out loud "noooooooo" when my blocks fell off the edge. Good design choices of music with the mood and feel of the game. The exploding blocks were extra fun. I would have liked a little extra visual feedback of where my block would fall (like maybe a "ghost" on it's target? or the light beam being only as thick as the actual block?) but overall satisfying to get blocks to stick and and very fun. As an added compliment, my husband walked by, saw me playing it, and asked to take a turn. :-P Great job and I hope you keep making games!

I dont know how I'm scoring, I was just piling up garbage, lmao. Theres a lot of detail for a really simple game, good job.

That was pretty fun! I liked the new take on tetris! Nice sounds (except the pause sound made my ears hurt!) and the visuals were nice.

Awesome idea and great execution! I do wish I could have a little more control over the block placement, but all in all, great work!

@fabioecco You scored from bumping same colored blocks into eachother, or by blowing up blocks with the bombs :)

Music and art are great !
My best is 2800 points ;)
The controls were cropped for me on the bottom right on simmer.io, so I it was hard to figure out how to turn the tetromino and if it was even possible.
I felt the instability in this one !

Wow, at start was thinking to do similar like this ;)
But you implemented this idea very well!
Very liked color mathing mechanics

Audio (and generally visual) is perfectly fit to the game.

As for me, I feel the lack of option to rotate pieces.

Anyways, good job!

Made me think about Tricky Towers. The physic of the objects was a bit odd, but it somehow participated to the weirdness of the game. So not a big deal. Overall a nice simple game, good work!
