Abandoned amidst the junk of a yard sale box, the lonely GameBox is feeling unwanted… and old. Ancient, even. And as he sits there, he wonders if there’s any place left for him and the games he loved to play.

Until a smug kid, and his even more unbearable mePhone come along, and make matters worse. You were already feeling pretty low, but this insult was the last straw.

You won’t be discarded. You won’t be forgotten. You’re the GameBox. A classic. A survivor!

And if you have to take on the modern world by force… so be it. You’re only a few upgrades shy of being a modern day device. And there are plenty of other devices in this yard sale to take them from...

Swearing revenge against the mePhone that wronged you… you set out into the cul-de-sac, destined for revenge, and to prove that you might be ancient…

…but you’re far from Obsolete.

-----------------------

HOW TO PLAY

Explore the cul-de-sac, challenging each of the other Devices to a battle of both strength and wits, wearing them down until you can defeat them and take their precious accessories!

Each accessory makes you both stronger and more durable, until at last you can defeat the mePhone that wronged you.

Attack: Regular damage attack
Talk: A battle of insults and persuasion, and the strongest way to defeat your enemies! (But also the trickiest!)
Ability: Use accessories you've taken from previous Devices!
Run: Run!

Can you defeat all five bosses?

This is incredible for the amount of time! My only criticism is that the 3D walking around felt a bit detached from the rest of the game and art style, but the whole thing is fun, very fitting to the theme and unique. Well done, I'm surprised this doesn't have more comments!

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! it's too funny !! the adventure of a gba XD an amazing idea ! Simple mechanics that still offered a decent amount of challenge. We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.

Web didn't start for me on Win10 Chrome.
Downloaded it and really liked it. The artwork is amazing. The overall game is pretty funny but a little short. Nice one :)

Intro is really awesome, music fits the art very good!

But I think the 3D gameplay does not fit at all with the whole game. I would have designed it with pixel art, because it's kinda strange that combats are 2d and game is 3d outside combats.

I loved the idea!

Very good game. The intro is awesome. The art is cool. The 8bits music is very good. Good work.

Wow, so cute! I love the art and the music! I would disagree with previous comments about the mix of 2d/3d - I think it worked really well! The battle system was interesting to navigate too.

My main crit is actually font design - I think some of your font choices could have been better.

But otherwise, such a great game! It was funny to see your interpretations of each well-known device!

This game is great I had a lot of fun love talking to enemies and the dialog. The graphics give the game a nice vibe.

I thought I would point out a few bugs I ran into. I did not start the game with the DS first so that might be part of the problem. I talked to the mephone and defeating the PC first. The first bug came after I defeated the PC there was duplicate speaker text in my menu. The very first enemy I engaged was the mePhone and lost, the last phone engaged was the Nokia and won. So I don't know if I was supposed to defeat the mePhone or not. It makes 6 enemies and you mentioned 5.. (Nokia, PC, Tablet, printer, DS, mePhone.)

Hey nice game! It's been said before but I definitely think you missed out by not having pixel art for the overworld. The battle and cutscene art was phenomenal, though! The first time I played I accidentally encountered the Konia right after the mePhone.

This game is absolutely hilarious! Battle art and writing made me smile a lot! Made me feel genuinely sorry for that poor lil GameBox! :C I didn't especially enjoy the 3D world, but if you keep polishing, this could be a hit! :) Thanks for making it!

Awesome small RPG, I loved the concept and the DS jokes, it's incredible you had the time to do this in only three days!

Great game! The illustrations are gorgeous, and there were some good jokes in the "talk" battles.

It seems like you can sequence break by just walking up to where Konia should be. On my first playthrough, I only fought mePhone, then Konia, and then the end cut-scene was triggered.

Like a couple other people mentioned, the 3D overworld feels a bit disconnected from the 2D fights/cutscenes, but overall a great game!

After I played this game, I dusted off my good old Game Boy. Oh man, she looked so beautiful. I went to the nearest store and bought some batteries. I opened the case gently and inserted the batteries carefully. I pick up my favorite game from the shelf. I blow on the cartridge just like back in the days. Then, I took a deep breath as I turned it on, praying for it to not malfunction. Then, that magic moment happened. That sound that takes you back to your childhood plays. A tear slides off my face and hits the screen as it proceeds to run the game.

Thanks for creating this masterpiece.

very good game, with poetic ending :p
the talk interaction (and dialog ofc) is very funny ^^

maybe need some improvements for the 3D view (far from the other graphics)

I really love this insult battles. Art and humor is great. And I like the theme of the game. However I would choose phoneDroid with emulator for something obsolete :P

Wow, I really really loved it. As a Gameboy, it spoke to me a personal level. There's a few thing that I consider unnecessary, for example, I was only interested in the option "Talk" because it was so good to fight with words ! Also great art.

Ok i think i liked everything about this game. Sound, graphics, dialogues, gameplay. Everything fits. You did a great job! Unfortunatly i had a little bug that the character auto walked after the window lost focus for a short time. But it solved itself after running against a wall for like 10 seconds :) And because they were so good i repeat: good job on the dialogues! And it's the first ludum dare game after many that i was interested in enough to finish them.

Awesome intro and menu screen. The 3D overworld with 2D fightscenes was very cool. The fighting though is very thin, you just do dialogue and then guess which one you're supposed to press. I like the idea though of just fighting other technology and amassing their parts. I somehow triggered the final boss as well

Fun game with a good message! Great art, and cutscenes! I was surprised by the ending cutscene though, because I only had one accessory. Were there other enemies for me to fight that I never saw? The only "ability" i got to use was the receiver, and I didn't notice any effect.

This was amazing. If we could still rate this would easily be 5/5. If I had to praise one aspect more than the others it is the art. I can't think of anything negative to say about it.

This is so good! The Ego life bar is so clever! and the detail: Life of the Party haha! It criticizes today's obsession with iphones and makes the gameboy look really old. Good drawings! Shame its a bit broken in the 3D parts of the game

I loved defeating ennemies with the talking. Good job on the writing. The 2D graphics was really nice. I was surprised by the fact that the game was in 3D. Nice music too. The quality is very impressive given the amount of time. I did finished the game actually!

That's really awesome ! A bit of classic RPG for the fighting, a bit of Megaman for stealing abilities; but most of all, a bit of Monkey Island for the trash talking fighting technique ! \o/

Sadly it looks like there was a lot of work on the 3D part which could be entirely removed. I don't mind chaining fights one after another without the exploration phase. Except that it is really a very good game. Congratulations !

I want to say that these graphics are awesome.

It really feels like an older playstation type game. I was also getting vibes from undertale, but this game is great.
overall I can tell that a lot of hard work went into this game.

The only thing I didn't enjoy was having to read the conversations over and over again.

Enormous amount of assets you managed to make during the jam! And nice looking too. I'm not really a fan of undertale but I did enjoy talking to these obsoletes. I basically only talked. And I think it would have been enough with just Fight, Talk and Run. Maybe even omit fighting because really why should they. It was a little confusing after I collected the last upgrade before I saw the Nokia, marker. It could have been clearer hints and maybe a really big Nokia in the center of the street instead? The world was small though so it wasn't a big problem. Cute game. Nicely done.

Nice story and really cool art style! I just think some sound effects would make things a lot more interesting.
