Scootles by Surfa

[raw]
made by Surfa for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

The workshop said your scooter has an unstable throttle and should not be used. What do those young whippersnappers know about anything?!! Back in our day we scootered 50 miles to school one-way!!! We survived the war gosh-darn it (well our parents not us).

We need to do our shopping and with our old age we are not sprinting round the shops no more. We’re taking the scooter gosh darn it and we will complete our shopping and about time too as we are out of alcohol.

Let’s try not to hit anyone though as we do not want to pay their insurance costs. Also, any damage to the store will have to be covered. So, get in there and get our shopping. And pronto!! I need to crack open a nice cold one.

Controls

Movement – W, A, S, D (Well until the throttle sticks)

Tab – Open shopping list (Menu – lets you return to main menu, shows score)

'Reverse' levels means reserved scoring so try to damage as much as possible. Therefore, if you want to smash into everything to get stars then run the 'Reverse' levels.

Really hard to play gotta be honest those were my most expensive shopping experiences ever  Overall it was a nice game to play, could've made the experience bit more funnier with better audios but in the and you all did great job congrats!

That was so much fun! The controls might have been a bit too unstable but I was laughing half the time! gg!

I liked the sounds and look of the game and it was quite fun to run into things. I would however have preferred a bit more grip on the wheels and the collision boxes of the pickups were a bit too small. Well done!

Fun idea. The people and other obstacles feel a bit heavy when you crash into them, might be nicer if you had more momentum to power through them.

It's a cool idea for a game. I feel like it might be more fun to play if either the characters had set obvious paths or if the point was to cause as much damage as possible.

Fun game! I really like the concept and the mirror effect is pretty cool.

Cool idea, but maybe if the goal was to hit and destroy everything instead of avoiding doing so - the game would be much more fun imho. Good job, i like it.

@liss1024 An unfinished feature is the reverse levels. Which changes the scoring so you earn starts through damage. It was never finalized and was added in the last 2 hours of the jam so the objective work against you (you still have to collect them though).

First time playing I damaged literally the whole shop ^^"
Second try I was a harmless scooter shopper, nobody noticed me.
Funny little game!

Quite enjoyed this game, really liked the noises the people made when you hit them. Kind of reminded me of an overexaggerated pain cry you would do to get attention. Could deffo see this being expanded upon for full release, well done.

Having driven a mobility scooter I can say this game is too realistic!

But in all seriousness, it's very satisfying to hit products and see all the numbers pop up, so the "reverse game" scenario sounds quite fun. I think the scooter could have done with a tighter turning circle and higher friction but I had lots of fun driving around checking my mirrors.

@yogurtthehorse try running this in the terminal (in the folder with the app) `chmod +x Scootles.app`

If that doesn't work try looking in: Open System Settings > Security & Privacy
It might mention that an untrusted app tried to run

@yogurtthehorse Can you try opening the terminal and changing the permission of the .app file. Using "sudo chmod 777 Scootles.app" command. If that doesn't work I will have to ask one of the other devs as I no longer have a working Mac OS PC.

@surfa @mistagiggles giving execution permission doesn't help, I guess problem is in packing game for MacOS

@yogurtthehorse it worked on the machine it was packed on (osx 10.15.6) but that's a pretty small sample size. Sorry that you couldn't play, thanks for trying though!

Perfect score babyyy. I liked the concept a lot. At first I was running people over because I thought that earned me cash but I soon realized thats not what you are supposed to do lol

The game is a lot of fun, it's hard to control the vehicle and that makes everything even funnier. running over people is very good hahah

It's funny how there's a price on these people's injuries. I like that you put in a inverse mode as well. Because to be honest, crashing into things was more fun than avoiding them :)

The idea is fun, and the game looks pretty good. I wish it was much more chaotic. But overall a okay little jam game.

Really interesting take on the theme, the graphics are nice. The rear-view camera is a very nice touch. It seemed like you still decelerated slowly when the throttle got stuck -- I don't know if that's accurate or not but I think it would be even more hectic if your speed stayed completely constant while the throttle sparked.

In the second level, somehow some boxes by the entrance fell over when I wasn't even anywhere near them and I got charged on damage. It would have been a zero damage run too :(.

Really cute idea based on the theme. The controls were tuned just well enough for it to feel chaotic but still able to maneuver well. I wish there was a level to make as much destruction as you can!

Hahah I love the intro. Took me by surprise.

Why don't these people just get out of my way?? This was so much fun. Hat's off!

I actually took it slow on my second run, and managed only $7.16 of damage :) Gotta admit, though, it's a whole lot more fun to just careen around and smash people haha.

the mirror is cool. impressed at how cheap the products are, and how expensive if hit people. lol

Both normal and reverse levels are very fun. The fact that the controls do not work in accordance with the theme is well thought out, but it creates a bit of a problem in terms of gameplay.

But no matter what, it's a game we can have fun playing. Well done!

Good job with the theme of the competition, shopping is very unstable here! The coolest thing about the game is crashing into a bunch of goods at speed. Am I the only one just enjoying the gameplay and not paying attention to the purpose of the game? :)

A solid entry in all regards! The graphics were appealingly cute and I've certainly never played a game where you are driving a mobility scooter around. I actually think that the instbaility mechanic is more of a hindrance to the overall experience than a help, as it reduces the idea that this a skill-based game, and can feel at times more frustrating than amusing. Still, it was always funny when I did accidentally just ram into someone at a million miles-per-hour. Very well done!

If only the car had more horsepower, it wouldn't have to keep getting stuck in weird places lol

Really nice game! I love that you bothered to add reflections to the side mirrors. And it's obvious that the store owner is to blame for the instability since they have polished that floor and haven't put ut any sign! xD

It's like I'm in a midwest supermarket, this is better than VR! In all seriousness, nice execution on the concept, with some nice details that elevates it above other games in the genre.

Sweet controls and I managed to make little drifts with my scooter, I would love to be able to drift more!
I feel that in the original mode all the fun things you're not supposed to do (hitting shelves and people), I played the inverse and made my personal objective to
a) get all the shopping as fast as possible
b) cause MAXIMUM DAMAGE

I love the instant ragdoll when hitting people, this is exactly how I would behave if I'd been hit with a mobility scooter.

Rear view mirrors are such a nice touch :D

One time on the Level 2 I hit the milk crates and got stuck, had to alt-f4 and restart the game, see screenshot below:
![Clipboard01.jpg](///raw/ab6/53/z/48414.jpg)

I would love to see this expanded and have the scooter move more swiftly and crazy, doing drifts and to make the objective to cause the maximum damage and do the shopping as quick as possible, I imagine a rating system like in Devil May Cry that would give me AAA ratings for sick drifts combined with collapsing as many shelves as possible

Solid entry :muscle:

Hey, it's an amazing game!

The controls are exactly what I would want them to be. And the people are doing the same thing like in real stores: you move right behind them and they suddenly decide to turn around and start walking into you :DD

There is some minor "bug" (if you can call it that) but the currency symbol wasn't present sometimes:

Thanks and good luck!

I behaved completely differently the two times I played. First time as a maniac, second time as the most polite shopper you ever met.

Very funny game. Learnt a lot about myself :)

Nice game, love the audio and background story  So many reflections!! I was enjoying scooter controls and at the same time hating it.

One thing I missed though was the ability to turn head (camera) to see if there are any people sneaking up on me, when doing a turn.
