Trouble in Monsterland by ZYXer

[raw]
made by ZYXer for LD33 (JAM)
=== PLOT ===

Mosterland is being overrun by evil non-scary humans! Worst of all, the princess of Monsterland has been kidnapped! You have to save her!

=== CONTROLS ===

- WASD / Arrow keys to move
- Mouse + Click to attack

=== HINTS ===

- Your health regenerates when you are out of combat for a few seconds. (Little red hearts will appear over your head.)

- To win the game, you must kill all business men and stand next to the princess.

- Collect green bubbles to gain XP. Levels will make you more powerful and give you extra body parts.

- The gold coins were supposed to become a currency, but I never got around to implementing it. If you want, you can treat the gold coins as "points". ;)

=== ABOUT THE GAME ===

- The game was supposed to be a Compo entry, but I ran out of time. So all graphics and code were done by me in 72 hours.

- The map is entirely procedurally generated.

- All the names are randomly generated. They may sound a bit strange.

- Sorry, I suck at making music/sounds. So the game is silent. ;)

=== POST-JAM CHANGES ===

- I made the humans late in the game a bit harder. (They are still way too easy.)

- With some friends I brainstormed some funny things for the different humans to say, but I never go around to putting them in the game during the jam. To honor my friends' hard work I added in the speech bubbles post-jam. :)
(This might have affected my humor rating, so I've opted out from humor judging.)

Like always your pixel graphics are sweet and professional, getting better in every jam :) but also as always I miss the audio part. The procedural levels are astonishing. great job!

I like the concept behind the level up, altough I sorta of wish it had some non-linearity to it.

Apart from that it's a nice little fun game. Just a question, does gold have any actual use?

Very fun! All art assets are really good, but maybe they doesn't match very well. Game play is fun and very intuitive! You should put some sound on it to make it more immersive =D

I think this is my new favorite entry. Great gameplay, the graphics are awesome, and even without the quotes it was one of the funnier games I've played. I was not expecting "+2 arms", and from that point on I pretty much didn't stop laughing.

One of the most fun entries I've played!
Loved the art style, the story, and the things human said (It's really sad that you were unable to add them during the jam :/). It's definitely missing some music and SFXs but it's not any less fun bc of it.

I definitely liked this entry! Great job!

I thoroughly enjoyed this entry! Very clever and very funny. It would have benefited from some sound and music, but I'm incredibly impressed by everything you managed to get in here in such a short time. Great job!

Looks good! Feels a little awkward when attacking, there were minor issues with collision where humans were not getting hit when I'm standing too close and attacking them. A great start to a solid game if you're wanting to take this further!

Looks really good, and was a decent challenge. Are the body parts just visual, or do they have effects? It seemed like I walked faster with more legs and had more range with more arms, but I'm not entirely sure. If this is the case, then what did the heads do?

Great one! I really enjoyed the visuals, the contrast between the characters and the environment works very well. The gameplay was fluid and smooth, but it really was a bit too easy and monotonous, one can just stand there and keep the mouse button pressed and wait for the enemies to run into their deaths. If some of the enemies were shooting at you, this would've felt much more varied. The humor is very entertaining, but the speech bubbles are sometimes hard to read because they are moving and go away fast due to their owners dying really fast. :)
Please consider practicing a bit at sounds / music, it really ain't that hard to create some basic stuff and it would've turned a very good game into an amazing one. Great job overall, nonetheless!

Cute and very playable. Biggest pluses are random map generator and monster mutation. Might be more interactive/fun if you let player chose next mutation, it seems leveling up is quite lineral and same on each replay. Humor is not superb but good enough for this game.

Very nice :) I was impressed by the graphics, how polish the game felt, and how many limbs I had in the end. It became a bit repetitive (and easy) towards the end for me, but I enjoyed it anyway, much due to the humour. Great job!
