Paper Route by OllieOA
Note - this game was made by my girlfriend and I, she did the artworks, but I am not able to show her as an author as she didn't make an LD account! Sorry if this was misleading.
THEME - UNSTABLE - PAPER ROUTE
PATCH 1.4 - Fixed the game-breaking scene transition bug I think. For those interested, I was using a scene manager to transition between scenes, but I was lazily calling reloadcurrentscene() when the player restarted the game. This caused problems in the scene manager singleton I think. Yay!
What's more unstable than rigidbody physics?
Embark on your after-school paper route with your less-than-reliable newspaper trailer. Pick up the stock from Old Man McLudum and deliver them to all his customers.
Be careful not to lose any along the way - any newspapers that touch the ground are too dirty to deliver - you wouldn't want to tarnish the McLudum brand, would you?
Featuring 3 levels of increasing difficulty to navigate; backroads, suburbs, and the construction site.
TIPS AND KNOWN BUGS
- If you happen to crash, or just want to check out the levels without beating each one, you can press the 1, 2 and 3 keys to trigger each one!

All programming, design, sound and design by me, with a lovely helping hand from my girlfriend for much of the art.
This is my second game ever. I've probably got about 6 weeks' experience in Godot and gamedev, and I think that gamejams are the best way to learn!

I was not able to play level 2. When I downloaded it an ran it from my machine, the game just closes when you finish level 1.
when I play from the browser, I get a bit further, I get a whole conversation with the player's dad (who is a bit of a dick, if I am being honest!) and then I can't pick up any papers from the old man, I get a "restart or exit" error box, but I can't hit the buttons and I am locked.
Other than that, I had a blast! I would love to play more! This is a neat addition to the "Physics Driver" genre with a Paperboy mashup!
Cheers! [-LB](https://ldjam.com/users/the-lame-brain/)
EDIT
I came back to this because I did not see the Shift+1, Shift+2, Shift+3 tip the first time.
This doesn't work on the HTML version because the browser does not read the shift button, but it works great on the downloaded version.
I also had to rate you higher in graphics because I somehow missed the parallax scrolling the first time, but that looks really awesome!
My favorite part was the jump in level 2. Watching the newspapers hover in midair while staying inside the basket felt nice.
I enjoyed the story and I liked the dynamic between the two characters. I wish I could see how it ends.
The physics are kinda wild and unwieldy but that's the appeal of this genre of games and it had me hooked because of that. I didnt use the tilting up and down options much but there's definitely a method to the madness, so I enjoyed that very much. Plus I dunno, it made me want to ride my bike, that has to count for something. right?
In terms of graphics I tend to be a pain in the ass about mixels like those, but the overall aesthetic captured to charm of things like QWOP rather well so I can't be too mad. However the graphics of the final level were bad for the gameplay. There were background elemeents that had the same contrast as playable ground so it was kinda hard to know the path without some trial and error that could've been avoided by lowering the contrast in the background.
Audio was ok, the song didn't bother me and I appreciate the voice acting but specially during the final cutscene it's too repetitive.
Overall I really liked it and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone playing games in the jam. It's a bit unfortunate that the HTML5 version seemed unstable (hehe), but with cutscene and level skipping it's not too bad an issue.
I like that there's a story and I'm really happy there was a happy ending for all 3 characters.
Thanks so much for playing it on stream! Sorry about the scene transition bug. Hopefully I can squish it soon.
Still waiting for the wheelie-only run!
I really liked the level i could play though
Sadly I get a consistent crash directly after the fade out after level 2 :(
Small note the E to talk to the oldman was hard to see so I kept blazing past him and having to restart. I think if you had it autofire when you went past him players would be less confused. Great job like I said had fun playing this one.
PS. The old man sound effect made me smile!

The music is fine as well and fitting to the atmosphere. The dad is kinda of a bummer, but the old man pays BEYOND well for delivering papers. 5 bucks per delivery! I wonder how much he charges for a paper
I played the downloadable version and had consistent crashes at the end of the levels: I crashed after the first level, replayed it, didn't crash that time; crashed after finishing the second level, replayed it, didn't crash. Every time it was a full crash to desktop.
I will need to learn a bit more about the Godot build process and debug this heavily. Thanks for letting me know @fabula-rasa about the crash to desktop on Windows. I thought the Windows version would have been a sure thing for stability! I am having real trouble replicating these bugs, though.
If I manage to find something, I will try and update the game for future players!

Make sure to refresh/reload and skip to the levels with the number keys!! :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks for checking it out!
I also liked the music and audio
It is very frustrating to have McLudum giving you so many newspapers at start, and seeing nearly half of them immediatly lost, because the carriage can not hold them all.
I did not managed to get past level 2, but I'm not good at this sort of games.
There seems to be a story with your father, that's always good to add this in a game.
Nice game, even if I'm not skilled enough for it.
# NOTE
As a line in the sand for the comments, it is at this point that I fixed the scene transition bug (I think). Turns out if you were really good at the game, you were rewarded with no bugs because needing to restart the level broke the scene transition script :stuck_out_tongue:
___
If anyone has any crashes below this line, please let me know, but I can only hope it won't be about the scene transitions!
Alright guys, lock in humour now
Thanks for all the support
+ Nice graphics
+ I really like the gameplay
+ Cute music (Did you make it?)
Bugs:
- The pause menu opens with ESC but thats the same key that is used to get out of fullscreen on the web build
- You can loose multiple papers right after getting them by already holding the key to move

Ah yes
Thanks for your feedback!

I definitely had fun beating the first two levels--the mania of trying to maintain a good amount of momentum while not losing all the papers was pretty neat. So far I have not been able to beat the third level. One thought on the third level is that it is hard to tell the foreground from the background.
At first I was annoyed that there was a timer, but I do think it actually is pretty important to force the player to go fast. The feeling of rushing without knowing if I'll be able to keep all my papers in is a pretty nice feeling. I do wonder if it would be good to let the player keep playing after they lose, though, just so they can play with the physics and learn the level layout a bit.
The bike physics were really well done and you had a really nice difficult curve in the limited levels
Rest in peace Old Man McLudum, your legacy lives on <3
