Paper Route by OllieOA

[raw]
made by OllieOA for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

Note - this game was made by my girlfriend and I, she did the artworks, but I am not able to show her as an author as she didn't make an LD account! Sorry if this was misleading.

THEME - UNSTABLE - PAPER ROUTE

PATCH 1.4 - Fixed the game-breaking scene transition bug I think. For those interested, I was using a scene manager to transition between scenes, but I was lazily calling reloadcurrentscene() when the player restarted the game. This caused problems in the scene manager singleton I think. Yay!

What's more unstable than rigidbody physics?

Embark on your after-school paper route with your less-than-reliable newspaper trailer. Pick up the stock from Old Man McLudum and deliver them to all his customers.

Be careful not to lose any along the way - any newspapers that touch the ground are too dirty to deliver - you wouldn't want to tarnish the McLudum brand, would you?

Featuring 3 levels of increasing difficulty to navigate; backroads, suburbs, and the construction site.

TIPS AND KNOWN BUGS

  • If you happen to crash, or just want to check out the levels without beating each one, you can press the 1, 2 and 3 keys to trigger each one!

I think I might have found a bit of an error.

I was not able to play level 2. When I downloaded it an ran it from my machine, the game just closes when you finish level 1.

when I play from the browser, I get a bit further, I get a whole conversation with the player's dad (who is a bit of a dick, if I am being honest!) and then I can't pick up any papers from the old man, I get a "restart or exit" error box, but I can't hit the buttons and I am locked.

Other than that, I had a blast! I would love to play more! This is a neat addition to the "Physics Driver" genre with a Paperboy mashup!

Cheers! [-LB](https://ldjam.com/users/the-lame-brain/)

EDIT
I came back to this because I did not see the Shift+1, Shift+2, Shift+3 tip the first time.
This doesn't work on the HTML version because the browser does not read the shift button, but it works great on the downloaded version.

I also had to rate you higher in graphics because I somehow missed the parallax scrolling the first time, but that looks really awesome!

it's a bit of hard to control. Never completed the whole routine. Lol But it's truly fun to play!

As you mentioned, the game got stuck at a black screen for me when transitioning (to level 3 in my case). It was a fun game while it lasted though! Pretty difficult, I found not using a/d to be easier and just slowing things down. I like the little story that goes on.

I like how consistent the art and music felt it worked together to create a really good mood for the game. I found it very challenging but that's a good thing!

This was an awesome game! I love the characters and the asset design. The game itself was a bit difficult and I got stuck at the e9nd of the route and didn't know how to progress for a bit. Given some polishing I could definitely see this as a fun mobile game. The physics are well done and it is satisfying to move around the world.

I beat levels 1 and 2 but level 3 was too hard for me.

My favorite part was the jump in level 2. Watching the newspapers hover in midair while staying inside the basket felt nice.

I enjoyed the story and I liked the dynamic between the two characters. I wish I could see how it ends.

Level 2 has some issues. There's two E buttons on the old man, he doesn't give me papers and I run out of time almost immediately and then it freezes. :(

That was actually super fun and endearing. Shout outs to Old man McLudum, may he rest in piece.
The physics are kinda wild and unwieldy but that's the appeal of this genre of games and it had me hooked because of that. I didnt use the tilting up and down options much but there's definitely a method to the madness, so I enjoyed that very much. Plus I dunno, it made me want to ride my bike, that has to count for something. right?

In terms of graphics I tend to be a pain in the ass about mixels like those, but the overall aesthetic captured to charm of things like QWOP rather well so I can't be too mad. However the graphics of the final level were bad for the gameplay. There were background elemeents that had the same contrast as playable ground so it was kinda hard to know the path without some trial and error that could've been avoided by lowering the contrast in the background.

Audio was ok, the song didn't bother me and I appreciate the voice acting but specially during the final cutscene it's too repetitive.

Overall I really liked it and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone playing games in the jam. It's a bit unfortunate that the HTML5 version seemed unstable (hehe), but with cutscene and level skipping it's not too bad an issue.

Really fun twist on a classic formula, a lot of fun jiggling through each level and the level design was great, there was a good curve of difficulty from start to finish and each level was just bullshit enough to be funny.

I like that there's a story and I'm really happy there was a happy ending for all 3 characters.

Hahahaha what a great game! Really nice atmosphere - sound-, music-, art- and storywise. I just needed the front pedal button to do all three levels, but I wouldn't say it's too easy. Enjoyed the story a lot

Overall a good game but on level 2 player will inevitably drops 2 to 3 papers because the container is too small .-. and i can't play the downloaded version because the resolution is messed up (playing on 1920x1080 resolution)

Nice visuals and sound. It has good physics to it. Unfortunately I did not come further than the first level. In the second one I could not pickup the paper. Then the restart menu came, but I could not click a button in it: ![Unbenannt.PNG](///raw/fe0/d2/z/46fcf.png)

Hey! This is really fun! I may have been way too careful though cause I kept running out of time. Gotta pick up the pace Paper Boy!
Small note the E to talk to the oldman was hard to see so I kept blazing past him and having to restart. I think if you had it autofire when you went past him players would be less confused. Great job like I said had fun playing this one.

PS. The old man sound effect made me smile!

A new chapter of the genre) I enjoyed playing this game ("+" for a story) and want more tasks and maybe different types of delivered objects, and new locations, and two... NO! Three! trailers in a row, and... Such a large field for ideas! Thank you, great job)

Quite fun to play and challenging to master! The wonky physics made me laugh. I actually managed to keep one newspaper in the basket here:

![Screenshot_4.png](///raw/732/a2/z/4728e.png)

The music is fine as well and fitting to the atmosphere. The dad is kinda of a bummer, but the old man pays BEYOND well for delivering papers. 5 bucks per delivery! I wonder how much he charges for a paper

I played the downloadable version and had consistent crashes at the end of the levels: I crashed after the first level, replayed it, didn't crash that time; crashed after finishing the second level, replayed it, didn't crash. Every time it was a full crash to desktop.

Thank you so much everyone for the lovely comments! I am really unsure about what is giving the game such a hard time on the scene transitions... and why it is so inconsistent for some of you!

I will need to learn a bit more about the Godot build process and debug this heavily. Thanks for letting me know @fabula-rasa about the crash to desktop on Windows. I thought the Windows version would have been a sure thing for stability! I am having real trouble replicating these bugs, though.

If I manage to find something, I will try and update the game for future players!

I couldn't beat the last level but still had a lot of fun! I really loved the dialogue. If you're struggling with the scene transitions you can take a look at the way I handle it, although I did use C#. [For example in this class the GotoMainMenu function changes the scene.](https://github.com/ConnorRowe/LD49-Unstable-Fragile-Payload/blob/main/scripts/InfoScreen.cs) If you're using GD script it will probably be similar.

I encountered some bugs as other people said. But it was not too much annoying.

It is very frustrating to have McLudum giving you so many newspapers at start, and seeing nearly half of them immediatly lost, because the carriage can not hold them all.

I did not managed to get past level 2, but I'm not good at this sort of games.

There seems to be a story with your father, that's always good to add this in a game.

Nice game, even if I'm not skilled enough for it.

The physics in this game are a lot of fun. There is just something exhilarating about accelerating the bike and then going down a hill with way too much momentum. The way the bike wheels spin complements this well; overall the bike is just very satisfying.

I definitely had fun beating the first two levels--the mania of trying to maintain a good amount of momentum while not losing all the papers was pretty neat. So far I have not been able to beat the third level. One thought on the third level is that it is hard to tell the foreground from the background.

At first I was annoyed that there was a timer, but I do think it actually is pretty important to force the player to go fast. The feeling of rushing without knowing if I'll be able to keep all my papers in is a pretty nice feeling. I do wonder if it would be good to let the player keep playing after they lose, though, just so they can play with the physics and learn the level layout a bit.

Great nostalgic fun! Add a bunch more levels and I'm buying it on steam xD
The bike physics were really well done and you had a really nice difficult curve in the limited levels

Rest in peace Old Man McLudum, your legacy lives on <3
