Death?Box

A small game where you have to dodge particles sent at you from unstable atoms. The game lasts for similar rounds. A round finishes when all the atoms in the level have shot enough particles to become stable.

Run instructions

The source code is available on GitHub at the link below. The game is package for Windows x64 and Linux in the same GitHub repository under the releases/ folder.

To run the game:

  • Download either archive (They both contain Windows and Linux binaries).
  • Extract the archive and go into the folder where the binaries are.
  • Run the executable from the folder.

How to play

The game is played with the mouse only.

Notes

  • This is my first ludum dare participation and I regret not doing it sooner, this was fun and a great experience.
  • The game has a weird feeling toward the end of a round since it is becoming simpler/boring as their are less shooting.
  • The game was made in 48h for the compo.

Anyway, have fun playing and any feedback is appreciated ;)

Couple of things came to my mind as I played. There should be more projectiles and they should fly in more directions so it is harder to avoid them. Right now you can do quite well just by standing still.

Also, you should explain controls before player starts the game. First time I tried this out tried WASD, arrow keys, and only then the mouse. It also took a while to realize I can just hold either mouse button down rather than click repeatedly.

Nice idea but as you mentioned it lacks the raising difficulty dodging the particle.

It's bit hard to figure out what to do, but luckily it was easy enough to figure out. I like the graphics on what I presume is Schrödinger's cat.

A cute game I believe. Agree that difficulty could have been increasing over time. I also thought the cat could have been vibrated in radiation (like with two versions of the cat exchanged), or simply disappear sometimes and reoccur somewhere else - following the Schrodinger's cat example.

I think the mechanic should be improved ... I can just stay on a spot and wait until the level is finished :/
I like the graphics though

The theme and the graphics are right on point. It plays pretty well, but I agree that it could probably use to be harder. Nice job!

Great job on your first LD entry! Some of sprites looked really nice and it was a cool concept, it would be great to see some more gameplay added.

Thank you all!

@Weirdybeardyman yep I'd like to add/tweak a few more things as well as fix some issues when I'll have a bit more time.

Is cat dead or not?

Interesting main character sprite and congrats on finishing your first jam entry! Sounds like you're already aware of the main issue: it would be fun to figure out a way so that the difficulty increases as you go on instead of decreasing. Still an interesting concept, though.

Congrats on your first Ludum Dare! And you have a finished game as well, which is also super cool.

Unfortunately, I do have to agree with you -- the game is quite boring. And the worst part about this is that it didn't have to be. I think a couple of small tweaks could make the difficulty curve point in the right direction. So, here's a couple of fixes you could try

- Make the shooting delay and particle speed dependent on the amount of atoms left. The less atoms there are, the faster the remaining ones should be shootings. This should make the ending harder than the beginning and have a different pace to it. You would have less emitters, but they will be shooting faster and the particles themselves would be more dangerous

- Make it one continuous session and not multiple waves. You correctly identified the problem with the ending of the wave, so, why not sidestep it and just spawn new atoms as you go?

- Make atoms move around. I dunno, I cannot really argue that one from some sort of objective point of view and I have no idea if this will actually make the game any better, but looking at your code, I can't see a reason why it would be hard to implement, so worth a shot

Oh, and it does look and sound kinda nice. It's pleasant enough for what it is

Anyway, good luck in your next Ludum Dares!

This is a great first run at LD Jam and I hope you keep coming back to future ones. The game has a good foundation but I think with more time and some more variety it could have been greatly improved. Much of it is a waiting game with a little movement. This plays far better than my first game and I can't wait to see what you come up with in future events!

Nice Game. Would love to have some scoring to keep me playing a little more, and the random spawn at the start can be a little tricky.

Beat it! It's not too difficult, but it gave me time to realize the atoms would decay after a while. I like the theming, you are dodging literal particles from atoms and you are Schrödinger's cat, haha. nice job, keep up the good work!
