Mr Plutonium by KekkoDude

[raw]
made by KekkoDude for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

What’s this? A post LD patch?

Well yes you are correct! it is indeed and it brings something that i felt was lacking. Nothing game-changing, everything is still the same old same old, Mr. Plutonium is till running, crashing and dying as usual, but NOW! There’s a LEADERBOARD Yeah! Compete with your fellow Plutonium addicts to see who can rack up the most meterds and try to hit the TOP 10 list in the new and improved Mr. Plutonium!

Important note regarding Leaderboard submissions

Do not enter a name containing special characters like spaces and or !#"¤"#¤&~~~*+?? etc. Keep it purely Alphabetical and numerical or you submission will NOT be registered.

tiny patch note

I did tweak the difficulty cure a tiny bit as it was ramping way to slowly and it could take 10-30 minutes for the difficulty to increase. This was basicly a simple formula fix, The old way went like this

  • I set a milestone in the beginning and when you passed 1k meterds the difficulty would increase
  • Then a new milestone would be set with this formula:

newMilestone = currentMilestone + currentMilestone

  • To make the game a bit faster i changed this to:

newMilestone = currentMilestone + 1000

  • Making every 1000 meterds a new milestone

Lore & Whatnot

Oh no! Mr. Plutonium broke out of his containment pod and is trying to escape! Who scattered all this plutonium around for him? How far will he get? What is even going on?!

In this game you take control over Mr. Plutonium on his grand adventure to freedom or rather his inevitable death, It's a endless 2d platform side-scroller. He's is one hell of a unstable guy, he never seems to be able to decide how to move, except for forwards! Mr. plutonium is reliant on his plutonium to keep going. In his pod he was given a bare minimum supply to keep him alive, but over time he grew strong enough to break out! He's lust for more is what drives him. But keep in mind! He's a fragile being, should he crash into any obstacles he will loose some, and in the worst case scenario he would die if he had none

Side note! In plutoniums world distanse is measured in meterds which is a measurement of both distanse and time (mostly time) and this unit is used by highly skilles athletes running marathons to determine their overall performance.

Tips / Tricks / Controls

  • In the top left of your screen the current controls are displayed, every time one is used it will change to something new
  • you can use multiple keys at once
  • when in doubt move left, keep this one and the jump key in mid at all times and you might get far
  • there's a hard edge(invisible wall) to the left and the right, use this to your advantage
My Personal Hi-Score in the finished version!

Techy Stuff

As usual I'm using Gamemaker Studio (the old one) as my engine, This is where most of my work happens. Outside of Gamemaker i have been using Piskel and Paint.Net as my graphical tools. For sound this time around I didn't have access to any instruments or any proper recording equipment, so all this work had to be done on the PC. It was a bummer(I really really enjoy making sounds and music for my games), but hey, I got something tossed together! The tools i used for audio was Bfxr for my effect sounds, for the soundtrack I used Onlinesequencer, never touched it before but it was really easy to get going! I also had to do a tiny bit of editing in Audacity to get the soundtrack looping "properly".

Credits to Nessa for making the gorgeous thumbnail for this game, the one displayed on LD

It is really innovative! but it was also really hard to play

Games.. again teaching me typing better than school ever did :P. For the most part, the jump button is all you need to worry about. This game probably needs some progressive difficulty to make it harder as you go as it's pretty hard to lose after a while with some built up plutonium. Looks nice and green! Music gets repetative though.

Very good concept x)
To be honest, I never used the horizontal moves during my playtesting, only the jump. I think it's a bit difficult to manage the changes for jumping and horizontal actions.

:) Cool idea! I like it!

I had a moment of panicked confusion by not knowing how to control it at first! But it felt very obvious, once I actually thought about what the keys were showing.

Thanks!
With practice comes mastery!

@silkworm-sweatshop
Haha glad this could provide some "typing practice" wasn't intentional, but i saw my familiarity with my keyboard increase a bit after running for a while :laughing:
The "Jump key" Is the most critical key to keep notice of indeed, but if you manage to use all keys you could go really far, also it's really hard to hop the obstacles with only the "Jump key", got to do it more or less pixel prefect if you are going for a "1 key run"

@maluskhan
Challenge yourself! I got faith in your ability to run some hefty Meterds :wink:

@ukulelefury
Glad you liked it, haha yeah, had some weird keyboard slaps myself during testing when i panicked and "guessed" the position of a key, like, "V to jump" ALLRIGHT! "ncg !v! hfn" Got it! :sunglasses:

Made it to 6005, felt it would have been alot easier if i had better typing skills :/ Interesting concept, like the style, simple gameplay but balanced fairly well to be sort of compelling. Felt there was quite a few times where I had 2 obstacles on different levels at the same time and it was basically impossible not to hit something, but maybe i'm just too slow. Like the fun art style and the humour.

Lol Is this a typing game? I love the gameplay, especially when I'm stuck in the zone that I don't know how to deal with the 4-direction input. I have a very UNSTABLE experience, hence good job!

The game looks great and sounds really good. The idea is simple, interesting and fun. I am extremely bad at it, but I still had fun trying it. Well done.

Ay! congratulations you currently have the 2'nd highest score i know of! "Pro-tip" When you are faced with the double stacked obstacles and basically have to do a double jump, **AND I SAY THIS TO EVERYONE EVERYONE!**
You can move to the left and basically negate the speed of the incoming obstacles and give yourself some thinking time, but only so much, when you hit the hard edge of the map there's no more moving left, same goes for the right side.

It's also possible to use multiple keys at the same time :wink:

@foursay

Haha both yes and no, i didn't make it as a typing game, personally i consider it a endless scroller with unstable controls. Should i update it to make you type words for the different actions when you get further out in the run you think haha? type jump related words to jump but never the same word twice for example?

@jk5000 @becky-rayner @dob
Appreciate the feedback everyone! Makes my day every day haha

Keep at it and you will know where every key on your keyboard is by heart eventually haha

OMG!!!My team talk about this random gameplay too,we discussed a top-down racing game with random input,but we chose something that more visualized.

This level up the "unstable" from the "game rule" side to the "control" side(unstable connect between game and player).I like this.

Followed you and waiting for your new games~

It's cool but as other already mentioned only the jump is really useful. I tried to get fancy by using horizontal movement, but it doesn't seem to change a lot of things. Progressive difficulty should also make the experience more interesting on long runs.

Other than that, the graphics are solid. The parallaxe is a great touch (maybe the trees move too much, but that's okay). Great point on the sounds. Maybe the music could have been a bit more complex, but that's okay as it is for a game jam I think.

Great job!

The idea of unstable controls is one of more interesting takes on theme I've seen so far.

I added your score to the new Leaderboard patch

@cloistered

Glad you liked it! and thanks for the follow, i have been trying real hard to participate in every LD since LD 45 and I'm planning on keeping at it. I will keep an eye out on your progress if you stick around :slight_smile:

@shubart

You are most welcome, my pleasure providing :wink:

@mathiouza

I have taken the difficulty curve into consideration in the new patch if you want some more action and a go for the TOP 10 list :wink:

I got to find someone to watch as they play, I'm getting really curious on how peoples playstyles are, i find myself using all the keys most of the time and i cant fathom how people are playing just using the jump key haha, when i try i loose almost instantly. Anyways Thanks for the feedback it's much appreciated!

@shigor

Happy you found it interesting, The game took a complete 360 while being made, i dont quite remember the original concept, but luckily i had just made the character sprite and the furthest background, tossed it into the engine and stared at the wall for a bit longer than id like to admit when i changed my mind of what i wanted it to be, pretty pleased with the end result.

@lesinvisible

Glad you liked it, Exited to give your game a go judging by the thumbnail haha, it really caught my eye!

Windows security reports the game as a trojan and deletes it (link to the Microsoft page: [Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/threats/malware-encyclopedia-description?name=Trojan%3aWin32%2fWacatac.B!ml&threatid=2147735505) (the build including the leaderboard). The build without leaderboard is blocked by smart screen as potentially harmful but at least not deleted by the anti-virus.

strange... i saw someone download and play it on a stream yesterday without any issued, no idea what could cause this :thinking:
Going to try to re-upload, got the same issue myself now..

@heremeus

Ok i have no clue what was going on... After i downloaded it from itch it got recognized as a threat, it deleted both the downloaded one and the .exe i already had in my dev folder.. I made a new .exe without doing anything and it immediately got recognized and deleted, I'm clueless as to why..

Made a miniature tweak to a variable in the object displaying the score since i was doing some stuff to manipulate the scores so i changed a variable from 1337 to 0 and it may be working, it is for me at least... this is beyond me, but would you check it again? :heart:

I like the idea, and the music is decent.

Unsure what the "drop" key is for. Was confused by what "plutoniums left" means, eventually realized it was health.

@holyblackcat

drop key is for dropping. for example, if you are on a platform and they keep going, but there's a block coming, you Could drop down instead of jumping over them, it would probably be the best solution if a double-stack of boxes are coming your way

So hard sometimes when rock spawn and block spawn just on top
But pretty great idea on the controls, great game for learning your keyboard layout :p

Interesting idea. Only issue for me is when rock and box spawn together. Overall I liked it good job!

An interesting set of mechanics. I would have liked if the next key to use for jumping was displayed immediately upon jump, instead of waiting to land, so that double jumps would be more doable.

Very cool gameplay, it keeps the player alert constantly.

I barely managed to make 800ish points :/ not enough to be in the leaderboard. The things that gets me most of the time is jumping over rocks: I land just after the rock, and the I guess hitbox of the character collide with the hitbox of the rock and makes me loose. Testing for a pixel perfect collision may reduce the frustration felt by the player at that time.

I had a lot of fun, thanks for this game :heart:
