Day Broken by UglySwedishFish

Day Broken is a short atmospheric horror game based on S. D. Locke's Proposal, which tells a story about a world in which humanities most stable source of wellness; the sun, turns against them.
You play as one of the lucky few who survived the initial chaos, as you were currently working the day shift as a subway technician. You are blissfully unaware of this horrifying truth of what is happening, until you decide to boot up the computer.
Short summary of the source material:
In S. D. Locke's Proposal known most commonly as "When Day Breaks" (also big inspiration for the title of this game), the sun undergoes some unknown event in which the light it emits in the visible spectrum all of the sudden has a kind of melting effect on anything organic. The organic creature (not exclusive to humans) then transforms into a kind of wax-like creature. Coming into contact with any such wax-like creature is also, most likely, lethal. If such a story intrigues you, I highly suggest you check out the original article.
About game itself
The goal of the game is simply to exit the subway station whilst not being killed by any of the entities and avoiding all direct sunlight.
The game uses a custom game engine written in c++, and uses state of the art lighting methods (ray traced reflections, global illumination and shadows). Note: it does not require a rtx gpu to run.

Please note: the provided binary is windows only, unfortunately if you are using another OS, you will not be able to run this game. (for linux users: it may run in wine, but this has not been adequately tested) :slight_frown:
For those of you using windows however, installing and running this game should be fairly straightforward. Simply download the provided .rar file, extract it (make sure everything included in the rar is extracted to the same folder!) and run the provided .exe. The game will prompt you if you wish to use any custom resolution, however if you simply want to run on your monitors native resolution in fullscreen, you can simply enter: "n y" into the console and hit enter.

The resulting in-game final render, with all the post processing applied.

Not all of the models were made by me (albeit most were). Links to the respective models can be found here
Many of the sound effects used free sounds as a base, and were heavily mixed (instead of being created from the ground up). Links to all the original sound effects can be found here. As only the minority of sound effects were created entirely from the ground up, I have choose to opt-out of the audio category. Do note that all of the sound effects were heavily mixed and edited by me, some may not even be recognizable from their originals.
Some of the textures were found via 3DAssets.one a fantastic site (not sponsored, just a big fan!)
I borrowed the voice talents of "Electrode" and "Simon", massive thanks to them for both the voicework and also the short notice!
Note: due to feedback, there is now a transcript of the voice recordings.
Changelog:
05/10/2021 - Fixed mouse cursor being always visible, and made death/ending text a tad faster.

You did a really good job of creating the mood as well. The color palette felt very 'sheltering-from-overly-bright-sun' for me, even in the dark corners, which was impressive.
Sound design also really good. The echo is very nice and moody. I will say that the narration is *almost* too distorted for how critical it is. It usually took me a couple times to understand each clip, which translated into death more than once.
Personally, I think the monsters are a little unreadable. The ones that are in the 'go-very-fast-when-not-watched' ended up being trial and error for me, since I got killed by ones that appeared where I wasn't looking while I was trying to keep others under observation. The near-instantaneous speed and the fact that it happened when I was looking away meant that it felt like a random event rather than a kill by a monster.
You're not supposed to be able to ride the train, right?
As for the train, there is a lever on one of the sides. No spoilers, but try pulling it!
This game is incredible, the only thing is that i don't know how well it fits the "unstable" theme.
At least it's not really apparent. But still it's really a good game!
Ambiance is incredible, graphics are insane !
Maybe add a retry option to restart without listening again to computer.
My only complaint is that it would be nice to skip the intro voice lines on the second playthrough after a restart
Other than that you made very nice foundation for maybe future full fleged horror game.
Clamping the camera rotation should be a really quick and easy fix, so I'll make sure to get on fixing this and bundle it in the same release that adds the skipping of the intro voice lines.
None of this is meant as criticism; I just can't deal with certain kinds of horror and this is one of those kinds ^_^;
As for feedback, I mostly have what other people have already said. It was a bit annoying having to wait through the entire computer introductory screne at the beginning everytime you died. I also never got further than the time when someone starts crying, because I die and I have no idea why. Apparently there were enemies that moved very fast, but I never saw them and this felt a bit unfair. Maybe it is the bug you mentioned before?
However, the sound design and after effects worked really well to create a super scary atmosphere. Amazing game! :D
I'd be interested to see what else could be done with the lighting engine you mention—I feel like the little snippet of game I saw probably doesn't do it justice.
Ambitious entry!
I finally had the time to come back and rate everything I played so far!
