An Unstable World by NoI3ody

made by NoI3ody for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

An Unstable World is a darwinian simulator.

You will find yourself in a tiny world filled with even tinier creatures. Each of these creatures has a set of traits it inherits from its species. The species by themselfs are constantly evolving and therefore new born creatures will have a slightly modified set of traits. The specie's traits are modified by the game and also by the player.

The Creatures

We have two types of creatures. One is eating plants or berries while another one is eating other creatures.

What can I do?

While the game itself manipulates the specie's DNA you as a player will have to pick DNA modifications regularly. You will be prompted with a list of modifications and can drag them onto any species you would like to modify.

The Goal

There is no actual goal, but just to keep a good balance between the races and prevent them from getting extinct.

Controls

  • Camera is moved via WASD.
  • Camera is rotated by moving the mouse while pressing the right mouse button.
  • DNA Cards are selected and dragged via left mouse click.

UPDATES

  • Spawn but for creatures fixed
  • Creatures should not stack anymore at one point
  • UI scale fixed

My poor Peasoup Green people just wanted to stay in a row, strength in numbers? The minimalist style gives it a cool look. This is something I could just leave on my screen like a virtual pet. :footprints:

Pretty relaxing just watching them go about. love the idea, but it didn't feel like the dna cards had a huge impact, or at least I couldn't figure it out. Good job though, really good graphics and I like the sound effects.

I totally agree with @joonamo, it would be neat to have a toggle to stop the dna cards from appearing if you want to just let the simulation play out! Only thing that I think could be tutorialized a bit better is what each of the values do, but fun to play around with it.

The audio was the best part of this game, it made it sound nice and outdoors-y. The graphics were quite nice, sticking to the same simplified style throughout, but the ground was a bit bland, try adding more dimension to it. Unfortunately, the gameplay was a bit hard to understand; though the concept was clear, how to make use of it to do well in the game was not. It would be a good idea to make it so the player can see immediate clear results of their actions or to clearly know what each of their actions will do. The idea for the game was a good one, and fit the theme better than my game. Anyway, nice job making your game and good luck in judging!

I liked the art style. Neat low-poly trees :) I was a bit confused as to what effects my actions had. I.e. I couldn't really see what changing any of the stats had on the people. Eventually (after like 3 minutes) everybody clustered together and didn't move anymore.

I don't understand how cards affects and at least I had bug with stacking those guys near each other. But it has nice looking and pretty good idea behind. Also like round world and camera.

My guys decided to stand still all together. Probably some kind of pathfinding bug. The newcomers (units spawning after the game has started) what I would assume is some sort of reprodution was also bugged, because they instantly died after spawning.

I love "idle sims" like this but I understand jams are HARD stuff. Nice work after all!

Thanks for the feedback so far, we just published a minor bugfix to address the creatures getting stuck on spawn.

Really nice, chill game. I love the visuals! The UI is very clean and the low poly models work well. I liked being able to use the mouse for camera rotation, but it made me want to control panning with the mouse too.

Cute and chill, though my three races (one died out quickly) didn't seem to have much to do apart from slowly going extinct.

Cool game! The idea is very creative, and the game seems like it must have been very complicated to code so I am impressed. I love the art, music, and general vibe of the game. I would recommend increasing what the values do by a lot, because I had trouble noticing the differences. Also I would not let the player evolve extinct species. Overall very creative and chill game, Great job!

Really nice visuals and polish! I think a tutorial would've really helped to understand the game better.
Nice work! :)
