Careful Deer by Beth

[raw]
made by Beth for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

Carefully now, deer. You are just a baby fawn learning how to use those wibbly-wobbly legs of yours. See if you can find some berries as you learn to walk in the forest. We're all very proud of you.

Use the keyboard to control each part of your long legs in a QWOP style, chaotic stumble around the forest in search of berries. Can you find them all?

This game was made in 3 days for Ludum Dare 49 in Unity. All assets and code were made in this time, except for music which is from the wonderful Incompetech. Full attribution below.

I like your style: "What if QWOP was harder?" :joy: Good job making a deer simulation, I would love to see a video of an experienced player's run.

wtf.. at least I got a score of two! :) although I'm not sure if its still a deer or rather a 4-legged spider I'm trying to control

Perfect for QOOPerative gameplay :D. I wouldn't mind if the game was longer so the deer could eat more berries :).

Loved the sound track and theme of the game. Mostly ended up just swinging the limp legs around, but occasionally managed to yeet the deer in the right direction, which was extremely satisfying. Seeing the keys on-screen was a nice touch and helped figure out which buttons did what (not that that helped much in the end haha!). Great work :)

This was difficult and fun :D I like the ideas of reinventing the controls. Thank you!

I love the idea, but I think controlling all 16 points of articulation is just a bit too complicated to get my head around. I also agree that showing the controls on-screen is a very nice touch

And I thought QWOP was hard :joy: Lovely graphics and great choice of music!

So fun! I can't stop laughing xD. Very good game. At first I didn't know what to do, but later I figured out the best way to move forward. Just press I-U-I-U-I-U repeatedly. This way the deer moves forward by making very weird jumps.

Very interesting idea. Where have you ever seen using 16 buttons just for movement? It's ridiculous in a good way

Well, that was delicious take on QWOP :)

Controls were satisfying to figure out. I just tried to get both front legs extended in front of me, and then launched myself forward by pressing O and K at the same time.

The hell is that ???

It's humm, oh to say huuummm, interesting ? I think it's lack of actual gameplay but at least it funny ? I don't know man, it's so weird but so fascinating at the same time. Good job I guess ?

Did I win???

Really really funny game with a cute facade that makes it even funnier. I unironically like the photo collage style. 16 joints is definitely absurd but I found a technique that got me to the end (repeatedly pressing QWERUIOP like a piano roll. Creative and fun!

I prance so far I fell into the void. I count this as a win! I found out I could use my powerful front legs and launch myself forward across the terrain, if my other damn limbs didn't keep getting in the way. This game idea was just crazy enough to work.

The inspiration from QWOP is really strong here, and that makes this game super fun! I was a great time trying to figure out how to better force myself to flail along the floor more effectively. Nice job!
