Jumpy Train! by Szkocka

[raw]
made by Szkocka for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

Hi!

I present to you game about train trying to not fall apart before reaching the destination!

JumpyTrain.png

Gameplay info: instrukcje.png This ludum dare was the most turbulent one that I ever experienced. I scrapped 6 projects and even more ideas that existed only on paper. You know, asking myself a question, what is unstable - I was writing down stuff like stocks, crypto, nft... Every single idea was feeling it is going to be not that original.

At the second day at about 26 hours in I started this project and run with it till the end. It is not 1:1 of what i intended for it, but I am proud that I did it either way.

When it comes to sleep about 8-10 hours of sleep a night, was a lot more efficient than any amount of energy drinks!

In case of any questions please feel free to ask!

So I gave the game a go - I don't exactly know what I did but my train took off and flew off the top of the screen >.> I left it running as it seemed to work quite well up there and I like how the terrain changes as you go! Cool idea!

@darthboseiju Thanks for feedback, I realized I only checked the game on one PC. Changed to laptop without dedicated GPU and saw with my own eyes. Patching time :D

The train sometimes reacts too slowly, you can't collect everything at all.
I like the changing backgrounds. But a little background music would have done it good.

Cool game, I like that lighting. However, sometimes it's difficult to measure when to jump

The game seems ok, but I think it can be improved by lighting up the scene just a bit more.

@chillertyp May I ask, if you experience jittery movement/flying of the train up for infinite amount of time? If so please tell me if you are playing on computer with dedicated graphics card ;D

On the first run I ran out of oil. The second time I had definitely more fun playing that. I would try to make the obstacles and collectibles a bit more visually readable and please loose the train foley or whatever that is ;) It could be a nice chillout game with some relaxing music

Haha nice little game! A little hard to see the obstacles, but apart from that, interesting gameplay idea, and well executed! Kudos :)

Little hard to see what's happening since it's so dark, but a nice infinite runner nevertheless. Who knew a train was the perfect vehicle for an on-rails action game?

Nice idea with the various resources and obstacles, risk and reward. Some funky train music could improve it further.

Very fun and well made game. At first I thought it is an endless runner but managed to reach the end :D

@xcvzxc Yup, endless runner was the first idea, but after couple of tests I found out that gameplay wasn`t fun and due to how a game was supposed to progress at first, there was a point in which losing a game was unavoidable and the game turned into rythmic space clicker. Thanks for the feedback : D

I used to play Subway Surfer a lot few years back, so playing this was very enjoyable to me, although I do have some points on what could improve. It was quite hard to see those barricades, so making them bigger or more visible would be nice also having some graphical indication about how much HP/OIL I have (like having cog wheels in the back of the loco) would be nice, because I looking to the side and then even trying to read (not just having a bar) is quite difficult and when I tried this I've hit like 2 barricades. But overall very nice entry, good job!

The graphical style is pretty nice and I like the sounds effects too! My only problem was that the barricades were kinda hard to see at first. Overall good work on the game!

*Good*:

-> Liked the low poly graphics style, it reminds those on Imphenzia's lessons on Blender. Nice touch the environment change, later in game.

-> Gameplay is basic but fun and consistent on what it proposes.

*Minor issues*:

-> Platform movement looks stuck something like 0.5 sec after returning from a jump.

-> Maybe it's too dark? Ok, a train inside a tunnel but sometimes is hard to distinguish the necessary bonus.

Overall a nice game, good that you managed to deliver one after 6 tries.

Couldn't make it to the finish line, I had quite a hard time jumping at the right moment, but I really liked the design (I also find it fitting that it's dark and you cannot see too well) and I think the speed increased at a reasonable rate! Good job overall! :)
