Crazy Potion by zapdos2

Play my game here!

My second Ludum Dare submission.

This time I used Game Maker Studio 2, which was much more intuitive than Unity, and therefore allowed me to make a more complete game than last time. Still missing a lot of things obviously (like sound... D:), but I'm still quite happy with the result.

Used tools/assets:

  • Game Maker Studio 2
  • Graphics from “Kenney Game Assets 1”, with some additions for the boss
  • https://opengameart.org/content/potion-0 for the potion in the start menu
  • Made the bull icon myself, because I couldn't find a good public domain one :P

How to play:

Every few seconds the random ability at the bottom of the screen gets automatically(!) cast. Walk with WASD, and aim abilities with your mouse.

Abilities: - Fireball: Shoots a fireball - Firebreath: Breathes out fire, hitting multiple enemies - Bull: Charge towards the mouse, player is immune while red. On collision with enemy, stuns and damages them. On collision with a wall, stuns player. - Cross: Heals everyone (even enemies!) in a small radius around the mouse cursor.

I really like the concept of random powers, keeps you on your toes. And all of them having various ranges brings some tactics into play. Pretty fun little game!

I like the concept, and it works the way it is supposed to, but the randomness of the spells just gets too chaotic. I think if you had some sort of control over it, say pick two spells but you can't control which is working, or something like that, it might be better.

Hard! The concept is good. My strategy was to ball up all the chasers and focus on the fireball throwers. Also I really loved the firepunch(?) spell. Felt great to use. One piece of feedback is that it would be nice to not have to restart the whole game on death.

Very intuitive and simple game. I like that the abilities do feel distinct and have strategies to them.

This got a bit hard at level 3, did not manage to get past that after a couple tries, cool simple game though!

The mechanics are simple but really fun. UI is very clear and intuitive as well. Well done!
(One thing I'd want is to know the directions of the fireballs before it got activated, or control them)

Wow, I loved that, really simple mechanics and fits the theme so well. I would play more levels, keep working on it!

Really nice idea with random spell casting ! ;D Level 3 and 4 are insanely hard x). I would love to manipulate the randomness and the spell rate. Nice one Gg !

The mechanism of random abilities is quite interesting.
However, compared to the number of monsters, player abilities are triggered too slowly. It feels like a faster pace of the game might lead to a better experience in this game.
Overall, a nice game~ Nice job

I agree with @cloudlunar that the game would benefit from having faster paced gameplay, but nevertheless I had fun playing it. Also maybe the healing hability could heal the player as well? I could've used the extra health for level 4 xD
Good work!

@haise Thanks for the comment! The healing ability DOES in fact heal the player as well, it's just a little hard to aim when moving around.
I wanted to add a little aiming area to show where exactly abilities will hit, which would have helped a lot I think, but I ran out of time unfortunately. ;(

Died at level 2, evidently I'm not good at this, but I had great fun!

I think I've seen this idea done before by some of the winners of a different game jam (GMTK maybe?), but it's very well executed here! Difficult, but in a fun way that makes you want to try again.

That boss fight was harder than expected :) Neat mechanic, fits the the theme well.

Fun concept. The problem with healing is I forgot how to use it during game, since it doesn't have feedback of the area that is going to heal. The space to skip levels, help to not have to retry the first levels, but a retry button would have been better.

For a second jam, it's a nice game. I agree with previous comments on the slow path of the game.

Thought the main game mechanic was interesting and unique. I think the quality of the game is great especially knowing it was made it such a short time! The levels are cool and I like the different enemies you included. I do think that the player should have some other way of interacting rather than just waiting for abilities to automatically be cast, maybe you can fight with a sword while you wait for your abilities to recharge. I felt like I was waiting a lot. Overall, very good job!

Congrats on completing your game. It is a neat idea, if you were to continue this I think it would benefit from reducing the timer and adding some additional element of strategy and adding more interesting AI for the melee guy. Its fun

Congrats on the second submission! The idea of random unstable abilities activating is cool, and the gameplay is fun.

Yay I won! I feel that the random timers between moves made it hard to strategize much, and waiting 5 seconds for an attack was a bit long. Other than that I had a good time! Well done!
