Through the Dungeon Scrolls!

Team up with our green robed adventurer and help guide them through the dubious, trap riddled, dungeon, designed by the evil red robed entity who seeks to defeat You! Use the fantastical tools provided to You from the Deck Of Discord! But do be careful! Using these cards may come at a price~! Overuse might lead to them becoming... UNSTABLE!~

Hello! It's me João(Bear) this time to talk to you about our Ludum Dare 49 "Unstable" themed submission!

Objectives / How to play

Objective:

Your objective is to guide our green robed friend, using the controls explained below, and traverse as many tiles as you can from the bottom row tiles to the very top ones!

How to play:

Lead our little adventurer one tile at a time avoiding as many traps as possible. Your score, in the end, will go up the more tiles you walk through before you reach the top row of tiles!

When you stumble into a hazardous tile, you will be faced with three(3) options: You, either, tread through the trap as suffer its consequenses # OR # use the fantastical tool cards, randomly assorted, at Your disposal, to circumvent these, pesky, dungeon hoodwinks! Beware tho... Only certain cards can be used into certain traps.

Don't have the right card for the situation? Dreading the damage our little wizard hatted companion will take? well there's a THIRD OPTION!: * THE CARD MONTE! * At the cost of points, at the end of your run, you can test your luck and score yourself the perfect card for the occasion, allowing you to continue on your journey! But take too long tho, each run is time, presented to you at the end!

The game is really easy! So play for a high score or to have a fast time!

Controls:

You can play Deck O' Discord using Keyboard + Mouse or JUST with you mouse!

Mobile :

Deck O' Discord is also available to be played on mobile! Aside from not being able to zoom onto the card and some resolution issues, You can experience the game on the go!

Dev comments

This will be our 3rd Ludum Dare in a row! Only a team of two this time!

In perfect "US" fashion, our scope for this game jam submission was too wide just to be made in only three days! Meaning the game lacks a few key features we had initially planned to add to tie our submission more into the theme of "Unstable"...

For instance, we wanted the cards, to have an increasing chance of failing, the more you used the same kind of card, as the run went on. We also wanted to implement a sort of metal detector card...a scry/clairvoyance effect that would reveal, in a radius, the tiles around you, letting you know which tiles were safe, and the one who're traps... Allowing you to plan out you next moves in order to amass as many points without worrying about sneaky traps!

* Diogo (cake) and * I *(Bear) found ourselves forced into prioritizing adding the gameplay loop and clean up any issues that would remove the player from the core experience of *Deck O' Discord. (a reoccurring theme, it seems). That didn't stop us from doing as much as we could and squeeze in as much content as we could, in such a ammount of time!

Thank you for giving our game a try, please rate if you can and share with us the score/time you got, in the comments! Have a good one~ ~ * João * (Bear)

Really nice ambience and the card selection mechanic is nicely done! Some really promising concepts but the sound design is a definite highlight. Love the card monte!

This was really fun! My main issue is that I couldn't manage to make the window any bigger, so everything was on the small side. But I had a good time playing (just leaning forward a bit), and I adored "Card Monte." (I really had to keep an eye on that shield!) Lovely work, everyone!

First off, I love the dithering work you guys did here. It's not a style I've ever used myself, so i imagine it's very easy to get it wrong. Props to you.

Unfortunately this one didn't grab me at first. There's not much of a threat of failure here, and being docked points for using card monte too many times wasn't very obvious or meaningful to me. Honestly the card monte is probably the most engaging part of the game.

Once I read the invitation to share times though, that was the kick I needed to have much more fun with the game.![45sec.png](///raw/946/24/z/46bbf.png), ![hardmode speed.png](///raw/946/24/z/46bc0.png) Here are my best times after a few playthroughs of each difficulty.

@crotonyl-alcohol Thank you for giving Deck O' Discord a try! I believe our little submission can become exponentially more fun once we flesh out more of the key features!

@mistercheezymoon Thank you for the kind words and the feedback! Really appreciated! Im glad we could entice you to challange our little submission. Due to time constraints we saw ourselves scrambling for assets and content and were not able to invest into an in game "How to". These are great time scores you show us that could even rival The programmer(Cake) who, replayed the game time and time again, through till the end of the game jam. Please look forward to a mor fleshed out version of Deck O' Discord!

Great atmosphere! Maybe a visual indicator to show where the player can move would be better to understand the movement phase directly

Wasn't really sure what was happening but still managed to win, perhaps it's too easy. Also, some of the text was too small to read. Anyway, I really enjoyed the pixel art, especially the user interface stuff.

I really enjoyed this game being more strategy based than most of the other jam games and would have loved to see the extra content in there although I can totally empathise since we've had to cut content in every jam! It wasn't immediately obvious to me that you had to reach the other side so I'm not sure if I missed something but some kind of indicator would have been good! I also couldn't see any advantage to not going straight across but I guess the "metal detector" card would have added that extra strategy in choosing where to go.

I love the idea of going for points or a quick time since that definitely increases the replayability of the game! It would have been nice to see a point counter and/or timer so you know where you're at when trying to beat your own high score. The addition of hard mode was great as well adding to that replayability without having to increase your jam workload too much by adding a bunch of new features.

The graphics were really nice and fit the vibe of the game really well. The added touch of the animation on the card made the game so much more polished without even being something I noticed at first so love that! I liked the different sounds effects as well which made the game more responsive and engaging. Again, the little touch of even the start menu sound effects. I did find the music a little repetitive although it was nice and soft so didn't get annoying.

Overall, really great job making such a polished game as a pair!

That's a great game.

You may have lacked time to implement some mecanisms (especially about unstability, because here there's not this aspect much), but looks like a legit game you would download on a appstore.

The graphics are so cool and polished, with small animations. Well, since I am of those who don't really read instructions, I was a little bit lost but thankfully I quicky took the grip. It would have been better to have a starker difference between each phase instead of just been written in the top right corner, but I guess you didn't have enough time.

About time and score, I'm not really a performance player, so I quickly forget.
But I can say I died many times on normal run (because I was curious, I'm not so bad I swear). I also died in Hard Mode, when I was on the last tile.
