Foundations by 0x746564
Foundations is a take on the Sir Tommy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Tommy) family of Solitaire games made for Ludum Dare 50 - "Delay is inevitable".
HOW TO PLAY:
Foundations is played in two phases, the "Build" phase and "Play" phase.
During the Build phase, reveal cards from the deck by clicking on it. Move cards from the Staging area to a tableau. There are no rules for building your tableaus. You can place a card in any tableau.
Once you've built your tableaus, the Play phase starts. In the Play phase, move cards to each of the four foundations from Ace to King in ascending rank regardless of suit (A♡ - 2♧ - 3♢ - 4♤ ... K♧).

Why did you make me lose after all this hard work xD Great concept!
I did not know this solitaire game and I liked it. It has this "trying again" vibes.
The end criteria has to be more clear, you wrote in a commet above that it is possible to win. Since you can't move the cards around on the tableau, the amount of moves needed to win is constant (52). But I have no idea how many moves I have and If I can get more.
@itskdog I get where you're coming from about the deck building being tedious. I was worried that would deter people from playing. There is a variation of Sir Tommy where 4 cards at a time are dealt. I did consider adding that as a feature, but I felt it made the game too easy. I probably needed some play testers earlier on. I might expand it post-jam to have an option to deal more cards at a time.
@bjornstahl Thanks for the bug report! I thought I caught all of the instances where the game should end during play phase, but I guess I missed something! If you've built your tableaus in such a way that you haven't trapped too many lower cards under higher cards then you should be able to win. There are only 52 moves needed. You can see a play through of a win on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/695496652
On my first attempt I was playing cards randomly, thinking when the next phase starts I'll be able to understand how to play, but as soon as the build phase ended so did the game 😱. Was only then that I read the instructions and won normal mode first try, I tried hard mode four times and got pretty close but couldn't quite do it. Again, really interesting system here.
Not being able to drag cards makes things slower, and sometimes the clicks didn't seem to go through, maybe they registered twice? Not sure. But it's a game jam so that's a bit whatevers. Cool game 👍
One nice quality of life feature might be to have the card fly to next valid foundation spot when clicked in the tableau (I could be mistaken and that breaks things).
I think a touch of audio and some light sound effects would have added a lot to the experience.
Honestly I want more card games in future LDs this was fun!
@silkmeloni @alks @realtanhen @mar3k thanks for playing!
@suchista I agree that it could use some audio. I was looking for some audio to add but ended up not finding anything I liked. I also recorded some card sounds but didn't end up using them.
@cedric86 Yes! It is possible to win! If you look a few comments up there is a vimeo of a win.
@jul-li If you hit the Escape key you could get a menu that would let you play a new game, or go back to the main menu. I should have put that somewhere in the game.
@eonarheim Someone else suggested having the cards automatically go to the foundations. I feel like this wouldn't break anything and I might try to add it post-jam.
@maychant Auto-selecting the card that's revealed is a great suggestion! I was trying to think of ways to make that part less tedious. Wish I had thought of that! I'll add it to the list for the post-jam version.
Subtle sounds could be a nice addition.
I like card games.
Congratulations!
1. Sometimes clicking on cards would select then rapidly deselect. This made basic interactions annoying.
2. Having to click to view next card on the deck was agitating. It added no value to the gameplay and could be short-circuited digitally by showing the next card automatically, then clicking the stack you want to place it on. This takes 3 mouse clicks down to just one for the build phase.
3. The gameplay itself was fun, though some visual hints of what valid options remain may have been nice (nitpick).
4. Finally, the game over screen felt like it was trying to force the theme on me by saying "THAT WAS INEVITABLE." I had that feeling all on my own without needing the game to bash me over the head haha :)
Overall, nice work but please consider the user experience for games like this since they can make or break its addictive nature.
1. I was hoping this was just my mouse, but others have experienced it as well. I might have caught it if I got feedback earlier on. I plan to fix it in the post-jam version.
2. Totally agree. I was worried it was too tedious, but I'm glad people are still playing it. I think dragging might help with this a bit, as well as making the top card from the deck automatically selected.
3. I'll this to the list of my post-jam fixes. I think undo would also be helpful, but wasn't happy with any of the implementations I came up with.
4. Guess I thought I was being clever, or something. :)

I've lost four times so far, but I'm going to keep playing until I get it. ;)
Edit
Got it!

@lcstark Hah! That's why I moved the foundations to the left-hand side. I didn't think anyone would be adventurous enough to try and make a tableau pile that large! I'll have to think about how to prevent that in my post-jam version. Good job on getting a win!
Nice job making a card game, I really love card games and making them! Overall, well done!
