Foundations by 0x746564

[raw]
made by 0x746564 for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Foundations is a take on the Sir Tommy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Tommy) family of Solitaire games made for Ludum Dare 50 - "Delay is inevitable".

HOW TO PLAY:

Foundations is played in two phases, the "Build" phase and "Play" phase.

During the Build phase, reveal cards from the deck by clicking on it. Move cards from the Staging area to a tableau. There are no rules for building your tableaus. You can place a card in any tableau.

Once you've built your tableaus, the Play phase starts. In the Play phase, move cards to each of the four foundations from Ace to King in ascending rank regardless of suit (A♡ - 2♧ - 3♢ - 4♤ ... K♧).

Hey there fellow card game maker :v:

Why did you make me lose after all this hard work xD Great concept!

I don't really see how this fits the theme, but I found it very fun - if you look past the theme, it's an excellent idea and game; one of the few that I think I'll be coming back to.

@nathanoc thanks for playing! My thoughts on the theme fit: you are delaying the inevitable loss by having to spend the time building up your tableaus. Probably a stretch...

I've never played the game but I liked it :) I kinda expected the interface to tell me that I could do no more moves and lost :( It looks great! If it's rigged so that you can never win it fits the theme okay, but I could not directly find the link :)

Very nice game. If you have extra time could you add card dragging.

@minthamie thanks for playing! Yea, the "game over" is a bit sudden and probably needed a "No more moves" label. You can win, the idea behind theme fit is that by having to build up the tableaus you are delaying the inevitable loss.

@jeff-kerman thanks for playing! I haven't been able to do any dragging that I'm happy with, but maybe I'll come back to it post-jam.

Interesting take on solitaire. I see the correlation you were going for with the theme but completed "stacks" seems like a win in my book hahah

For as long as it's been bundled with Windows computers, solitaire in general has been a way of putting off other work you're supposed to be doing; it's a nice game to see for this Ludum Dare. There's not much to it, but it makes for a fun little diversion. Audio and some quality-of-life additions like card dragging as others have mentioned already definitely would improve the experience (especially in terms of speeding up the build phase a bit and making it feel less aesthetically "empty"), I think.

Solid execution, nice entry ! I agree with the other commenter that card dragging would add a lot to the game, but it was fun nonetheless

Nice job trying to create something new out of a solitaire game. I'm not sure how much strategy there is to being able to setup the tableau before playing. It felt a little tedious. Maybe if more cards are drawn and then you can rearrange those cards. Like draw 5 cards at a time and set those up.

I think the inevitable part is spending hours trying to figure out the best strategy to place the cards during the deck phase XD.

I did not know this solitaire game and I liked it. It has this "trying again" vibes.

You nailed the look of the game, and it felt polished while playing it. Although I think I encountered a bug on my first playthrough, I selected a card during playphase that I had no where to move, this made me have to restart the game since I could not select any other card. Also when pressing esc and "try again" I could still not select any card so I had to refresh the browser.

The end criteria has to be more clear, you wrote in a commet above that it is possible to win. Since you can't move the cards around on the tableau, the amount of moves needed to win is constant (52). But I have no idea how many moves I have and If I can get more.

@anticdope @redoplus @valentines @1tater-no-tots @cover-club-media @sophiablabla @hmightypirate Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed the game! I agree that adding card dragging would be a nice improvement and will take another stab at it post-jam.

@itskdog I get where you're coming from about the deck building being tedious. I was worried that would deter people from playing. There is a variation of Sir Tommy where 4 cards at a time are dealt. I did consider adding that as a feature, but I felt it made the game too easy. I probably needed some play testers earlier on. I might expand it post-jam to have an option to deal more cards at a time.

@bjornstahl Thanks for the bug report! I thought I caught all of the instances where the game should end during play phase, but I guess I missed something! If you've built your tableaus in such a way that you haven't trapped too many lower cards under higher cards then you should be able to win. There are only 52 moves needed. You can see a play through of a win on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/695496652

That was pretty cool, I'm surprised how interested I was by a digital card game haha!
On my first attempt I was playing cards randomly, thinking when the next phase starts I'll be able to understand how to play, but as soon as the build phase ended so did the game 😱. Was only then that I read the instructions and won normal mode first try, I tried hard mode four times and got pretty close but couldn't quite do it. Again, really interesting system here.
Not being able to drag cards makes things slower, and sometimes the clicks didn't seem to go through, maybe they registered twice? Not sure. But it's a game jam so that's a bit whatevers. Cool game 👍

Great game! Only got the rules on the second try. It would have been nice to have "back to menu" button for when you make a ultimate mistake, or "cancel" option. Also sometimes I had to click quite a few times to pick a card. Other than that - extremely enjoyable. Would love to have this as a mobile game.

I definitely enjoyed the bit of solitaire. It took me a bit to develop a strategy for building my tableaus. I didn't realize I could cross suits in the foundation until I tried, I think without that the game would have been much more challenging.

One nice quality of life feature might be to have the card fly to next valid foundation spot when clicked in the tableau (I could be mistaken and that breaks things).

I think a touch of audio and some light sound effects would have added a lot to the experience.

Honestly I want more card games in future LDs this was fun!

Normal mode is kinda trivial but hard mode feels like a card game that fits into he Microsoft solitaire collection. Aside from allowing dragging, maybe auto selecting the card that's revealed would also be nice cause that'd be the only valid action after that.

@reeceyboi Yea, I had some issues with the clicks. I thought it might just be my mouse sensitivity, but I saw a streamer have the issue as well. Probably needed to use a different method of capturing input. I thought about adding dragging but I didn't want it to get in the way of finishing.

@silkmeloni @alks @realtanhen @mar3k thanks for playing!

@suchista I agree that it could use some audio. I was looking for some audio to add but ended up not finding anything I liked. I also recorded some card sounds but didn't end up using them.

@cedric86 Yes! It is possible to win! If you look a few comments up there is a vimeo of a win.

@jul-li If you hit the Escape key you could get a menu that would let you play a new game, or go back to the main menu. I should have put that somewhere in the game.

@eonarheim Someone else suggested having the cards automatically go to the foundations. I feel like this wouldn't break anything and I might try to add it post-jam.

@maychant Auto-selecting the card that's revealed is a great suggestion! I was trying to think of ways to make that part less tedious. Wish I had thought of that! I'll add it to the list for the post-jam version.

I like it, although I struggle to see the connection to the theme. I had never tried this variant of solitaire. The game seems pretty complete, so I wouldn't be surprised if people started playing this regularly :)

Subtle sounds could be a nice addition.

Very nice concept, the standard deck of cards forces a simplicity of design that few jam games have. I would really like to see some improved UX for the building stage though, if all you can do is place the next card into the tableau, it should auto-reveal the next card, and a single click should place it into a stack. Having to do it in 3x52 clicks (reveal, select, place) is a bit annoying... as if the game was delaying the inevitable, heh :p

Fairly straightforward, although I am not a massive fan of card games. I used to play solitaire back in the day but it was never something I enjoyed for the gameplay, just to pass the time. It was a bit frustrating having to click every time to move cards around, especially after a few tries. Being able to drag cards would have made it more smooth of a UX, in my opinion. Overall, good work!

Nice project! Great card game implemented digitally. The game's concept is quite fun, but I'm held back by the nuances of the User Experience.

1. Sometimes clicking on cards would select then rapidly deselect. This made basic interactions annoying.
2. Having to click to view next card on the deck was agitating. It added no value to the gameplay and could be short-circuited digitally by showing the next card automatically, then clicking the stack you want to place it on. This takes 3 mouse clicks down to just one for the build phase.
3. The gameplay itself was fun, though some visual hints of what valid options remain may have been nice (nitpick).
4. Finally, the game over screen felt like it was trying to force the theme on me by saying "THAT WAS INEVITABLE." I had that feeling all on my own without needing the game to bash me over the head haha :)

Overall, nice work but please consider the user experience for games like this since they can make or break its addictive nature.

@the-neon-shark thanks for the detailed feedback!

1. I was hoping this was just my mouse, but others have experienced it as well. I might have caught it if I got feedback earlier on. I plan to fix it in the post-jam version.

2. Totally agree. I was worried it was too tedious, but I'm glad people are still playing it. I think dragging might help with this a bit, as well as making the top card from the deck automatically selected.

3. I'll this to the list of my post-jam fixes. I think undo would also be helpful, but wasn't happy with any of the implementations I came up with.

4. Guess I thought I was being clever, or something. :)

Really nice entry! I always liked Solitaire, but I never played a Sir Tommy, so I kinda went into this blindly. During my first playthrough, I've stacked so many cards in one spot I couldn't then select the 10 at the bottom of the screen:

I've lost four times so far, but I'm going to keep playing until I get it. ;)

@lcstark Hah! That's why I moved the foundations to the left-hand side. I didn't think anyone would be adventurous enough to try and make a tableau pile that large! I'll have to think about how to prevent that in my post-jam version. Good job on getting a win!

Perhaps not the most innovative take on the theme or the most original idea, but for me there's a lot of replayability value exactly because card games like these are classics and really addictive. There were couple of times when the selected card lost "focus" all of a sudden (which may have been caused by my clumsy fingers on a laptop touchpad, mind you) but nothing big, and the game logic etc. worked flawlessly. All in all, nice game!

I'd never heard of this type of solitaire game, I think your additional requirement that you have to completely exhaust the deck into the tableau before starting the foundations is a nice take on it, compared to the rules on the wikipedia articles. There's some very nice feel to clicking the cards as well. Nice job!

18. Apr 2022 · 22:55 UTC
This is a really interesting twist on playing solitaire! The only real issue I had was clicking the cards, it seemed like a quick click didn't always highlight it, but a longer one did. It's not a big issue, but it made it a bit hard to move the cards around as quickly as I wanted.

Nice job making a card game, I really love card games and making them! Overall, well done!
