Asteroid Anarchy by Mateu

[raw]
made by Mateu for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

An asteroid is hurtling towards the Earth! A group of anarchists put a thruster on the asteroid to destroy the planet. It is your job to destroy the energy cores powering the thrusters. If you destroy all 5 of them, it will slow the asteroid down long enough for the people on Earth to escape.

Use WASD or arrow keys to control your ship. Hold space to shoot.

This is my second Ludum Dare! I really hope you all enjoy. Thanks to Common for doing all the 3d modeling. If you put a comment and rating on my game, I will do the same for yours.

BTW, my best remaining time was 44 seconds. If you can do better I would be impressed :)

EDIT 1: Fixed WebGL bug where the Earth would not appear. Gameplay.png MainMenu.png Tutorial.png

I like the graphics and the sound effects. The controls feel nice and the concept of rotating around a planet is fun. The animations are also great. I wish there was a faster way to restart the game though.

Greetings, the end sequence looks great, pretty intense to play. because of the the rotation of the planet iam not always sure where if my ray hits the target or if it flyes above, but i guess this is part of the fun.

The concept of the game is cool, the music is cool, but the movement back is somehow difficult, if it is so necessary, then it is quite inconvenient

Let me know if you guys were able to complete the game or not. I'd love to see how you do!

so with the web version, the wasd did nothing. space just pushed me down the page. in fullscreen mode wasd did nothing, and space did nothing. i used a controller, the left analog moved the ship, but nothing would shoot. with the windows version i could move the ship with wasd, but i could not shoot with any key on my keyboard, holding it down or pressing it.

@jcmonkey It appears that you did not click on the game. You were not focued on the game therefore the inputs did not register. Would you mind trying again and this time click on the game. Somehow you must have accidently clicked off of the page. Sorry about that. If that solution doesn't work, would you mind downloading the game and giving it a try? I would hate for you to not be able to play it because of an issue like that.

@mateu in my previous post, the first part was the web, and yes i clicked in the window, and i tried full screen. the second part was with the windows version that i downloaded.

@jcmonkey that's very strange. As far as I know, nobody who has played any of the versions have had those problems. Is there any special keyboard setup that you're using or something like that?

The audio after a while was a bit annoying but I had fun playing it and I did beat it.

Nice! I got a bit frustrated with the cutscene playing everytime I died (happened twice in a short succession), but I still beat the game  I liked the take on the theme!

Definitely had some fun with this one! I think the typewriter effect is a good choice because it makes me feel like I'm getting a mission briefing about having to go save the world. I'm also curious how you did the hit detection? Since the bullets look like they travel in a straight line but I was able to hit objects from really far away. Whatever you did was good, because otherwise we'd probably have to get really close to land shots. Maybe you could have had the projectiles as a child object of a pivot point at the center of the asteroid, and then rotate that pivot point? I think that would make it look like the projectiles are wrapping around the curve of the asteroid.

Constructive feedback I have for you is that the graphics don't feel too cohesive to me. Each individual piece is pretty good, like distinct silhouettes for each type of turret that clearly indicate how they're going to attack. But it almost feels like each piece was made in a different art style and then mixed together. The asteroid has pretty high detail geometry and texture, while the turrets are low poly and colored flat.

Controls felt great, played very smooth, and difficulty was perfect.

Really funny! Beat the game after many tries. Somehow, I either get shot near the very first reactor or live longafter the third.

Personally I had troubles getting my ship to maneuver around, it feels clunky to steer and eeven clunkier to change directions, which is kinda problematic when you try to dodge bullets. In my fiirst couple of tries I tried to be careful maneuvering bullets as I see em coming. But the bullets fly so fast and changing direction takes so llong that its just not possible to play the game that way. Only option I had was too keep moving, always keep moving. But then I didnt really feel like I dodged the lasers but more like their aim just diidnt catch up with my momentum.

Anyway, this all might just be cause I am not as good at videogames. Still the game looks really ccool and you managed to pull of an impressive amount of things in it. Bullet-hell, intro outro. Heck you thankuflly only made me sit through the briefing once instead of every time I died. Oh and I loved that whole revolving planet thing you have going on. Really cool game !

Fun little game!
I like that you only have to watch the intro and the defeat message once, makes retrying more fluid. Only complaint I have here is that you should be able to navigate the menu with the keyboard, or restart the game with spacebar, as moving your hands to the mouse qhich is only used in the menu disrupts the gameplay.

Going backwards don't feel that good as well, and I think it would be better to either let you go in all directions at the same speed and design around that, or to make it so you can't go backwards at all and design around that.

All in all, nice work!

That was a lot of fun! The gameplay was simple but very focused and it played well.
I liked the sound effects and the graphics looked very "Star Wars-y"

One MAJOR design flaw with the game is that you dont show the score once the player wins. I did a bunch of replays to try and optimize my run (yes I'm a sweaty try-hard) and I was really proud of one of my runs, but I forgot to look at the timer before the end sequence!

I did another less enthusiastic run and I finished with 40 seconds remaining :/

@skleembof I totally didn't even think to show the score. I didn't think people would actually care about speedrunning the game. That's awesome that you got 40 seconds though (or even better)! Congrats!

Man that game over sound never fails to make me laugh xD

Rather tough game, gives me Command and Conquer cutscene vibes, I dig it.

I liked the game. Difficulties arose during the passage, but when the meteorite fell to the ground, it was a funny sound, it reminded me of the game Angry Birds).

That ship controls like a shopping trolley with two broken wheels and was more fragile than the ego of a teenage drama queen. What I would have given for more control or a health bar. It was frustrating, having out-played the turrets, to die from accidentally grazing the edge of a building.

Other than that small nit pick, the game was enjoyable. I mean I played it repeatedly despite my frustrations.
What I mean to say is, its a solid entry. Well done!

Quite an atmospheric game. Graphics are nice, audio is good but a bit too repetitive. Sometimes I felt a bit cheated because I couldn't see towers behind me and got instantly destroyed. Overall nice entry! :)

Dang, well I played it about 10 times and still couldn't beat it. The one hit kill death is a bit harsh, would have loved maybe 2 or 3 hit points, especially since sometimes you can get blindsided from behind you. I love the 3D models and cutscenes, though I also wish they were skippable, particularly the end on since the game reset takes forever. Otherwise, I had a lot of fun!

Nice game, but with the one-hit and restricted movement it's very hard. Dodging bullets is too hard so the way I played was to fly around until I could approach the target without being in range of the turrets, then blast away. Which didn't leave me enough time to save Earth.

I loved the game over fiiiiiiiiu pum! Also I like the tinny detail of the atmosphere that you have created for the earth (IDK it is cool jeje)

Also I found interesting the fact that the curvature of the asteroid sometimes makes shooting a bit difficult.

Good job overall!

Thanks for this entry.

As @barelyevengames has mentioned, having skippable/shorter cutscenes especially after death would be great, still, it was fun nonetheless!

Fun game, controls felt smooth and audio works well with game/theme. Felt awkward to shoot while moving side to side because of the ship tilting though, and that plus all enemies killing me in one hit led me to try and just park the ship in a turret blind spot for each power plant enemy.

So many parts of this seemed to be on point! The feeling of being on the asteroid in space, the difficulty (took me about 5 tries to beat), even the clever choice to only play the intro once. A quick and simple idea, but showed a lot of solid design instincts!
