Commentary

This was a first game I made in Godot. It’s a great engine and already prefer it to Game Maker 2, which I used to use. However, I still had to learn many things during this Ludum Dare, which would now make me significantly more productive. I originally wanted to have branching dialogs, but I ended with such a mess of a spaghetti code, that I was unable to debug and fix it in a reasonable time, so I had to decide for one-side dialogs only. Maybe next time! Known issues: * Sometimes the dialog abruptly ends when you skip the last text of the dialog by pressing Space.

Tools used.

If you want to open the game, you just need Godot 3.4.

  • Sounds made with BFXR;
  • Voices made in FL Studio using VST Speek 3.

  • Most of the visual assets were created in Inkscape, all of them are in .svg files.

  • In some cases, Aseprite was used, projects are in their .ase files.

Nice game :). I survived 64 days. It says in the instructions to click on the wooden log in the corner but I couldn't find one. It also says I can upgrade the weapons but I don't know how either.

The weapons should have keyboard shortcuts, spend a lot of time moving the mouse between buttons and earth :)

Oh yeah, the whole story reminds me of the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy

well done :)

Really nice game! I loved all the dialogue. I died on day 48 (just as the said "I'm sorry. I love you, you know?"), but had a bug where the dialog (and the days counter) continued afterwards, so I was able to see the rest of the dialogue.

The gameplay itself was a bit confusing - it took me a while to realize the different buildings were just different attacks, and even then I had no indication of what was the difference between them. I seemed to be barely able to affect the meteor's speed, and it only ever really changed due to story events.

Nevertheless, it was still a very amusing entry!

@grrr-alena glad you liked the game! I wanted to rate yours, but seems that you haven’t submitted any. I will be looking forward to rate your future game in the next Ludum Dare. :)

@rex64 thank you for playing! That’s pretty impressive though, I usually go to like 45 or so. :) Rated your game as well!

@smiley oh no! After 34 hours of working, I was simply copying the markdown text from my previous entry and forgot to remove the wooden log mention. It’s from the other game, don’t look for wooden logs in space. Sorry about that! :D Great suggestion with keyboard controls, thank you for that. And for playing! Rated your game as well!

@frogman I wanted to fix the dialog going over game over screen, but I was out of time. They barely affect the meteor speed, but they do. But can’t stop the inevitable. :) I will rate your game once I am on Windows, I am stuck on Mac now. Or if you manage to make Mac/HTML5 build, do let me know!

I was focused on the top and missed a lot of the dialogue at first(and yes, I also looked for a log in space lol I'm not smart). I like that you get more funds later and can go all out and still just have to watch as the meteor gets closer and closer, and how it changes depending on how close it is.
Like someone mentioned, after losing the dialogue keeps showing up and the days keep on going up. I know it's a bug but it was kind of nice to see it, because I died really fast haha. Got to about 45.

The game was fun, especially the dialogue. It's a good reading of the theme, and even though I only lived 51 days

The alien dialogue is very funny. I like the formal corpo speech at first and then it gets... well. Not gonna spoil it, but very funny writing.

@payaosito thank you for playing! And I see that this bug is a blessing in disguise. :)

@moonblast glad you liked the game! I will rate yours on weekend, I am not on Windows now and don’t have any Windows machine handy, sorry for that. But I will keep it in mind. :)

@tosmaster glad you liked the dialog! At least that one year of work as a 2nd line IT support was good for something. :) Rated your game back, absolutely amazing one!

@alexhoratio super glad to hear that you liked the game this much! Unfortunately, cannot play yours - the Mac build is damaged for some reason. But I will be on Windows on weekend, so I will rate it then. :)

What a very interesting game! The dialog was pretty good and silly, it had some charm too it.

Pacing was a little slow but that was the only issue I found :)

Very cool game! I liked how the gameplay was there to support the dialogue/story, worked well here. Wish the pacing was bit faster but overall really enjoyed the game!

It's really Earth's fault for being in the way of a new development. I'm sure they tried to let us know ahead of time.

Fun game, nice clean art, good dialogue. It would be nice to have more feedback or make it more obvious what the attacks do and what strategies are working or not. Great job though and I hope you continue loving Godot!

The dialogues were funny, at first I was super focused on the game and kept on waiting then dragging, then I realized that wasn't much point of the game. Then I lost, but the dialogues kept on going, don't know if it was a bug, but yeah, I got to enjoy the dialogue even though my planet got destroyed. poor alien

@a-chill-lemur I agree, and someone surely didn’t receive the mail that was sent in advance.

@weirdybeardyman you’re definitely right about the feedback. Will keep in mind for the next time. :) And I definitely love it, much better than Game Maker and quicker than Unity. I am surprised by how many Godot games I see this year, I was used to seeing Unity all day back in previous LDs. :)

@conradoclark so sorry for that! I need to proofread better next time!

@aka-black-dog thank you for the comment. I will play your game on the weekend, because I am stuck on Mac now and I will be able to get on Windows by then.

@adobobo definitely bug, but it’s a blessing in disguise, because it means you don’t need to play it again. :) And yeah, aliens should think about the mental well being of their workers! This cannot be sustainable!

I love a good story entry. I think telling a story with simple interactions works well for a game jam. I had a little trouble following some of the dialogue and speaker changes but got the gist.

The graphics were sufficient for the purpose.

I only had simple sounds. In the credits it looked like maybe there should have been music and voice.

Great job making a game in 48 hours!

@blockerz thank you for a great feedback! Yea, I made the music control button, but I was out of time to make the music, hopefully I will make some next time! And understandable that you had a trouble following the dialog, I unfortunately had no time to fix that either. Rated your game back. :)

I lasted 64 days. I had the meteor travelling so fast in the other direction at one point, but alas I could not delay the inevitable. The dialog makes the game though. Very funny. Solid entry.

Good stuff :8ball:
