In What Have You Drawn?, you are a young artist afraid of showing their work. Using your paint gun, you'll try rejecting the people who want to see your sketchbook. But do you really think improvement can be reached without confronting harsh criticism? Be cautious though! Too much criticism can lead to despair...

How to play?

Leveling Up

In order to upgrade your character, you'll have to drop your sketchbook. A canvas appears on the map whenever an enemy hits you ; interact with it to gain new abilities! You can gain your life point back if you manage to pick up the book before your enemies do. You can only level up once in each world.

Coloring the world around you

Whenever you let your enemies pick up your sketchbook, their feedback helps you deepen your artistic skills. Your perspective on things change, and a brand new world appears before your eyes. It is now time to level up again!

Controls (better with a gamepad!)

The speed boost unlock at level 2, and the shockwave at level 4.

Keyboard

  • WASD to move (no need to switch to QWERTY if you don't have that kind of keyboard)
  • E to interact with the canvas
  • Q to use the speed boost
  • Space to use the shockwave
  • Aim with the mouse, shoot with left click

Gamepad

  • Left Stick to move
  • A/Cross to interact with the canvas
  • B/Circle to speed boost
  • X/Square to shockwave
  • Right Trigger to shoot
  • Right stick to aim

  • Paul Mozet - programer and game designer

Softwares we used

  • Unity 2021.2
  • Photoshop
  • Wwise
  • Logic Pro X, Pigments & Spitfire Audio BBC Orchestra
  • Not a software at all but we used the Rubik Bubbles font (https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Rubik+Bubbles)

Known Bugs

There is a rare bug that we couldn't manage to fix, where the game will enter a perma slow mo/freeze state. Relaunching the game will solve the problem temporarily, but as it seems to be pretty rare, you shouldn't experience it twice.

If you play with keyboard and mouse, you may experience a little offset between the point you aim at with the mouse and the point you will actually shoot at.

Also we haven't been able to test the Mac version, we chose to upload it nonetheless but we can't say for sure if it will work as intended.

Unlocking progression by becoming more vulnerable is an interesting mechanic! I enjoyed it a lot.

I like the idea of being able to progress through sacrificing your lives. The art, animations and transitions are great! A little detail that you could add is changing the cursor's sprite to match the aesthetic of your game and make it evolve with the player.
Managed to get to the last world but didn't last long in there hahahahha

Very snappy! The sound effects, recoil and hit particles had plenty of juice. I didn't feel much incentive to progress past the first world but, the canvas mechanic is the kind of choke point a top down shmup needs to keep players interested. Great work!

A very interesting concept! Having to take damage to obtain a new upgrade gives an interesting progression, and fits perfectly the theme. Plus the evolving art style that goes along is really cool to discover. I thought the game would be more playable on gamepad, but the actions with the buttons makes it hard to aim and draw or use the shockwave at the same time. Also I didn't get the rule for upgrades on the first run, I don't know how it could be communicated in the game. Overall it's a very clever idea, that conveys a nice story!

I love top down shooters, so I was bound to like this one!

Loving the idea with the evolving art as you progress through the game!

The only thing that kind of bothered me was screenshake while attacking. I'd suggest toning it down a bit.

Good job!

I really love the hand drawn art style for the character and enemies in this. Having different enemies and map design for each of your lives is really cool as well. One of my favourite entries so far.

Love the style and gameplay. The game is quite captivating.
Q is an odd choice for dash though - it's difficult to dash while moving left. Shift would've been nicer.
And mouse cursor is barely visible against some backgrounds, it makes it harder to aim.
Overall, it's a really cool game!

Oh man, the green dude's idle animation is my spirit animal. The art is fantastic, and I low how every stage completely changes the art style around. The transition effect from one level to another is also incredibly well done! Great job!

Wow, this game is JUICED, everything feels so satisfying, the screenshake, the transitions, the sounds, everything here feels amazing to play, outstanding. Honestly hard to believe it was made in only 72h xD it's so thematically strong and visually interesting, the mechanics are par for the course for top down shooters, but the addition of the progression being tied to "exposing" your art to criticism was brilliant, even more so having in mind that i can actually recover the page beforehand, i'd just like to add that at least in windowed mode, while walking, my shots were actually going far away from where my mouse was. I feel like with a bit more time the levels/transitions could be even cooler, drawing inspiration from the artistic periods, and taking us through surrealism, cubism, realism and whatnot. Really inspired idea, and amazingly executed, congrats to everyone involved, this is superb, amazing entry!

Nice! Very good entry :) Loved the graphical style and the whole theme, changing the painting and giving color was a really neat idea. Shooting was also very satisfying with the blood explosions and the screen shake. Next iteration I would love if the camera panned slightly in the direction you aim (like in Battlerite), that would make it easier to see where you're going. Brilliant game, loved it!

The atmosphere is special but really makes you want to restart a game immediately! The sound and juicy effects are very clean. I find the progression of the difficulty a little too brutal. From the third piece it becomes very difficult to recover "power". The mechanic "die to progress" is not really intuitive but has the merit of being original and adapting well to the theme. Nice job!

The mood is very unique, kudos! It handles quite well, too, which is vital for a game like this. The game takes a while to get going, though; feels like there's more downtime than necessary.

Oh, there's also a little typo in the version I played: when unlocking the speed boost upgrade, the game says it's A on the keyboard, while in reality it's the Q key.

Overall, though, a very memorable experience! Well done.

Really love the progression style tied in with the graphics, very artsy and fun. Gameplay is hard but rewarding once you get the hang of it, and I think it could be made even more interesting if expanded in different ways.

Great work!

What an amazing experience! Very original to have to take hits to level up! I think it delivers an intersting message. The art direction is great the gameplay feels good and it's juicy with particle effects, well done!

That was great! The game is so juicy, just moving and shooting is already fun enough!

But the mechanic where you have to get your life back or the enemies will get stronger is really good a creating tension and pacing the experience!! At the beginning I really thought there was way less mechanics, because it took me a while to lose my first life, but after that, I was fighting with all I had and I really was "in the zone"!

I think there could be some "micro" tweaks to do to make the experience even better: like dezooming the camera when you move, since the camera adds an offset that prevents you from seeing far in front of the direction you're going, it can be a bit frustrating, especially at the end when you have a lot of ennemies.

Other than that, as I said, near perfect UX and juiciness, with feedbacks everywhere. Dynamic pacing that react perfectly to the player's way of playing.

A really great job !

Juicy feels, amazing art and sound !

I was a bit lost at what to do at first even though I've read the description lol. After reaching 1000 score, I finally remembered something about getting touched to progress  But the enemies were already faster by then so I died rather fast lol.

I was able to take every power-up on my 2nd run though, so all good !

Good job on this entry ! :tada:

Nice entry ! Graphics, audio, controls, mood, juiceness all feel great in this game !

The upgrade mechanic was not very clear to me at the beginning, however. But once we get it, it's a clever idea :)

Wonderful! Loved it! Really a fun concept and the visual look was amazing. I especially loved the transitions when getting hit and the edges of the world. Two things, I kept clicking outside the window and the game lost the focus. I think it continued to play during that time. I would recommend something like fullscreen (even if it needs black bars to force 4:3) or pausing the game when clicking outside the window. Other thing, the Mac build didn't work. The PC version did, but the Mac one refused to launch.
