Tax Haven by Weirdybeardyman

[raw]
made by Weirdybeardyman for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Fixed a bug 6th April - Stopped net disappearing when reaching polygon limit.

In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.

You thought because you were a billionaire you could just hide away in a sunny tax haven, sailing your superyacht around, drinking piña colada’s and not pay us a penny.

Well we’re the HMRC. As we speak your little piece of paradise is being surrounded and an amphibious naval destroyer is inbound. hmm Just try and wriggle out of this one.

Instructions - Escape for as long as possible from the HMRC amphibious ship that is chasing you. The more fuel you burn the more expenses you can deduct and the lower your tax bill will be in the end. - It will lay a net behind it so be careful not to get trapped in that. - You have a canon which can firing incriminating documents overboard. The HMRC want to get their hands on your documents so they will make a beeline for them and give you a chance to gain breathing space. - Watch out for the red buoys, they will slow you down if you crash into them, but if you navigate carefully you can use them to slow the chaser down instead.

Controls - Use WASD or the Arrow Keys to move your superyacht around. - Aim with the mouse and click or press space to fire your incriminating documents overboard.

Super enjoyable!

Great interpretation of the theme and a good sense of humour to the whole thing

I would have liked a way to get more documents when you run out (apologies if I've missed something)

Really good game overall though, the little sea birds just flying around and chilling is a nice touch too!

One thing.. I didn't find the document mechanics that obvious.. but still a very good idea.
Good job on this one :thumbsup_tone1:

Lovely game!! Super original idea, the execution is superb, the game feels super smooth and it's supepr fun to play. I loved the humor of throwing papers to distract them, I'm not sure if the map is generated randomly but that would add a layer of replayability.A leaderboard would also be a fine adition, congrats on your game!!

@webox thanks very much! yep the levels were generated randomly, but it was too laggy to do that when you load the game, so I pre-generated about ten different levels and pick randomly from them. Yeah a leaderboard would definitely be a good addition.

Thanks very much! @jhax @purpledartfrog yep that's a good point, the documents mechanic could use a bit of work.

Nice game! I'm not sure I fully got the hang of the document throwing (although I like the idea of pitching your audit documents overboard!).

I didn't find out the document throwing utility (else than slow down a little the pursuit), and I didn't manage to go under ~68k£ because the net happen to disappear near 70k and I didn't have enough memory to remind me where it was (because even invisible, it yet catches me ^^).
But appart those little things, this is a solid entry, I had fun searching the best avoiding strategy (one part is to not let the chaser go out of the screen, and even stand by it on some turns, to keep enough space for the next passages), and the arts and animations are very polish, you made something really good in so few time, well done!

@lereveur wow £68k is pretty impressive! I never got that far. Whoops I'm sorry the net disappeared, apparently there is a vertex limit of 4096 for a line2D in Godot. Thanks for letting me know, I'll try and patch that! Thanks very much for playing and for the feedback!

I suggest you try with the little strategy I mentionned, this is very effective to keep a large place to turn in for a long time  (ie. keep the chaser on the screen to have an eye on it, and round along the net in a shrinking spiral)
I supposed it was this kind of limit that causes the bug. In most of the games with a trail or something like this, the trail disappear from the start, and so in this game it would be not such a problem - but here, the net disappear from the end, so if you find a way to delete earlier parts when the length reach 4095, instead of last parts, I think this could solve the problem

@lereveur the engine has an option to increase the polygon buffer. How much longer do you think it would be possible to keep going with your strategy, do you think doubling the limit would be enough that it would never be reached?
LeReveur
06. Apr 2022 · 15:48 UTC
Honestly I don't know, but if you want me to test a "double-buffer" version, I will try it and give you feedback
The best help would be that you include somewhere a way for me to read the effective polygons used at the end (maybe with a hidden command, like a key to press on the end-game page), so that I can tell you how many I used if I do not reach the end, in case of double-buffer adds a lag on the game and you wants to know the optimised number to use

@lereveur thanks but don't worry I managed to fix it by spawning a new line polygon when nearing the buffer limit, so it will never disappear. Thanks for letting me know about this!

I really wanted to try to reach 0 to see what would happen but couldn't get quite far enough! It was a fun game to play, the graphics looked great and I enjoyed the sounds, overall really nice! :D

@korfi wow that's an impressive score! Good job you didn't make it to £0 really because it would have been rather anti climactic, nothing would have happened :D maybe I should have made it possible and made the ship stop chasing you then, but let's just say it is "inevitable" that you have to pay some tax :D thanks for playing!

Clever game design, juicy sprites and particles. The music is charming, the graphics have nice touches like animated birds, and the enemy will turn amphibious if you beach your craft. Executed very cleanly!

I like ejecting the documents overboard, something feels very satisfying about that. I never manged to get very far as I would always run into the trail. I enjoyed the cat and mouse game though, might be interesting to force the AI to navigate around islands, could be fun to dodge them that way.

This was fun and executed quite well. The pixel graphics were neat. The HMRC totally cheats though - what kind of boat can drive on land!

Neat experience. Well done!

I was picking up some positive sea shanty vibes from the music, really put me in the mood to avoid the tax person. I managed to find a strategy I was happy with to avoid the HMRC by tossing documents slightly backwards left or right.

I enjoyed the experience, clever take on the "death and taxes" inevitability as well!

I enjoy the sailing along with the music and documents throwing except HMRC chasing. Good entry!

Great game! Got to around 78k. I found out that sticking to the border is probably the best approach.

The idea of tax evasion is super funny!

I’ve seen quite a few tax interpretation of the theme, but this was the most fun to play and the original idea. Love the cynicism of using the burnt fuel as tax deductible... and I can imagine it IRL. :) Controls were smooth and throwing felt very satisfying. Great artstyle and colors as well!

I love the spin on classic chase games with the "net" mechanic and think the game fits in with the theme perfectly. Probably one of the most fun games I've played yet! I've got no critiques to dish. Graphics are cute, audio is impeccable, bugs are non-existent... good job!

@theludovyc yep they always start a the top middle of the map. I should probably have added some indicator, or a radar for when they're off screen and maybe randomly set their position. Thanks for playing!

That was good, I am still not sure about the point of the documents. At first I thought the game was just the case of dodging the line, but one I realised you can make the HMRC run into the red circles, it was a lot more fun to try and dodge them while also baiting them into hitting the obstacles, well done!

From time to time, I feel exactly like the main character from this game. Well, I don't do anything illegal, but dealing with documents is actually stressful to me. Not so long ago, I managed to discover http://maktechblog.com/signing-pdf-files-characteristics-and-possibilities/ , and the situation has improved a lot, but I still don't even want to think about it.
