Crash Override

EDIT: I have added a highscores table. I have also reduced the difficulty of the game and made the win condition for the AI a bit more so hopefully the games will last a bit longer. I finished it with 8 minutes left on the jam time.

Second Edit: I had to spend 13 minutes of the submission hour to fix a bug I had introduced with the previous update. The game would restart with the AI in super mode so, it needed to be sorted. Apologies!

Note: You can move the command prompt in case of visibility issues. Technically, the pop ups are moveable too.

Intended Resolution: 1366 x 768

I heavily suggest that you read the list of commands listed below before playing.

A short, relatively fast paced game where you play as a hacker trying to disrupt the AI 'Da Vinci' from taking over the internet. Yes, this was heavily based off of the movie Hackers.

Enter commands into the terminal to perform actions. Actions increase your score but will also cause a reaction from the AI (the reaction can be the same as the last so you might often find yourself entering in the same commands)

If you are afk for a period of time, the AI operates on its own and becomes super powerful very fast.

You cannot beat the AI, only delay the inevitablity of it taking over the internet. There is a rudimentary scoring system to keep track of how well you have done.

Player Commands (all add points to your score):

-help Shows a list of all commands available to the player

-ddos Sends a denial of service attack to the AI. This slows the AI down, increases the time you have on a shutdown screen and also reduces the AI score. If you try to use this too often, it will only decrease your score if the previous effects are still on the AI.

-ping Pings the AI, which increases it's action time. This effect has a cooldown timer, but you will not be penalised for multiple uses.

-purg Purges all virus pop ups from the screen

-cdwr Clears all adware pop ups from the screen

-cmwr Clears all malware from the screen

-worm Uploads a worm to the AI, which reduces its score every tick for a period of time. The amount it's reduced by is then transferred to your score. If a worm is already active on the AI then it will not have any effect.

-dump Clears the input disruptor that the AI can use on you

AI Actions

Reduce player score. Does not activate if your score is 0.

Virus - if one is already active, it will add another pop up on screen. It will keep adding pop ups until purged.

Input Disruptor - if memory has not been dumped, has a chance to change the character you have entered into the command

Adware - you lucky winner! And you get a pop up telling you so

Malware - whilst active, will decrease the player score over time

Shutdown - tries to shutdown the terminal. Cancel must be clicked! If not, the game ends.

It can get a bit hectic if you don't keep up!

I have been writing a blog about the development of this game and partaking in the game jam in general, you can view it here https://lexicon-app.com/blog/31162914-f857-4df6-a1f9-59793f75e5ae

p.s. I'm still in the development stage of my site so the entire site doesn't look great, let alone the blog page. Apologies for that.

One final note:

I am not a game developer nor am I a graphic designer. I have entered this competition for a bit of fun and to learn more about Unity.

actually fun game & idea! i wish it had some real commands too (or not sure if it had?) like would need to go find directories and delete bad files or something.

My intention was to add all of that stuff you said but I had some issues with development and lost so much time :( so I had to just make the minimum viable product

Cool concept though I think difficulty ramps up a little too quick, especially since it takes some time to learn the commands. Also, I am really not a fan of your inputs sometimes randomly being the wrong letter especially since you have no way of knowing if it was wrong if the malware is blocking it. Forces you to just keep typing the same command until it works

It progresses a bit fast and it a bit unclear at first what to do. Eventually you get the hang of it.

This is a pretty good thing for only three days, i think mine is more rough around the edges

I had a lot of fun with this! Linux is my main OS so having a terminal based game was very appealing. I found the input disruptor was pretty annoying, otherwise it was really fun having to multitask and prioritize which commands to enter as the AI got faster.

@cactusdan thanks for the feedback! Really glad that you enjoyed it. Yeah the input disruptor is kind of a hot topic. I've set it to only have a 10% chance to activate but it seems to still cause some issues. The main rationale behind it was to get the player to prioritize getting rid of that effect. Potential design flaw for sure. Great feedback from you and everyone else that's commented. It's my first game so I'll learn from the comments for the next jam :) thanks again!

@danc2236 Wait we could get rid of the input disruptor? I tried a few different commands, but couldn't figure out how to disable it. Besides that though, pretty neat idea! I liked the Jankdos loading screen

@ordineu thanks for the feedback! Yeah the input disruptor seems to be the annoying aspect of my game. I've played it hundreds of times in development so I find it quite easy to deal with, but obviously not everyone is going to sink a lot of time into this. I've still got a few hours before the event closes so maybe I'll remove it. But the command for removing the input disruptor is '-dump'

Glad you liked the idea :) I hope you saw that you could move the console window for when the pop ups get too much :D

Very intense game. The concept and the artwork are great. I think it is a bit too difficult at the beginning and its hard to know what to do.

It's a very intense and difficult game to play. I guess it takes time to master it. Good idea and implementation though!
I liked how you need to multitask with the commands and clicking on the jankdos button.

Love the concept and the music is just great. It took me a while until I noticed that I'm not doing all those typos. Great job.

Extremely intense cybersecurity game! I didn't found a way to get the commands to work, typing both with and without "-", what i could be doing wrong?
Still this is a very impresive entry, great game! :v:

Love the concept! Reminded me of Welcome to the Game 1 and 2. That input distruption was a very clever addition! I didn't understand what was happening first but then I was like "ooooooooh that's really cool" and honestly this is pretty good from someone who is new to game development. Good job!

Hack the planet! One of my favorite movies :) I really liked the idea, although I did find it difficult to keep up with all the things going on. Really minor nitpick but I wish the commands didn't need the dash in front of them. Lots of small good details though, nice work.

@ds-nahogara hey, thanks for the feedback :) so you might have had the input disruptor active which might have changed some characters. I've reduced the probability of this occuring now. But give it another go and just type "-help" at the beginning to try and see if you can get the commands working. I also added a highscores table if you want to check it out :)

@kurrik Thanks for the feedback! It's one of my all time favourite movies too haha. Yeah it can get quite hectic that's for sure. I've reduced the difficulty a bit and added a highscores table if you want to give it another go

a really fantastic game, but I'm not pretty sure the death condition of player, but I still have fun remove all the windows poped out. After playing it three time, I think it is actually a typing game and you need to typing all the time! I think it can add more interactive with the "worm" I send to ai and more way to attack ai.Still, it's a fantastic game! I think this game may help more people learn the knowledge of network security!! A really innovative game!!

@lussiousli Thanks for the feedback! Yup you're definitely correct with it being a typing game. You have to constantly enter commands to get any score on the board for sure. With regards to the player lose condition, the AI is just constantly gaining points as soon as the first attack it makes. Then it's just calculating points based on how many pop ups are open, malware etc etc. I agree with you about the interaction with the worm and ddos attacks. I didn't have enough time to get something in there. Glad you enjoyed it though :) thanks for the kind words. I might spend some time and improve the game for after the event with all the great feedback I've gotten. Thanks!

Pretty intense :) I'd like a bit more to enter the commands without the "-" but still very nice and cruel. A good touch on the theme.

Fun concept and very different. It took a quite a few attempts to get the commands right, I'm not nimble fingered enough to keep up with the commands but i really enjoyed trying :P The music really ramps up the intensity as you are playing. My only gripe would be that the learning curve is very steep and on most runs i ended up with no score so cannot gauge whether i did OK or crap. Loved it though :)

Pretty good idea, but not my type of the game. If I could operate with keyboard and commands it'll be more attractive for me than when you need every second switch between keyboard and mouse. But it's just my opinion.

Love the idea but wasn't able to score any point. Done ddos and worms. Also the anti ad didn't work form me...

Fun game but controls are a little hard to see and remember. Either way it helps with the intensity.

This is very fun and original, having to type the required commands faster & faster in the terminal to delay the inevitable, each having a different effect, pop ups on the screen hiding what you type, input disruptor... The only thing it lacks is better feedback of how the AI is doing. It's a little hard to remember the commands at first but you quickly get used to it. The mood and rhythm are good, this is a solid entry, congrats!

I'm glad I tried hard to have the highest score haha
