Ludum Dare April 2022 - "Delay the Inventible":

Into the Depths

My submission for the Ludum Dare Game Jam!

This is Skelly

Skelly.png

He needs to get food for the winter, but his food only grows down in the depths of the earth. The deeper Skelly goes, the bigger the depths get...

Skelly needs to delay his family's demise and gather food, but he also needs to delay his torch from going out before he can get the required amount of food.

Gather torches to stay alive! Gather blue mushrooms to survive the winter.

Help Skelly!

Navigate through the maze of the depths:

It's very fun and I love this idea, the only problem I had was it didn't fit very well on my screen but overall it was a great entry.

Taking that risk to backtrack to a mushroom you've missed makes this a really nice and tense experience! It would however been nice to have a somewhat smoother movement, as the instantaneous jumping of the camera is somewhat jarring. Nice submission either way!

Amazing idea! It totally fitted the theme and it provided some really nice puzzles. The graphics were also nice, while the mazes/puzzles were well designed. The start of each level was quite confusing and a smooth camera movement would also be better. Nice job, kudos!!

I appreciated that there was different text for the amount of mushrooms you needed, but I have to say it got really frustrating waiting for the dialogue to finish every level, especially in the early levels which were really short. When the torch gets low there's dialogue that doesn't interrupt the game loop, I think that would've been a better place for the "only 20 more to go" lines

@cornfab, I agree about the text loading and not letting you move being kind of frustrating. I had a flag that allowed movement and didn't allow movement when the text was playing and I probably should have just kept that out of the final project.

@jonrei The green mushrooms are meant to be bad mushrooms. I kind of left that out of the how to play to give a bit of mystery. It probably should have explained that a bit better in the intro / when you pick them up. Thanks for playing though :)

@sawyer I totally get you on the player not fitting. It was my first time trying the web player for a jam and I had some last minute issues with the display / rendering on the page.

Really good little puzzle game; contrary to other comments, I thought the jump movement worked quite well (I think a smoot move would slow things down too much).
I agree with the first comment about the screen size; it could have done to be a lot smaller.

Cool entry, I like the idea and the rooms can be quite challenging (which I like). I think the zoom-in animation shouldn't happen on every floor though and it was sometimes a little hard to distinguish between wall and floor.

Fun take on the theme and a great job with finishing this in a weekend!
Only feedback I can give is that I would have like knowing that non-blue mushrooms lower the amount of blue mushrooms you have earlier.

Good Job!

Nice game with nice graphics and pretty music. I only wish I could hold down the movement buttons instead of having to press them again and again.

@thegameoverguy AH! It all makes sense to me now! I was just picking up all the mushrooms :D Im guessing im destroying the blue mushrooms if i picked up a green one recently?

@cievers Thanks for your feedback, I wanted to do something like that but I ran out of time in the end. It was on my wish list as well as a bit easier movement controls. Testing that game out and having to press the key everytime was tiring lol.

@jonrei Yeah, Skelly mentions them being spoiled versions of the blue mushrooms. That dialog is all randomly selected so it could be a couple of times before it specifically tells you that. Thanks for the feedback!

@amkingtrp I totally understand the feedback on the size of the screen. I am not used to the web player stuff for unity / itch and I was having a bit of a rendering / ui problem when it was a bit smaller. Thanks for the feedback :)

At first I was confused what the blue mushrooms were because they didn't really look like mushrooms to me and getting them and a green one cancels each other out so my count didn't change.
Once I figured it out though, it was very fun trying to navigate the maze before my light went out.
I managed to make it on depth 140.

Well designed mechanics and very enjoyable game overall!

@amkingtrp per your suggestion, I tried shrinking the player a bit. Hopefully it renders a bit better now!

@ludevum Hey! Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate you checking out the game. I tried to make the how to play showcase the difference between the two mushrooms visually. I think maybe an example floor with a bad mushroom and a good mushroom would have been a better idea!

Your game was neat and reminded me of gameboy games from back in the day. Nice bit of fun nostalgia. The main torch mechanic with traversal was very neat as well!

After a few unfortunate tries, I managed to finish the game. Has pointed out above, this a little boring having to wait the character comment at the start of each level, and sometimes, the random generator is not kind with the player :P - But I liked playing this game, and some things in it, for example that taking the last mushroom is not sufficient to finish, and that I had to find the exit to properly win.
Good job!

@lereveur Yes, I noticed a bit of unbalanced play with the random generation at times. I had the idea for scaling as you get deeper, but I ultimately ran out of time. Thanks for playing!

Nice game. I playerd 4 times but I do not manage to collect all mashrooms- always ended up nearly 20. One thing I would change is this long animation after scene loding- it's ok but once or two when character say something, otherways is a bit frustating.

Did not managed to get all 20, but liked the mood and mechanics

This was great, I loved the music and when it zoomed in each floor and slowly typed. Awesome way to be immersive in such a simple game. Great job!

The game is really fun and stressful in a way that aren't common in game jam entries. Every torch and blue mushroom felt like a huge victory as you found your way through the labyrinths. My only recommendations would be to win the game immediately after getting 20 mushrooms rather than the exit after collecting said 20 mushrooms and to add multiple exits to each level so players have more freedom to explore. Fun game!

@tornadopiggie Thanks for your feedback! I am glad you enjoyed it. I do agree with you about improving the win condition and still forcing to reach the exit. I encountered a few times where I "won", but I lost while trying to get to the exit. Maybe a closer exit upon win will work better.

The multiple exits would be better the hard the levels are, but I encountered a few bugs where the exit was blocking a huge path and I forced them to be in the top left or right of the maze given the time restriction.

Thanks again for playing!

Graficos simples, mas bonitos. Achei bem encaixada a parte sonora. Interessante a ideia de pegar tochas pra não ficar no escuro. Só me confundi porque normalmente cogumelo verde é vida no mario e o roxo é venenoso :p
Da pra fazer um jogão com essa base, bom trabalho
