Holy Ship by jamjamix

[raw]
made by jamjamix for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

In Holy Ship you play a downtrodden pirate trying to save their sinking ship. It's too far along to truly save, so just do your best and enjoy what time you have left as you delay the inevitable! At least you have plenty of rum!

How to play

You can patch leaks, pick up bottles and buckets, bail out water, or drink rum. Be careful though you can only hold one thing at a time.

Controls:

-'W, A, S, D' to move around
-'R' to interact
-'X' to drop what's in your hand (performing an interact task will auto-drop what's in your hand)

Looks very pretty, I had a lot of feedback to all my actions and I played through all the levels, although I never unlocked the first chest until the last level as there wasn't enough of the water holes to patch up and in the first level I was just standing around and decided to jump into the water since I was a bit confused there, maybe there should be some indication that I have to patch a certain amount and/or they should come a bit faster. Good game!

Holy Ship! Really enjoy how this game looks, how getting tipsy literally tips the ship, and the smoothness of moving around. I'd drop my bucket fairly often when trying to bail out water instead of using it - though I could've just been pressing the button at the wrong time. Great job on this one!

Simple premise which was a lot of fun! One comment I would make is that it seemed very easy to pick up another bucket while attempting to scoop out water. Perhaps I misunderstood something about the controls, but that was in some ways the thing which added the most difficulty.

Graphics are good for a jam, they improved the entire game, simple mechanics but actually fun to do the tasks... And the ship variation was nice as well :)

Really liked how it looked and the overall aesthetic! Controlled quite well though my mouse cursor wasnt locked to the screen so I clicked on my desktop a few times. I didn't understand it was an objective tracker on the right side at first, until a chest opened and surprised me with the sound :D

This game looks great. I am not sure if scooping water does anything, i seemed to sink no matter how much i scoop.
I did the only right thing then and drank some rum :) Good job

This was hilarious.
Quick note though: I got a bit motion sick when the boat was swinging wayyy too much.
Trying to unlock that chest was a bit of a mess.
I loved it though. I want to see it bigger, with first-person multiplayer, I feel like it'd be a great party game.

The theme of the sea and piracy is very well implemented, I really liked it! Had a lot of fun. The only thing missing was the continuation of unusual ideas in the conditions of a sinking ship. BUT I LOVED IT, THANKS FOR IT!

This seems to work better than mine! Love the animation on the ship, its a fun game. Think a graphical icon like the one we used would work better than the press X to do action message.

Game looks really cute! I'm not really sure what the buckets are for, or what rum does exactly, since patching leaks can be done without either. But chilling on the deck while the ship sinks is an excellent way to spend the weekend, of course. Good job!

I like the atmosphere, the graphics and music are nice and the game is super polished and fun. It's impressive that you made this in 3 days. It would be cool to see more levels with more new mechanics if you continue to work on this in the future.

Good job, solid entry! Physics, sinking mechanic, and the way the boat starts rocking when you drink lots of rum were all cool. (though I do feel motion sick now) The way everything was put together was really well done, but the actually gameplay was a little on the grindy side, and it would nice for there to be indications oh how many times each thing needed to be done to complete the level. I believe there was a bit of a bug where the deck was a bit flooded and I picked up a bucket there was no way to put it down again and complete my drinking rum task. Also I guess it was a little mistake that the text said "Death comes to us all" when you are victorious. Great job though, well done!

The mechanics are very simple and facilitate fun, however I was a bit disoriented, perhaps with a clearer tutorial the gameplay would be improved. The graphics are very good and certainly improve the experience, with more polish work you can continue to develop a great game. well done!! xD

Very nice. I managed to unlock everything except the level 3 patch leaks goal.
I really like the ship designs, and I love the getting drunk effect. The physics seemed to give up on level 3 after a while though.
The third ship was a bit cramped, I would often get stuck on the stairs. Also the sails between the camera and the pirate were annoying.
Picking up a bucket when trying to drink was annoying, multiple action prompts on screen at once is confusing.
R for interact is an odd choice, a bit of a stretch from WASD. E, F or Space would have been better.

Very enjoyable indeed! The player controller went smoothly. I really felt (specially in Level 3) the lack of a sprint button. When the game started I thought the rum could make me walk faster for a couple of seconds, maybe this could be a good addition for a future iteration.

Great job! The atmosphere is very well achieved, I really enjoyed it. From level three onwards the sails get a bit annoying, unless it's a design intention to hide the leaks, I think you could raise them a bit.
It would be great if you continue it, I think it has good potential to add more things (sharks damage the ship or rum gives you a speed boost).

This was a very fun concept and I can imagine it being built out so much further. It would be very cool if it were team based and you were all trying to stop the ship from sinking.

I had some issues in the 3rd level with very low frame rates. Other than that it was fun!

Like someone mentioned previously, it would much improve the game if the mouse was locked to the game screen. I was continually fighting to bring my mouse back to control the camera.
when I went full screen the game did not react well, so that was not an option.. 4K monitor may have something to do with it.
I wonder what it would be like if the camera was simply locked behind the player (third person view)?

Other than that... a lot of elements to like... the graphics are great, the music and sounds very appropriate and keep you engaged. Running around patching leaks and drinking kept me busy enough not to be able to explore the other aspects too much. Bailing worked but fitting with the theme I could not keep up... lol.

The one other place I had difficulty with is that as the ship got deeper into the water I could not visually locate the leaks. Not sure how I kept missing them but maybe a better visual clue when the ship is low in the water.

Overall great game and great job.

The game is really good , but there are things need to be improved , the controls are very weird , I really can't move correctly , I think it's a bad idea to use mouse for moving the camera , maybe if you use arrow keys for moving the camera , it can be good , anyways , good works !
