A Ship Out of Time by deighta

[raw]
made by deighta for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Story: The year is 20X6 and our sun will go nova in 3 minutes.

You have an experimental time-warp engine that can save us if you can get it to our planet in time.

Use the engine during your flight to jump back in time to delay the inevitable. Time-warp to avoid danger and boost your pilots' skills.

Beware! The time-warp drive is unstable and can explode on its own.
Alarms will sound when things are getting critical, but you won't make it to the planet if you play it safe.

Controls:

Left Mouse/Touch: Move 'W' key/tap 'Warp' button: Time-warp your ship 'Esc' key: Pause

All Pilots spawn with random stats. Things means that they might move slowly at first, or hit hard right from the start. Be sure to boost their stats with XP before they run... out of time!

Interesting gameplay. I like the music.

The generated pilot names and icons are adorable! Great idea to help explain that each pilot is a unique play every time you time/replay

The upgrade system is quite cool, one suggestion would be to telegraph where the enemies are going to come through just before they do, so you don't die unexpectedly. The music and art are awesome :D

It's a solid concept and story, with good art and sound. But the ship moves very sluggishly, it's get into it.

Pilot change mechanic is very good loved it maybe lateral movement speed can be increased.

@graphite @ben-newington @alpqty The move speed is intentionally slow, as we liked the thought of needing to have the player need to balance their ship upgrades. Another thing is that all of the pilots spawn with random stats. Also, thanks so much for the feedback!

Really well polished ... I liked the look and feel. Responsiveness of the ship was maybe a little slow, but then again very direct. Maybe I would have preferred keyboard input - but minor issue
Fun fact: I actually have a project where I used the exact graphics of the pilots.
Good job :thumbsup_tone1:

I think the session length might be a bit too long for my tastes. When you're using an unupgraded ship, getting through 3 minutes feels VERY long. Especially when enemies can spawn alongside you and one shot kill you before you can react. I sadly gave up after four attempts. I think if the gameplay loop was shorter and i got to upgrades faster I'd have enjoyed it more.

Looks good, ship movement is very sluggish.. but still not a bad submission by any means

Fun gameplay. I had two issues and I think they're related (as in, I think solving one would solve the other). Sometimes the enemies would come in unexpectedly where I was or (worse) in a place where it was basically impossible for me to live (if they came fairly low and I got below them and the next set happened to come from the bottom I was screwed). This was especially frustrating early on when you couldn't really dodge. Either limiting their spawns (preventing some of those "auto-kill" moments), especially early on, or telegraphing where they were coming from so I could get out of the way would have helped a LOT.

Otherwise fun, though, and I came back for more a few times, so obviously the frustration at automatic deaths didn't hurt the overall fun too much.

The game is really clever, I really love the mechanic and the mix of bullet hell and rougelike.

I noticed if I repeatedly press W, the wrap charge fills up faster. Is it a bug or an unexplained technique?

People have mentioned the frustration at the automatic deaths and the slow initial move speed, and I'm 100% with them. However, that pushed me to upgrade the speed asap and to find safe spots. On the other hand, I found no incentives to upgrade the weapon damage, which I cannot say if this is a good or bad thing.

(p.s. If the "end" at 00:00.889 is intended to fit the theme, I must say I'm a bit annoyed. But then again, I did somewhat similar things in my game )

Good job!

I think that the ship is a bit slow though. :rocket:

I loved the mechanics of the pilots, but some are very slow, and we can't move properly. Maybe I would leave the movement in wasd or even without the need for a mouse click, to make it a little easier. The design of the backgrounds, ships and the effects on the home screen caught my attention, they are very good! Congratulations, it's a great project!

Fun game!

As others have mentioned. with a small play area. it's difficult to not get blind-sided by ships on the left or right.

Very cool game, I like the intro story and that the ship shoots automatically (I would have it pressed down the whole time anyway), i'm not too keen on the mouse controls I would probably prefer it to be keyboard and little bit faster, because with the time warp taking some time it's really hard. But overall very nice game, well done.

It looked very good on the title screen, but I couldn't play it very well. Controls and movement could be better handled.

Moving with the mouse in a top-down shooter like this is super awkward... I think using the standard WASD movement, or arrow keys, would have served a lot better here. It is good that the ship auto-shoots, since there's no reason to not be shooting. The difficulty definitely felt unfair, in part due to enemies spawning on the left and can instantly kill you, and the boss just spawning and instantly killing.

A good little game! I reach the end (the timer reach 0) but nothing happen, I think you didn't have the time to make it, so no problem, the rest of the game stay good! The final is quite absurd but I think that how shm'up get good!

I still had some problem like a lot of "first shmup game" have, like a hitbox far too big, no reason to not stay on the bottom of the screen, no indicator of where the ennemy will come (it's not that bad, but when the screen is so small and the hitbox so large, it's quite a problem), etc. But it still make a good game, like, being able to restart the run but better prepare is fun, while also having the risk to lost it all : this is a good feeling , showing by gameplay! And that's great!

It feels nostalgic when I played this game. Aside from the RNG stats of the pilot, nice game overall.

Should be a bit more polished. After gathering a few upgrades I blast the enemies away, but the ships from the side always kill me. It feels like it's based on luck, not skill.

This was a really neat jam game with perfect scope. I feel like the early game was let down by the ships initial speed, there was a few times when I couldn't move the ship out of the way of the initial enemy wave and died straight away before I could warp or move out the way. Otherwise this was fun, good job.
