Wickfall by OriginalDog
This is my first Ludum Dare entry!
Your goal is to gather wax in the mines whilst the candle still burns bright, using it as a resource to build defences on the surface.
If I had the time, I would have added more enemy and tower variety (along with music and sound effects). Maybe in the future though!
Controls
- Move with WASD or the arrow keys, jump with the space bar/up arrow
- Mine the yellow wax veins in range of your lantern by holding LMD
- Build by pressing B and using the number buttons or scroll wheel to select a tower, place along the surface

The lighting really gives a great atmosphere and the mining etc. feels good.
So, well done.
I think it would be nice if you could always see the castle. maybe in a small window on the top right.
I kept going down to mine wax and suddenly I lost... I did not see it coming and that felt weird.
However it was still a fun challenge for me so I tried it a few times.
I survived 5 minutes.
It might also be interesting to add some time goals with rewards. So after surviving for 5 min you get 200 wax or something.
At 4:30 it just felt hopeless.
I think enemy and tower variety are not super important tbh.
I only got to build one cannon and I still think it might have been better to go for wall + tower...
So of course you can try to balance this but I think by adding more you would just waste your effort on something that no player will ever use/see.
For anyone except the author reading this:
This game is nice so if you are trying to find something to play and rate, this is it. ;)
Nice grapchis and fun gameplay, could be fun if expanded upon as it seems the difficulty level stops after a while!
Good job!
I felt like it was a bit too easy, I didn't really had to think of any layout for my towers or strength/weakness of the enemies, but it's still impressive to be able to do this kind of mechanic! Good job
If you wanted to expand it, adding in a day-night cycle and the ability to get items that let you venture into previously closed parts of the mine would be cool. E.g a pick to remove bolders. Could even put some story into some hidden parts.
I would look into how you could make snapping onto the ladders more forgiving for the player, rather than requiring them to line up perfectly. Unless you want that to be a mechanic of the game
