TOOB by Gatlink

[raw]
made by Gatlink for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Go as fast as you can and try to collect bonuses while avoiding any obstacle. Going at full speed grants you more point, but will you take the risk or try to delay as much as possible what we all know is inevitable: the crash!

Controls

Keyboard

  • W / Z / Up: accelerate
  • S / Down: brake
  • AD / QD / Left and Right: steer

XBox Gamepad

  • RT / A: accelerate
  • LT / B: brake
  • Left stick: steer left and right

You might experience light freezes when the race starts, don't worry they disappear pretty fast. We were not able to fix them in the time we had left, sorry about that.

This is visually amazing. The movement feels so smooth -- it's just very satisfying. It's pretty difficult but it's not super frustrating. Very very pretty and fun game.

It's a tried concept, but you nailed it, both the aestetics and the controls. Music is good too. Nice shaders. Very well executed!

Wow that looks amazing! I played it with a controller, and had the feeling it was pretty easy.

Maybe if the game sped up or the wheels started spinning after a while it would be harder?

Well executed ! Nice work on the ship and environment, and the controls are flawless.

I'm wondering if there are any downsides to braking all the time if you want to achieve a high score ? That looks like a way to cheese the game.

@yorsh Thanks for your comment! You gain more points by going further than you get by staying alive a long time. Also, points for distance and bonuses are doubled if you are going at full speed. Lastly I would say that going fast is more fun :P

This game is incredible!

I really like the concept, the graphics and the sound design.
It feels very good to control the ship, and it's really fun to master it.
The level design is great. Maybe sometimes it gets a little harder than one should expect.
Also, the BGM does a very good job building up the hype and adrenaline.

The graphic style you used looks amazing, and I really would like to buy and play a full version of this game.

Awesome work!

@milan8890 damn, I though I had eradicated that bug for good! Thanks for you nice comment, I hope that crash didn't take too much of your enjoyment. Fun fact: at some point you could drive though the tunnel and end up driving ON it instead of inside of it :D If we had more time we would have made an alternative map were you drive outside.

This game is far, far too hard for me to play for any length of time - but my god it's gorgeous. I think it might be the prettiest game I've seen in a few months - just in general.

I'm going to keep trying, I get the feeling there may be a skill barrier that once you overcome - the game opens up for you.

Really good looking and generally very well polished game. The controls feels really smooth and the movement looks really good even though it was quite hard to control the ship. Really good job, by far the most impressive game I have played so far in the jam :)

Fantastic graphics!

Do you increase the difficulty from time to time? I can't feel that while playing, and I can play infinitely :)

A very well executed game, the aesthetics a joy to watch. You sure know your shaders. Good action and speed. The pumping music definitely gets the adrenaline going. The F-Zero/WipeOut gameplay nailed!

Good and polished submission, Enjoy the neon/fzero style. Art and Music really fitting. Feel like you could space out the distance between obstacles a bit or mess with what you already have and it would work great. Ship just feels a bit slippery at high speeds since its not locked to left and right. All in all though this is a great game you guys should feel proud <3

Godot user o/! Cool game ! But "quick reload" need to be default option and more seen. Elbows are a good idea but hide the visibility

Really liked the game, really polished I think there needs to be a penalty for just holding the break the whole time

The music is great and the visuals are absolutely stunning - the shaders in particular are beautiful. The physics are super satisfying and I love the feel of the ship. Good job on the level generation too, the obstacles never felt unavoidable and every loss felt like it was just my fault for trying to go too fast. I think a great next step would be to step up the variation in the obstacles, some more dynamic/timing based ones in particular would add a lot I think. Amazing job!

Well presented, looks great. I love the title screen effects.
The controls took a while to get used to, they seemed a bit erratic at first, perhaps due to the camera motion.
I was going to suggest the menu should be keyboard controlled, but then I saw the R to restart option. Not ideal but at least it was there. Faster restart times would have been nice since it happens a lot.

Good polish, I liked the bits of text you but on some of the obstacles that gave the game character. As for feedback: I think the pickup audio didn't suit rest of the game style. Also I feel the theme wasn't very strong for me, it was just that it gets harder over time. You chose good music to use in the game. The visuals are clean!

@jesse-martin True! We talked about the difficulty of the game, for some it's too hard, for others it's too easy haha.

But yes, not being able to brake infinitely is a good idea.

@theludovyc Hey! Yep Godot is nice, Gatlink had already used it a bit but it was my first time. :D

By "Elbows" you mean tight turns? That's something I wanted to refine but, you know, lack of time haha.

And the impression of angle changes a lot if you take the outside of the turn instead of the inside.
FoG Ryu
06. Apr 2022 · 07:26 UTC
@honest-dan Yes I agree. I wanted something else for the pickup sound, but no SD on the team :p.

And I agree for the theme, it's here, we could strengthen it. We had some ideas to do it, but didn't have time to implement them. We chose to make the game functional and clean rather than adding options at the end in a rush.

Thanks for the feedbacks!

@someone The menus can be controlled via keyboard, just press up or down and the first button will be focused. It works with the gamepad too, push the left stick or the d-pad up or down and similarly you will be able to navigate the menus with those inputs.

@jesse-martin The penalty for braking all the time is that you gain way more points by going further than surviving longer. Also, points awarded by distance or bonuses are doubled when you are at full speed. Unfortunately we couldn't communicate this clearly to the players (the only thing we managed to implement was different sfx when you grab a bonus at full speed, clearly that was not enough.)

Thank you both for playing the game!

Fun game. Very full featured for the time limit, and the visual style comes together very well. It doesn't seem to get faster as time goes on, I think ramping difficulty would round out the game well.

@Gatlink Just tried again and the menus worked with up/down keys, though they stopped working again after a while so it looks like it was a bug. I tried a third time but couldn't reproduce it again. Also the controls list W as break.

Really fun game. It gave me some nostalgia for old scifi racers. The art style was extremely well executed and consistent, I dug it for sure. Your menu is amazing- background, layout, font choice, etc. just super well put together. Constructive feedback: dying in one hit felt really punishing, I wanted to keep going without restarting. Maybe a health bar would have been more forgiving =P. Otherwise, great entry!

Graphics look great! Happy to see some nice looking Godot games. I wasn't really sure if there was a point to going fast. Seemed the best strategy was to go super slow so you can go as far as possible without crashing. I did have a problem with it going full screen on the wrong monitor, though. This is a problem I've worked around by maximizing the window first before going fullscreen. Running the game with --maximized on the command line fixed it.

This game I liked the visual graphics and controls, but it was hard to control the ship, it is very fast. But because of the high speed, it immediately became clear that you were sticking to the topic. Well done).

As Jitspoe pointed out the gameplay did seem to beg you to go slow hehe. Maybe if the speed ramped up over time? Visually very nice, and I love love LOVE the start and game over screen, with the smoke shader. OOH. So nice.

Really nice! The volume sliders and quick-restart key are immediate +++ points for me. The music is great but gets repetitive pretty quickly (because of dying lots to start with, and then just because it loops). I wasn't sure if the objective was supposed to be to go fast and get as far as possible as fast as possible, or just to get as far as possible (which for me, involved going pretty slow)

Wow, you've nailed it with this one. Very polished, movement feels nice and smooth, audio is great (and a volume slider ), decent end game screen so you can compare against your best times and with friends, just the right amount of frustration and quick jump-back-in that you want to keep going and going again.

Amazing work!

In the end I managed to score 2:46.86, 778 points :D

Awesome style and execution! To avoid repeating what others have said, here are two observations of mine:

Perhaps having a camera that points down the "TOOB" would help a bit with avoiding deaths to obstacles while performing tight turns.

Also, turning left and right on the XboxOne gamepad is odd as it stops reading your input as a turn when you push the stick too high or low on the y-axis - I'd just leave the triggers for accel/brake and give the stick better range of motion.

Great entry and nice work!

Love this entry! Reminds me a bit of the old Wipeout games. Incredible graphics and polish. I found the game quite difficult -- perhaps obstacles could be spaced out more or could be made to take up less space in the tube. Overall a fantastic submission, guys! Nice work. :)

Very nice game!

The art, the navigation in menus, the controls, everything is so smooth and polished ✨
I found the game a bit too easy and repetitive without always accelerating, so I challenged myself to never drop the right trigger. This is my best score on 1.2 at max speed!

Super cool game! Nice and simple to play, but I feel like I could really invest some time to master it.

I did find it a little frustrating that some of the obstacles would come VERY quickly around a curve, and the camera was so zoomed in I would have very little time to react, even if I was slowing down.

Other than that, though, I had a lot of fun with this one!
