3rd Emu australian war simulator by sebbernery

[raw]
made by sebbernery for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

Emu are coming. They defeated us two times, and now, they attack, we have no chance.

You are our only hope, here is our last military equipment : a french artillery named CESAR, because I heard Australian army loves buying french weapons. artillerie_complete1.png It literally is the acronym for So This Is A Truck And We Put A FUCKING Big Canon On It (but in french) (and the acronym is also a surname because french do that, like always, don't ask).

Please stand the longer possible so we can evacuate our island.

How to play: * You can move with LEFT and RIGHT * You can orient the canon with UP and DOWN * You can shoot a missile with SPACE (keep pressed to charge your shoot)

Emu came from right. Don't go too much at right because you'll see the spawn point of Emu (DOH, I exploded the fourth wall).

Your score is the number of seconds you stay alive (your life is in the left bottom). After something like 30s it already become totally fucked up, so it take less than 1 minute to finish.

The game was made with : * Rust and Bevy * Aseprite * Ldtk * Audacity

My top score was around 45 seconds, which for something as deadly as the emu war is a pretty good run.

Charging the gun was unsatisfying, since the shells always fired waaaaaaaaay off screen, and didn't seem to offer any additional attach power. As it is the best strat is drive backwards spamming space.

I didn't even realize the gun could be angled, until I looked at the screen shots here. Although angling the gun still doesn't help much with the charge shots.

It needs a lot of polish.

Took me a while to find a good strategy. I call it the West-Australian lawn mower!

It could use some balancing. Make the game less hard, and cheese like this less good. My game has similar issues so who am i to judge!

Anyway, well done!

Made it to 52 seconds!

I love the art, especially the explosion animation. I also thing the visual/audio feedback on the emus charging is really good!

The gameplay is pretty unforgiving considering how hard it is to accurately measure a shot. The best strategy is to just spam space bar with the gun angled low enough that you create a kill-zone in front of the truck. I think a prediction line or something would make it much more rewarding, but obviously that's easier said than done.

Overall, I liked the whacky setting and art/sound :)

57 seconds! Longer than the AUS army! \o/

Same lawn mower strat as p0l4r, but with an authentic simultaneous retreat :)

Love the wackiness of the premise. Made me wonder if animals have thwarted carefully planned military maneuvers in real life! :-)

Hahaha love the idea, the emu war is one of my favourite historical events.
I think since you have a fixed spawn point, you should probably make it so you can't move past a certain point, as that breaks the game, I could just run through the emus and essentially stay safe forever.

Good job!

5/5 for humor. I especially loved 'sorry for what you saw' :D. Unfortunately the gameplay is lacking a bit. The best tactic seems to be to spam spacebar because charging the shot to hit emus when they are far away is hard and also aggrivates nearby emus which then charge you. A trajectory indicator for the charged shots would go a long way.

Hard to master the power of the canon but when you do the game become quite fun!
Music is really cool. The emu are so cute,I'm feeling sorry for them
Good job.

I drive past the spawn point and off the road into the abyss, and didn't mind it at all.
Good game, funny concept, nice quick responsive gameplay.

Never has spawn-camping been so effective of a strategy!

Haha! Love the music. I feel as though my main suggestion for how to improve this would be to double-check your spelling and grammar, but at the same time I did get a laugh out of "Sorry for what you saw" and I feel as though those slip-ups in the writing sort of contribute to the overall style of the thing, which is perhaps its greatest charm. I actually didn't mind the difficulty: sure, beyond 30 seconds it gets a little ridiculous, but you get a complete experience in that time and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Nice work!

I really like the build up for the game, but it was exceedingly hard to aim and hit the emu because either the bullet hit the truck itself or it flew out of screen. Kind of wondering if the calculations there didn't take variance in performance of different computers into account (i.e. use real time passed to calculate the power) so while I managed to hit some emus a couple of times I only once by pure luck managed to hit the same enraged emu a second time. Which meant that the absolute best strategy I could come up with was backing up to the far left and never firing the gun. And while this might have been a funny major point of the game's critique of french weapons and Australian-French relations, it seemed a bit obscure to have been intended.
