Giraffe o'Clock by Kepsert

[raw]
made by Kepsert for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Have you been looking for, no have you been CRAVING for a gameboy-inspired, full of chiptune bangers, story-rich, dialogue-heavy, game about a baby giraffe, afraid of the dark, who goes on a massive journey to transcend space and time in order to manipulate time so it'll never turn dark?

You're not going to believe it!

Then I have THE game for you! (More about the plot underneath the dancing giraffe)

Webbuild is a post-jam build BUT the game will tell you when the post-jam part starts. Otherwise you could download the 0.2.5 version. Controller/Keyboard controls are both supported. RECOMMENDED to play on easy difficulty if you want to experience the full game - the difficulties have not been balanced properly, but easy has been buffed up for LD reasons!

Good luck, and ENJOY!

GiraffeDance.gif

Brother Billy is about to turn off the lights; it's bedtime after all. It just so happens to be that Kid Giraffe is scared of the dark and he's not quite ready for the lights to go off yet. Logically he goes on an adventure to delay, or perhaps completely evade, the inevitable. Meet a cast of characters through a jolly world of witty dialogue, adorable graphics, while transcending space and time in the one way that makes sense: through dance.

The sprite work is super cute, particularly when you hold onto a ledge! The music is jamming and the dialogue is quite funny, makes for an endearing adventure. Level design is really good too, I like how you played with the ledge grabbing and how the levels compliment the solid controls and movement. Love this game.

this is honestly one of the best games in here so far, the art style, music, consept. even the dialogues game me quite the laugh, I really love this game. I could be wrong but weren't you the guy who said before the jam that no matter what the theme is you'll make a giraffe game ? if it was you then Damn I really didn't expect it to be this good.. all in all you did an awesome work and you should give yourself(s) a pat on the back!!

Loved the game! The art is beautiful, the music's catchy, the dialogue is great, and the platforming mechanics are super fun! I got real celeste vibes from the later levels with the dash, ledge hang, and mid-air jumps which is a very good thing. The rhythm minigame caught me super off guard in a great way. Great job!

Amazing game! Well worth the hype. Surprisingly polished for a gamejam entry. Normally I don't really like this much dialog, but it was done so well and tongue-in-cheek that I loved it. The level flow and such was great, and the controls felt very solid.

As a fellow musician I have to convey my compliments to the chef - the music was amazing

In fact, at some point I almost started feeling like an 8 year old with my NES again. Well done!

I got stuck in the wall btw. Was trying to jump and grab a ledge, got stuck and pushed left and then I could only go down.

Cute art style and great music and soundeffects. At first I thought it's a little bit too much text but it was funny enough for me to still enjoy it. The mini game was unexpected. I'm really bad at rhythm games

Also got stuck once while dashing:

Ok, so I see I'm not the only one who got stuck in the walls. Here's my screenshot:

![girrafe bug.png](///raw/05e/81/z/4c985.png)

It happened to me some time after I met Carl, so I don't really feel like going through everything before that again, especially since a very big part of the game is trivial. I'll come back to the game some other day to see what's left. I really liked the art, music and humor, great dialogues there. It's a relaxing game. One tricky part was when I had to perform double jump from hanging onto the ledge when there was no space for a single jump straight up. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong and what I eventually did right. But yeah, overall it was a cool experience :)

Such a nice atmosphere, great visuals, cute music, and like 3 hours of playtime?! I don't know how you managed to make this many distinct mechanics and polished levels!

Also, I've been told to rate the game highly in the humor category, so here I am...

This is an amazing entry, definitely my favourite so far. It's funny, has great art, awesome music and SFX, the platforming feels great and the chin ledge grab is a nice little twist to give it some uniqueness. I couldn't quite finish the level where you meet Carl. I got stuck at the point where she is shooting stars at you, and I'm pretty sure you needed to go from a ledge grab and do a double jump to get round the ledge, but that wasn't possible. There was loads of content though, it was amazing, and you really flexed by having a minigame within your jam game. The rhythm game was too difficult for me to hit many notes, but I still had plenty of time on the clock, and the difficulty of the platforming generally was perfect.

05. Apr 2022 · 15:52 UTC
@weirdybeardyman Thank you for the comment! Much appreciated! For the Carl level, hanging doesn't regain your dash/jumps, I might look into a way to make this clearer though! Either way, all obstacles on these levels are made to require a specific single/double/dash/ledge jump order to get through the platforming sections :D I tried to not reuse the same order in a single level. If you ever go back to it, I hope you'll be able to figure it out! You were so close to beating it :D

hehe i'm giraffe o'clock :) I really like your game. Cool platforming and the idea of the giraffe hanging from the jaw is funny and cute. The graphics are very nice as the whole feel of the game. Especially the beginning had some hilarious dialogue! I've enjoyed playing a lot and i had a smile through the whole run. Really great work guys! All the best :)

Hey, I never thought there'd be another game with a giraffe and a clock in it! Check ours out if you want - very different, but we've got a giraffe and a clock! Nicely done, cute and funny dialogue. I was very confused at first not being able to click the buttons to start - finally figured out to use the arrow keys - I think being able to to click them will be much better.

Awesome! The humor upvote is yours my friend, I had lots of fun playing your submission :-) The dialog is so cheesy, love it!

The color palette is great, it reminds me of some alternative reality where gameboys would have purple screens instead of green haha

The controls are nicely done, first I thought the jump was a bit floaty, but after playing for a while it actually makes sense

Music is well done too, not too repetitive and not too destracting

Thanks for making this game, really appreciate it, it is a very nice game, the levels are very very very very well designed, just a minor "annoyance" would be the blind jumps that feel a bit unfair as you don't know where to go, but that's actually surpassable with pure and unbridled platformer experience ! Really love the mechanics, the controls are buttery smooth and the ledge "biting" is insanely cute ! WELL DONE !!!!

LDJam user 251170
05. Apr 2022 · 22:26 UTC
@learus To put it easy; I've been joking about making a giraffe game since LD48 and as a meme I posted on the LD feed, before the event began, that I would make a giraffe game no matter what the theme would be. Fast forward to 3am my time Saturday morning as the event begun. Barely awake, on just a can of energy drink, and that's as far as my answer goes. I don't quite remember how this happened. :D

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'll be dropping additional content as post-jam stuff over the next weeks, levels, music, and mechanics mostly. Just thought I'd let you know in case you're hyped to have more content!

What an incredible entry, the dialogue is the best I've seen in the entire Jam. I was laughing the entire time. The game is oozing with so much charm its like a waterfall. Its incredible what you were able to accomplish in just 72 hours. The rhythm segment was an unexpected twist and it helped to vary up the gameplay. I hope you make this a full game in the future.

Dialogue, music and art are top notch.
The gameplay is good, but the controller could maybe be tighter as it feels a bit floaty but doesn't detract too much from the experience.
Great entry and good luck!

Reaaaaally good entry!

(I played the jam version so I'd be fair when rating)
I do feel like the dialogue was a bit wordy and it would of been nice for an option to have it repeat as I got stuck not knowing where to go after the rhythm section. Speaking of I feel like the difficulty was only applied to that section as the platforming enemies wasn't challenging to me

The music and art was great, well put together and I liked how yous had multiple things going on with the music section, good job! ^-^

Really well done! best one i've played so far!

Funny dialog and nice platforming! I liked the ledge grab animation, but it felt a bit janky sometimes when trying to jump from holding ledge. Also i got an issue with the dash, i could not dash anymore unless i tabbed away and back in, then i got one dash by pressing a direction :P

Anyway, really well done! Keep it up!

I think I am soft locked! I can't move past this sequence since the robot is too scared to unbox itself!
That's unfortunate. I really want to see how it ends.
I'm truly impressed with the amount of gameplay, graphics, story and dialogue you created in such a short time.
And humour, ofc it's gonna be 5/5.
Well done!
LDJam user 251170
06. Apr 2022 · 20:32 UTC
@ocwal Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying it!

If you're interested in moving on (you totally should, the 3rd world has a banger of a soundtrack!) you could always just go back to the actual main menu, and then "Continue Game" :D Unfortunately, I forgot that the escape button in webplayer would minimize it so the options screen won't open on the webplayer - you should be able to refresh however, save files should still be working!
Then, if you get in this situation again; you can still get back to the lowest floating platform to the left, just a short jump into a dash and you'll be there :D Good luck!
Also, thank you for playing <3

I feel like I missed a powerup dialogue, OR i'm just really bad at platforming...

- It kept opening up the pause screen between levels, not sure if that was intentional?

- After "I'll just stop talking so the timer starts moving, bye!" I couldn't move, but I heard the dialogue sounds still going, so I kept hitting space until it let me move, which is why I think I might have missed something. ![chrome_FUWhZ2AoSw.png](///raw/0af/e1/z/4d379.png)

- This was where I gave up. I can't double jump after ledge biting so how???
![chrome_kG5jIXKTlB.png](///raw/0af/e1/z/4d37a.png)

Otherwise, fun little game, some of the dialogue felt a little forced but other jokes did land well and made me laugh. Terrible at the dancing minigame, glad I didn't have to do that again before I gave up on the platforming. Kinda sad I'm not skilled enough (or otherwise missed the dialogue that I needed) to get to the end, but glad I got to play the "Giraffe Game From That Guy Who Kept Posting About Giraffes", as I liked to think of it!
Also, I got a major Mario vibe from the music, it was great.
LDJam user 251170
06. Apr 2022 · 21:59 UTC
@papabirb I'm so glad you got to play it! :D For the part where you got stuck; ledge hang doesn't refresh double jumps/dash, it's more of a wall-hang than anything else. The trick is to jump once from the right side, dash into the ledge grab and then you'll still have your ledge jump AND your air-jump left :D

As for the pause problem, I haven't seen nor heard this one before! I see you were playing the web version, what browser did you use? :o

06. Apr 2022 · 22:32 UTC
Spedrun the game in like idk 13-15minutes! Great level design, absolutely nailed the music and soundtrack because I don't think any object or enemy in the game is missing any sound except the timer (caught you). I haven't ran into any bugs whatsoever so that's polished game in a ludum 72 hour jam, kudos! Lots of great humour thrown around in the dialogues, especially to do with modern zoomer cultures. The best thing about this game is that bugs can be a "feature" to help you speed run a game! But great work for a 72 hour jam, looking forward to the next one.

@kepsert I'm on Chrome (Version 99.0.4844.84 (Official Build) (64-bit) according to the 'about chrome' button).

Admittedly, I DID keep clicking out of the game to check on some chat messages, but this kept happening after I already came back in to the game to do the platforming. I don't know, maybe my mouse was clicking without my permission outside of the game? Might just be a me thing, lol.

I swear I tried what you said, I guess I'm just so uncoordinated that I ran out of air jumps anyway?? Maybe later I'll give it another try and see if I can get to the end without any weird pause bugs /phantom dialogue problems, lol.

Music hits the mood 100%. Giraffe is a character. All of the characters actually had character. Very good aesthetic you have going. I don't like the floaty jump but it works I guess. Also I think it would help if you split the text up a little into smaller bits to make reading it more manageable. Thanks for the game!

I know about your game from the Stream :) (The dude seriously kinda misrepresented it, after having played it myself ^^°)

TRULY AMAZING!! WOW!! Can't believe what you guys managed to do for that you were only two people?!

This is like a fully fledged game!!

Where to begin... Artstyle, Story, Music, all fantastic. Really loved the pink monochrome theme!
Unicorn who? pfff... Giraffes obviously are the next big thing! :id:

(and I loved that you even said it in the game yourself ^^ I also really loved the meta humor!)

In general it was very funny and not a lot of things make me laugh :b

the levels were amazingly detailed and SO. MUCH. CONTENT. The animations!!! Wow.

I hope you guys to to Steam with this, seriously. so cute. And wholesome. A bit Undertale vibes :)

But duuuuuude. The Dance Dance Revolution bit. Duuuuude xD Too hard to start out with :b

I will definitely return to my save file!!

I honestly don't know one bad thing to say. If I had to say something.. maybe incorporate the controls a bit in like a tutorial? But even that was easy to find out while playing (and Gamejams and tutorials, ain't nobody got time for that, lol)

Oh, also! The game mechanic! Sooooo unique and fun, omg! Honestly, this might be my favourite this Jam!

Cool Game!

The mouth grab is very amusing and I appreciated some DDR mix up in there to keep things fresh. I think the sheer density of text is a bit much for my personal taste but that's subjective. I did enjoy the text, I just thought you overdid it per level, I think like.. half as much text would've been very enjoyable, because it was well written.

@alexrose Thank you! ♡ The original plan was to have 3-4 levels for each dialogue but time constraints :( Glad you did still enjoy it though!!
alexrose
07. Apr 2022 · 13:29 UTC
I'm glad you didn't do 3-4 levels for each dialogue actually, haha, it was just the right length where the mechanics were explored to their extreme without it becoming brutally unfair or boringly retreading old soil
LDJam user 251170
07. Apr 2022 · 13:37 UTC
@alexrose Haha that's true but that would imply we didn't have a bunch of extra mechanics we wanted to put in there :D I HAD SO MUCH PLANS (moving (ledge bite) platforms, keys, buttons, conveyor belts, more enemies, portals, bouncy pads, jump refreshers, time rewind, the list goes in haha) but that's part of the challenge, setting the right scope :D

Beat it! Absolutely loved this one, one of the longest game jam games I've played. Hilarious dialogue, fun minigame, and smooth mechanics. I especially thought the enemy robot mechanic was really clever. The only issue I had was some inconsistency with being able to use my double jump after hanging onto a wall, but overall this was an amazing experience. Good luck on turning it into a full release, I'll keep my eyes out for it!

Really good game, I loved the music, it was very on point and well done and the graphics were really good with a great palette as well, and the dialogue was fun! It's amazing how much you've managed to make, the game was quite a bit longer than I expected! And quite hard sometimes haha, I played on medium and still had a hard time with the music sections (which are really cool and well made though!) Perhaps they are a bit to hard though, it didn't feel like a "medium/standard" difficulty, but rather hard, especially when the game expect you to hit notes with many different buttons close in a row (2 at a fast pace is fine for medium, three or more very fast after each other can be a bit too much imo.)

I hope you continue working on it, and if you do I would recommend you to use the pixel perfect camera plugin as I think this was made in unity? It makes the pixel art look even better without seams (I notice some things jitter a bit in sub-pixels) and the giraffe floats a pixel or two above ground.

All in all, this is a great entry, really well done!

I mean we already talked so much about this game on streams so now it only feels like I'm adding this comment for karma lol.
Well, great graphics with a tasty color palette. I appreciate all the jokes and fun in the dialogues, I'd still prioritize balancing the minigame difficulty over the dialogues. The levels are cleanly designed. One or two sections felt like you needed closer checkpoints or something.( Only because it's a jam game btw, you expect to waste less time so you can move on to playing other games )

We love this game. Keep up the good work!

A ton of fun from start to end! Visuals, music, humor all is there! The dialog is what makes the experience so nice of course. And the fact that you were able to make so much great dialog, multiple levels, ability progression and polish it all so well in 3 days with a team of 2 is just amazing!

I cannot state this enough: **THIS MUSIC IS _WONDERFUL!!!_** This is seriously GOOD MUSIC! The graphics, on the other hand, is quite humble. These graphics are nice and charming; though it's not exactly the most original style.

The levels are shockingly well-constructed! Many times I thought I'd made a mistake, only to find out that's where the game wants me to go! There's plenty of levels too, which definitely earns my respect. There were some tricky parts, but they were always manageable with the right approach. Though the dancing minigames are rather demanding in reflexes.

Now, I know for *certain* that this will be an unpopular opinion, but I do **NOT** enjoy the writing in this game.

Don't get me wrong, I do like me some self-awareness, but there's a limit for how self aware a work should be, and this game *just take is too far.*. Yes, I'm aware of the theme of Ludum Dare 50, don't beat me over the head with it! No, even taking the self-awareness into account, you're not clever for referencing the theme! Nearly everyone's done that! I wasn't a fan of the 'boomer' jokes later on either; all that's gonna do is make me groan.

And listen, *if you actively __TELL ME__ to rate your game high in the humor category, __NO!__* Don't make people rate a game, even IF you think it deserves it. Ultimately, this just comes off as an *extremely* low attempt at garnering ratings, and I honestly do not want to give it a high humor score.

Ok, now ALL of that was just **MY** personal opinion! Remember that, I implore you! Because apart from the writing, this game is **_REALLY GOOD!_** The graphics are charming, the music is **WONDERFUL,** and the gameplay is amazing, maybe with the exception of the dancing sequences. You all should be VERY proud, apart from *begging for high humor ratings.*

Apologies if my writing opinions are rather harsh; I just simply _cannot **STAND**_ stuff like that. Just have a great day, all of you; I don't wish ill on you all.

Really nice game! The presentation is very polished, the graphics have great cohesive aesthetics and the music rocks and keeps the game active. I also enjoyed the introduction and progression of the game that came together with a story. Not so fun of trying to squeeze so much humor, but I do appreciate games with personality in the story. For being a jam game, it's impressive the amount of content that is presented in a story-driven way. I also felt the levels are very well designed, making great use of the mechanics, with the right level of difficulty, challenge, but not too frustrating. I wish perhaps that there was some visual indicator of when you still have a double-jump available or not, since some levels rely on you saving them until necessary.
While the "medium" difficulty makes it not stressful about time, I appreciate that you can tweak the difficulty and play on an almost "non-lose" mode. Congratulations on the game!

Fantastic visuals and insanely self aware. Only few problems I have are the dialogue, which was funny at first but it felt like every bit of dialogue was 4th wall breaking to some degree, and didn't feel very genuine until the end, and the game was a bit too easy imo, even on the harder difficulties. Overall, this is one of the best games i've played this jam, and the team should be very proud.

Amazing well polished game! The difficulty increase between the levels felt very balanced and the later jumps were quite challenging. I'm looking forward for the commercial release to see what happens after that last dance

I played with controller except for the dance sections. The dance controls are just sooo much easier with a keyboard than with a controller.

Well done all around! I didn't get to mention this during our interview, but having seen the dialogue during another streamer's play-through, I feel like it could be edited down just a bit; there's a LOT of back-and-forth that could be spread into more conversations, especially if you're adding more levels to the game.

@agrimes Oops, sorry! The future patch will be adding a "YOU HAVE GAINED DASH" pop-up there, something you can't just skip :) But yea, you get a dash there (shift/alt or east button on gamepad). If you feel like giving it another go; it does auto save after each level!

That was a really nice and polished jam game! You made an awesome work here. I found the controls a little difficult, but that's just because I'm not really great at platformers. The dance minigames felt not perfect, imho there is not enough feedback if we manage or miss to hit the right buttons at the right time.

I found the level music a little repetitive, but it's ok, nothing horrible there. The music tracks are pretty good!

I had trouble finding wich button to press to dash, maybe you could add something in the dialog to explain how to perform it?

Overall, it is one of the best LD50 game I've played! You made a wonderful work on this one! Good luck, if you want to create a full/commercial version of it, I'm pretty sure this can work.

Incredible game! There's just so much in here. A huge amount of content, amazing graphics, excellent writing, a great and diverse soundtrack, and superb platforming! This is one of the best games I've played thus far. You deserve your 5* in humour :)

I only have a few minor nitpicks: it was a bit disorienting when the text moved to a new line in the middle of a word, and the spiders disappear into the ground a few pixels above it. Also, there was a bug int this specific ledge, where I couldn't jump (playing on 0.2.5 Windows):

Just packed with humor and great gameplay mechanics. By far the most difficult part was the rhythm game, lost probably half my time on that alone. I would honestly buy a fully fledged version of it, cause the whole package really works well. Hello Kepsert,

Amazing game! I loved the music, the gameplay was super fun and very rewarding. The only critique I have is some graphics. The text box being the same color as the bg threw me off a bit, also the boxes that you cant jump on should maybe be pushed back a bit /look separated from the main level. The idea is very cool, and the platforming controls feel nice, with coyote jump, buffer, and this special giraffe neck mechanic, very smart and well done!
The level design is most often quite good. The pixel art is awesome with a great color palette, but I would personally love it even more if it were pixel perfect.
The dialogues were way too long for my personal taste and not really my kind of humor, but it was great that you could just skip through them without losing any important info.

Really well put together game. The gameplay is fun and the level design is solid. Dialogue... is not great. It's too long, self-referential and relies too much on breaking the 4th wall. The humor does not feel very organic.

Forgot to send an actual feedback before 😅 I found the giraffe neck platforming very creative, and even though it may have been a bit excessive I do love some fourth wall breaking (and puns, like in the joke about the dog called Rolex). As I mentioned elsewhere the only problem I had is that the game didn't support my resolution on Windows (2560x1080) cutting the top and bottom of the screen.

When you admitted in the beginning that dialogue is basically filler, I just started skipping it. So probably not a good idea.
But the jumping and grabbing corners were fun enough and well made. Your platforming mechanics reminded me of "the end is nigh" a little bit. I also enjoyed the rhythm sections, at least when they matched the music. Overall, great job!
