The Saga of Thorbjorn Olafsson by kr0s

[raw]
made by kr0s for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Welcome to the world, where there is nowhere to run… That is, until you build a path. You are Thorbjorn Olafsson, a Viking in pursuit of your sweetheart, Helga, who has been kidnapped by the fire giant Surtr. You must reach the Yggdrasil to finish the level.

The gameplay is simple. You begin in the starting point. As soon as the level starts, Thorbjorn starts running. You must add the parts of the track to keep Thorbjorn running, until the finish line is reached. The choices are: a straight piece of track, a left turn, and a right turn. Use the following controls:

A - adds a left turn

W - adds a straight piece

D - adds a right turn

Space - jump

You can only add five track pieces ahead. That means, once you step on a track piece, you can add another piece as long as there are zero, one, or two pieces after the current one. This is a lot to read, but once you play the game, this will be very obvious.

There will be obstacles on the way, so you must build the track around them. There will also be obstacles on the track pieces; the pieces will be chosen randomly, and you won’t get to choose if you will get a piece with or without obstacles, because that wouldn’t be very fun now, would it? Anyway, you can jump over those. If Thorbjorn hits an obstacle, he dies. If he hits an existing track, he dies. If he hits an obstacle on the track, believe it or not, he dies.

I planned to add some more stuff in the environment, but ran out of time.

Tools used: Unreal Engine 4, Blender, Substance Painter

Also, I realized that the credits menu is broken. Credits are as follows:

Water shader: Stylized Nature pack from Unreal marketplace

Surtr animation: Mixamo

Neat concept and I really like the graphics. Though I think there are a couple of glitches that stopped my progress.

its cute and I like how it looks, and the concept is a good one. One problem i have is the camera is often too slow and doesn't keep up very well, so every time i turn it takes a moment too long for the camera to turn with and it often leads me to dying since I can't see where I'm going or what I need to try and dodge that way. However this is something I could see myself playing a whole lot if it was refined a little more!

Felt like a nice and imaginative take on runner games, jumping did feel a bit jank but it was overall very nice. Solid gamejam entry, well done!

great game, made me a bit addicted, graphics are awesome. Jumping felt a bit weird. would also be nice to have some feedback, in case you fall into a trap, like a death animation.

This is a really good entry. I managed to get stuck when the tiles created a circle tho haha

It took me several runs too fully understand how to play but once I figured out, I found this game very fun ! I really really liked the overall concept - controlling the environemnt, not the player - and it was challenging enough to keep me playing. Quick suggestion, I think that the "jump" is a little off, I died countless time because of a mis-calculated jump ^^
I spent a good time on your game, great job !

Temple Run in Viking. Good graphic though. Too many bugs.

I encountered quite a few bugs and glitches unfortunately, and I think you may have been better off sticking to one "area" than making three, but I liked the concept and the setpieces I did see were very pretty! Reminded me of Alt+F4.

The graphics are great and the concept is really smart. Instead of controlling the runner you control the track. really clever. There's quite a few bugs, but I feel like that can easily be ironed out. The primary game loop is fun and fast paced.

Unfortunately I ran into several bugs, I could only play the first stage and yet I couldn't do it very well since it was in an endless loop of turning to one side or it got stuck without being able to jump. Of all the art looks very beautiful and the music is great, I would like to see it more worked and polished to be able to enjoy it 100%. Thanks for your entry!

Cool concept, amazing graphics and entertaining gameplay. Needs some balancing on the different tiles since by doing left-right-left-right all the time you get no traps and go on forever. Also you can spam spacebar to constantly jump and avoid all the traps most of the time. Although if you spam spacebar while turning the character will drift outside the path, which is funny :)

Overall very good entry but needs some polish in the gameplay

I took me some time to understand how to play, at first, I thought there was a bug and the "track/path" was not loading. But we create our own path, and it's quite nice. There is something a little weird about the jumping gamefeel: some death feels quite unfair. I guess it's because of the lack of sound fx, it's difficult to remember the "timing" of the jump. A sound FX at the beginning and the end of the jump would help.

The idea is super nice, and it works well. Graphics are pretty cool too! I'm impressed you managed to create 3 different worlds. With some polish and balancing, it could be a nice little game. Good job!

Neat twist on the autorunner formula! I was a bit confused about the goal but after a couple of tries I could figure it out :D

Thank you all for your feedback, it is really helpful. I am glad that you like the idea. Now that the jam is over, I can focus on creating a post jam version with more polish and more content.

The game looked really cool. Was quite confused what was happening most of the time. Think it could of used some more polish. But overall great job! hope you had a fun jam:D

Love the graphics and music, I think having a death animation would have added a lot of character and feedback
