Rocket Rally by fueelin

[raw]
made by fueelin for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

Welcome to Rocket Rally, the game show you can't win! It doesn't matter how fast you can run, how high you can jump, or how good your aim is! Our obstacle course has never been beaten! You will fail, and our loyal viewers will be entertained!

Controls:

WASD - Move

Space - Jump

Arrow Keys - Aim

Left Ctrl - Shoot Rockets (For jumping, not killing things)

R - Restart Level

Made in MonoGame.

Meta note:

Sorry to those who tried to rate so far, I had something come up the Sunday of the Compo and was not able to work on my game that day. I put in a little more time the following weekend to get it in a playable state, but not more than I had planned to do within the Compo originally. As a result there is very little real art, no sound, and the game is very short (with no ending). But still, I like some parts of it and would like to share it. Hope you enjoy!

I liked your level design with the rocket jump, regular jump and rotating bouncy balls. The levels for jumping between platforms seemed fair and fun. Nice work!

Once I found the R button restarts the level, pretty fun little platformer.
If the rockets are only used for jumping, why even have an aim direction? Wouldnt you always want to aim down?
The level with the big pit and three bouncy balls seemed to be the last one, as the exit door did not work here.

It's a little tough to coordinate pressing buttons to move, jump, aim, and shoot sometimes, but I love the concept. Cool game.

The platforming is functional and responsive, which is actually saying quite a bit. It is a pretty bare bones submission, though. I don't really see the point of the rockets, when all they do is let you jump higher. Since there's only one direction you would ever want to shoot them, why have separate aiming controls? It just feels like a complex input that you have to do to make certain jumps. I did enjoy this game, though, it's technically solid.

Is this the last level? The door doesn't seem to work. A rocket jumping platformer is a great idea, would love to try a post-jam version!

@caeonosphere Yep! That's the end, didn't have time to add any sort of real ending.

Other folks - you can do different kinds of jumps by aiming the rockets. The original plan was to have enemies that you could actually shoot (either to kill them or to bounce them around to set up jumps). Also was thinking of situations where rocket jumping off the ceiling to fall faster would be required. Just didn't get a chance to add anything that made good use of aiming them. For this version of the game, you can just hold the down arrow the whole time :)

nice little game! although getting it to play is a bit of a hassle, first I would suggest not using rar but zip as windows can handle zip natively, while your rar couldn't be opened by even 7zip so I had to resort to winrar, then it needed .net core to be installed which I didn't have

Nice game, especially for a one day time period! I didn't really get how it fit into the theme, as dying is certainly not inevitable (and I may have grinded out a zero deaths playthrough to prove the point to myself). Also, left control felt like a very awkward keybind for rocket, but I suppose you couldn't really have put it anywhere else with the right hand taken up by arrow keys...
Great work!
