Why Bother by Vilmantas

[raw]
made by Vilmantas for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

The game is made especially difficult.

Don't expect to last more than a couple of waves.

It's made that way because there isn't much gameplay beyond what's been shown during the first couple of rounds.

An average game takes around a couple of minutes and you can expect to lose around wave 3.

Good zombie spawns and crate drops can push you to wave 4 at best. Anything beyond that means you're extra lucky.

Description:

After stumbling into an ancient cemetery you've found yourself surrounded by walking corpses.

All they want is to get a hold of that sweet, sweet brain of yours. Is that so much to ask?

You can only stay inside and hope that the fortifications on the shelter (that you just so happen to stumble across) will hold against the unending onslaughts of the dead.

They will not stop. They will make you join them.

The dead come in waves (and at very specific intervals, weird, huh?). After each wave you get some breathing room to walk around and, who knows, maybe gather some supplies to help you survive?

Game instructions:

Timer at the top displays the amount of time you have for gathering supplies comes or before zombies get smitten by God.

Zombies spawn at different locations (23 locations, spread all over the map) and move towards the shelter. Once their destination is reached they begin chipping away at the armor.

When the zombies are coming the player automatically retreats to the shelter. No further actions can be made while you're praying for Gods intervention.

If armor reaches zero - you're done.

After the zombies die player is free to move again and continue to delay the inevitable

Scattered around the map are crates that can be opened for a random amount of supplies (1-4 planks). Bring the planks back to the shelter to fix it up or to add fortifications

Lightning will sometimes strike random zombies during the onslaught phase. Don't rely on it to save you though.

Controls:

  • Press LEFT MOUSE button to MOVE the PLAYER

  • Press SPACE when near a CRATE to OPEN it.

  • Press M to MUTE the sounds

  • Walk over a PLANK to pick it up.

  • E DROPS the PLANK that's being carried.

  • Bring the PLANK to the shelter to improve it.

Very atmospheric graphics. Great work on making all the assets within the timeframe, very impressive. Crying in your house as the world turns to zombies: relatable lol

I like the concept ! I was expecting to be able to defend myself, but the base being the only defense makes it unique

I was able to survive through wave 4, but couldn't figure out how to survive any longer

Great graphics!! Addition sounds and ambiance would have added a lot, but this is a very solid submission! Thank you for uploading!

Nice entry! I love the visual theme and the art style alot! Very captivating!

The only thing I felt was for the movement of the player to be a bit more smoother. I personally felt the character takes a bit of time to react to the clicks!

@darandin

I didn't think of an cool way to have the guy defend himself as he's 'paralyzed with fear' so I had him simply sit down and weep, otherwise I would've turned this into some kind of doom-like zombie killer game.

There's a lightning bolt that hits every once in a while which supposed to help the player but right now I made the game this difficult just to have the game-loop much shorter so that it doesn't become too easy/boring.

Thank you very much for the review! :v:

I really liked the idea of being unable to fight back, it made it fit the theme much better in my opinion. I also thought the graphics worked very well, both the environment and the fog/FX, with a consistent low poly look across the board!

Mood is nice, but how to survive?

All you can do is open crates, pick up planks and fix up the shelter. You can't actually 'survive' as the dead will get you sooner or later.

Amazing art and atmosphere! The few waves I was able to do were really fun. I think there's a great base here for a larger game.

Beautiful game!! Graphics are very nice, the idea is pretty cool, since you feel hopeless when you're just waiting for the night to pass, it'll be nice to have something to do during the night at some point in the game. I think this idea can be expanded into a full game if you add something like that. Loved the art style! Congrats on your game!

That game is really challenging, I couldn't go beyond the third wave. Nice graphics, it really gives the game a depressing atmosphere

Fun game! I could absolutely see this being built into a full game. I like that if you have a plank of wood and a wave is incoming you don't just drop it and walk back but actually bring the plank back to base to fortify. Nice lightning effects too.

It's impressive! the game looks great and works very well! I have a suggestion, let the first waves be less punishing so the player can see the entire shelter you made!

Great job!

Great potential to add a little more depth to the game to make it last longer :)
Graphics are superb and the controls feel responsive, maybe adding a little bit depth with the "crafting" part would make this a hit! Good work!

This was so scary. I died so fast before I got the hang of it. When I did it was really fun.
Would love to see more sound effects (what do the zombies sound like??) and maybe some music.
Graphics are great!

Almost made it to round 6! I enjoy difficult games :). Nice work, impressive ammount and quality of models and vfx for a compo game.

Cool that you managed such a large amount of 3D assets for a compo entry! It was very hard to gather wood since most of the boxes were so far away. I had a good laugh at the guy cowering in fear within his hovel.

Controls felt good, loved the mood of the map. Would of been nice to have some background music. I wanted to play longer than the 3 waves, but I understand why you did that.
