Overall game is made good and attractive
Other than that the physics felt really good.
I also couldn't figure out how to get the candle into the mug unfortunately (maybe there was another possible route which lets you drop it in from above, I arrived dragging it from the right), but I played long enough to say you've got a concept that works! It was fun for the most part. The achievements on the first level were perhaps a little bit too easy to find however.
Also very pretty pixel art (and lots of it!). The tune playing was also enjoyable and fitting.
Overall you did well with the mood of the levels I experienced.
Still, enjoyed the little playtime.
I like the graphics, very consistent and cute. Music is fitting, but a bit too repetitive to "present".
The achievements were really nice and i expected a big final by flying into the sun for endless warmth but i'm glad it's to be continued :p
Nice game !!
the way level changes via mug flying is a good touch. Rope mechanic is cool.
great entry!
@starship-captain-becca Thanks for the kind words and the feedback, we did a hotfix to make rope swinging less difficult.
@minthamie I know platformers are not for everyone, we tried to make the game not too difficult to focus more on the story but maybe it was still a bit hard for some parts, thank you for taking the time to test our game :)
@james-7777 Thank you for your kind words :) We took into account your feedback on rope swinging and made it easier to click on the logs, thanks for that !
@brandsma Thank you ! Same as above, we took into account your feedback on rope swinging, should be easier now :)
@aymeric-le-moal Thanks, yeah the candle part was not very understandable, but thanks to your feedback we added a simple tutorial close to the candle to help with how it works.
@siskan Sorry about the issue with the jumps ^^' We kind of forgot to test it, but it's now fixed ! Same as above, we added an in-game tutorial for the candle, sorry for the confusion.
And yes the first achievements were easy to get on purpose to introduce the achievement system to the player :)
@thibault-raffaillac Hello and thanks for the kind words ! Yes we had issues with the key binds, for AZERTY keyboards, the easiest is to player with the directional arrows, it's not perfect but we didn't have time to do better ^^
For the candle, you have to drag it by clicking on it to grab it with the rope, it is now tutorialized in-game thanks to your feedback :)
@itzemii Unfortunately controller is not supported, it was too much work for the rope swinging. Thanks for the kind words !
@manan Thank you ! Very happy that you loved it and managed to finish it :) Yes we went a bit overboard with the reaction faces, it was very funny to draw and add them to the game !
(Btw the W to jump is now fixed)
@daniel-username Thanks for the feedback ! When swinging you can use the left/right keys to swing left/right and press the jump key to detach yourself and land where you want (hopefully ^^)
@enderswype Yeah we went a bit overboard with the mug reaction faces haha :) That would indeed be a cool ending, but maybe a bit less fitting with the theme, I'm not sure.
@mortalfosca Haha happy you liked the faces and the Mug being able to fly ^^
@janniz Thank you very much :)
Edit: i just realized that i got a catchy tune from the music XD
@melektaus Thanks for the kind words :) The v1.0 release is indeed totally playable, except for some quality of life issues. Happy that you liked the music haha
@dgspitzer Thank you, we gave extra attention to the reaction faces of the mug
I do have two thoughts about the platforming itself:
- There doesn't seem to be a variable-height jump. This becomes annoying when you have to climb up the sets of platforms on the side of a wall, e.g. when getting the lighter. In particular, the platforms are placed so that your jump overshoots them by quite a bit, making climbing up these areas kind of tedious because you are in the air much longer than you need to be.
- The swinging physics are, in my opinion, not as fun as they could be. In particular, clicking a swinging pivot kind of just teleports you to be swinging there, without much in the way of maintaining your momentum. I think that swinging physics are a lot more fun when they incorporate your existing momentum and the character flows naturally in and out of the swinging state. I can't think of any game examples off the top of my head, but I hope you can see what I mean.
All that said, this was a pretty fun game to play through, and I also went back and got the Speedrunner achievement, which was fun. It was especially cool that jumping into Maggy would skip the cutscenes for that. That was a very nice touch.
I also think that the large variety of mechanics was cool. In particular, it was neat how the teabag string was used both for swinging and for grabbing the candle, and it was cool how there were multiple kinds of item interactions (picking them up, pushing them, and grabbing them with the string).
So overall, a very good entry, definitely the best platformer I've played so far this Ludum Dare.
@honey-pony Thanks for the in-depth comment ! Yes we didn't implement a variable jump height, it could have been a good idea indeed.
And for the swinging, it's true it could have been made better with more time, and the snapping was intentionally to not get stuck on the ground too easily but it was not best solution. When I think about games with this sort of mechanisms, I think about *Speedrunners*' grappling hook which is very smooth and satisfying to use, I would have loved this kind of swinging but we didn't have enough time to polish this feature more.
@sephowepho Haha thank you very much :)
Pros:
- Amazing art, love the style
- Great animations and effects
- Multiple levels
- Clever puzzles, and multiple mechanics to be thrown at the player
- Minimalistic UI for tutorial is a +
- Great controls feel, including physics
- Characters are just adorable (for a Typical Tea enjoyer like me)
- Going back to the Maggy is actually such a cool idea, makes you feel... warm
- Hey! There's music!
- The game even has achievements
- SPAAAAAAACEEEEE
Cons:
- I just wish it was longer
- Speaking of controls, I believe a keyboard-only layout could be achieveable with some clever targeting, but hey, it works just fine with mouse as well
A superb work made by you guys. Excellent job!
got the climber achievement!
