M.A.D.D. by Flying Dog Fish

[raw]
made by Flying Dog Fish for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

M.A.D.D. actually stands for Mutual Assured Destruction Defense

You found yourself in an situation against a ruthless enemy. Try to survive as long as you can by avoiding bullets, but the ending is inevitable.

Make sure to hit that blue arrows button below the game to play in fullscreen mode, it's a much better experience.

The character follows your mouse. Gather dead bullets to collect resources.

Press left mouse button to place a protective wall that can take a few bullets for you. You can push the walls around freely.

Press right mouse button to place a turret with heat-seaking missiles. These can be destroyed by the incoming missiles so protect them if you can.

Pick red cross boxes to regain full health.

Tools used: - Whiteboard for planning - Inkscape with Wacom Bamboo for the art - Sound recorder / Audacity for sfx - Unity and Microsoft Visual Studio to make the actual game in

The music was created especially for this game during the event by my friend Aziraphal, everything else was created from scratch by myself during the event.

Cool game, I had fun playing!
It simple yet entertaining, the humor gives the game some charm.
I like the wall placing mechanic and that your able to move them after placing them.
I developed futher it might be cool if you could use your colleted bullets to buy more walls, turrets other upgrades.
Great work!

I reached inevitable mutually assured destruction! Not sure how to feel about that...

I managed to beat the game. It was a bit too easy when I figured out that I could just build a wall around myself and win. I felt like the turrets weren't very effective compared to the walls. Anyway, I like the unique control scheme. Avoiding bullets with a mouse felt really good. I also really liked the way the music got more and more intense over time, which fit with the theme of the game.

@theunusualart Thanks. Other upgrades besides wall and turrets were planned but were scrapped because of the lack of time. See [the plan](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/m-a-d-d/obligatory-ugly-whiteboard-pictures). This game seems like something I should develop further so I might just do that some time.

@dennis-magnusson Thanks. There wasn't enough time to balance the game properly, but I might just do that at a later date. I'll let the composer know about the music.

Love the humor here and found it fun to play. This game could go a long with with a bit more balancing. Well done!

Loved it. Great game!

It grabbed me and gave me a brief but good time.

One of the few entries I stopped reviewing and just started playing.

A very fun game, thought i was doing so well with loads of turrets and walls and then all the walls fell.

Well done on a solid entry

Very nice! At first I was just avoiding bullets, but then I realized I could place a whole lot of walls around which made it feel much safer, even though I was just delaying the inevitable ;)

Great little Game jam. Think you can revisit the graphics and push the visuals more. Camera shakes /hit damage. Add some more satisfying visual ques. Overall enjoyed it.

Really fun to just build a bunch of walls around and see how many can fit on screen, although I feel there should be a limit on the amount of walls you can place

@phats604 Thanks. The visuals can always be pushed some more, but in this case it's even more true, the turrets are more or less placeholders anyway.

I had fun playing this. I found it helps to keep the mouse away from the player for better control. Lots of humour too and a catchy sound loop. Well done on a nice entry.

Like the sarcastic dialogues under the progress/time bar, sounds like the excuses countries in real life are using when starting wars.

Great game!

Turrets should be drawn below the player and other bullets, or it will become difficult to dodge.

Fun gameplay! I like how messy the map becomes after a few seconds. Maybe too easy to build a fortress and wait for the end of the counter, but quite satisfying at the same time :)

Solid entry! Sometimes I got hit by seemingly nothing, but I think that's just the bullets being hard to read when it gets a bit cluttered.

Fun game!

I reached the end.

This was a cool idea and the music was very good. The text at the top was a nice touch as well. However, the game could've used a bit of balance. It was fairly easy to just spam walls in the second half so that most bullets couldn't get to you. On a similar note, the bullets seem to be able to spawn anywhere. I've seen some spawn right next to me and I think some spawned on me as well, which was rather annoying.

Overall this was a great game though. Good job!

This is a game that gets better the more hectic it gets. Turtling was a viable strategy but that didn't entirely offset the tension of how my walls were getting chewed through quickly by the hail of bullets by the end.

My only gripe is that the orientation of the walls is based on the player's facing, and the player's facing is based on their movement. It's not a TREMENDOUS issue, given that the walls can be pushed around easily, but it's hard to be precise placing them to begin with.

@dafluffypotato Thanks. I'm pretty sure bullets don't spawn everywhere, they just have the tendency to sneak up on you, especially when there's a lot of dead walls around you. I agree about the balancing, there just wasn't enough time for that.

@ryusui Thanks. So where do you think the walls should face if not directly in front of the player?

15. Apr 2022 · 07:15 UTC
@flying-dog-fish Considering the game already has mouse controls, maybe a click-and-release system (like you can see a "ghost" wall that you can rotate, and releasing the button places it)?

Fantastic! I loved the way that the used bullets become resources for you to build. Also, the health packs were great for luring you outside of the safety of your fort. Good decision to make them non-movable.
