Untitled Shooty Game

This is my submission for LUDUM DARE 50 with the theme "Delay the Inevitable".

I am still a bit new to Ludum Dare, new to game jams, new to Godot and new to gamedev in general, so be kind, rewind.

I am not an artist, so please excuse the programmer art. And the weird mishmash of notes that is the BG music.

Stuff I wanted to add to the game but ran out of time for:

  • more enemy ship components
    • beam turret: charges then fires a long beam (you can dodge while it's charging)
    • seeker spawner: spawns fast-moving seeker missiles. they're faster than you but less maneuverable (they have to turn) and you can shoot them down
    • components which improve the ship's move speed or fire rate
  • more enemy ship types, especially larger ones with more cores
  • more powerups:
    • speed up
    • fire rate up
    • shield (temporary)
    • weapon upgrades (fire two bullets at once, spread gun, etc)

Great little game! I really liked that the enemy ships were made up of components that you could destroy independently. And to be honest the background music created quite an eery vibe that worked. If that was intentional than good job! :D

Overall a solid ld entry!

Nice shooty game. I was expecting thrust-controls given the triangular shape of the ship and was relieved that you chose to just let each key move you in the obvious direction  The level can easily become overwhelming but I'm guessing that that is the point given the theme. As you mentioned, obviously more weapons and a larger variation of enemies would be cool but then again its a 48h compo, who has the time for that. Well done!

I recorded myself playing, message me on the Jam’s discord @ Dark Peace and I’ll send it to you. I got a random boss spawning when I restarted a run, idk if it's normal. It was a pretty cool game tho.

Nice game! But the movement is a little bit too slow. So maybe faster base movement. But you mentioned upgrades. I think it would be fine with them. Still solid entry. I like it. Keep it up!

Also here is my score:

This was SUPER fun!! I played 4 times, and got a highscore of 01:37 and 13 kills... Which might not be a lot but I got a lot of big ships :)

The audio worked really well, especially since it kind of introduced the next enemy! You may call your graphics "programmer graphics", but they worked really, really well with everything. Especially since it was easy to see what was what and what did what! Also the controls were really good, really intuitive!

Great job! :D

Nice! I'm on a laptop trackpad and keyboard right now, but i'll give this a shot later on my pc as well. As the feedback above me stated, I also think a faster movement speed would have made the gameplay feel better, but at least it was challenging and it was cool that I had to focus on shooting, aiming and avoiding enemy ships' bullets! Also I liked the variety of enemy ships the further I got in the game

Graphics are decent, and overall it's a cool untitled shooty game :) Also it fit the theme perfectly which is a part often forgotten in Ludum Dare submissions! :) Good job!

I really liked the fact that you could destroy the enemies down to just their core and that would finish them off. Just that little touch made it quite different to a lot of shooters out there, and they generally tend to all be v similar, so nice one! I wished the ship could have moved a little faster, to escape getting pinned in a corner for example, but on the other hand I guess that's just another level of tactics to be considered when playing. Congrats on making the compo deadline and creating everything yourself, that's not easy!

Cheers! :beers:

Always a big fan of shmups, your's is fun! But the ship is waaaay to slow in my opinion, it feels heavy to move and it make it sometimes really hard to dodge. And sometimes there is nothing on screen for like 10 secondes and suddenly, big ennemy and the screen is full of bullets, this could need a bit of balencing imo ! But overall like others said the principle of being able to destroy ennemis by destroying their core is a nice idea!
Are those ships procedural ?

Fun bullet helly shooter, little slow as other have said.

Feels a little random for high score runs, I like the fighters etc thats cool. would like more power ups to make me think about other things rather than use timing my bombs.

Good entry!

@tyrannas yeah, basically each ship template has a bunch of slots where i put a randomly-chosen "component"

@bottled-up-dark-peace yeah, there's like a 25% chance of the big ship starting out

Thanks everyone for playing and for the feedback! Noted on the ship speed concerns and the timing between new ships, definitely areas for improvement!

Good job on this! My one major suggestion is to make the enemies easier at the start and ramp up gradually over time, right now it feels fairly random. The sound effects work well (though the shooting is rather loud), and good job on making the music yourself (I gave up on doing that a while ago!). I hope you continue working on this to add more features!

You might be new but this was great. The ship was pretty slow but the mechanics are good! Art isn't that bad either. Keep working at it and you'll do well! Good entry :)

Core gameplay is fun. From controls to enemy AI it all works great. Graphics and audio are nothing too special, but they get the job done. However, the explosion/damage taking sound effect is WAY too loud compared to the rest of the audio. Had you had the time to implement all the planned features the game could have been even better, but overall great work for a solo entry.
