About:

Play Road Rage Mage! It's a turn-based race to the finish in a lit 2.5D scene!

Race your rival, The Inevitable, and stop him from winning! Delay him with your spells, or speed your way past to escape him. But there are rules to wizardry, such as not using the same kind of spell twice. Strategize and think wisely, or be left to bite the pixie dust.

Under the new night sky after the sun has set, the highway has become a battle between two sorcerers... and their sick rides..

How to Play:

Win either by: - Speeding beyond the right - Delaying the enemy beyond the left - Being ahead when the race ends

You have three kinds of abilities: - Red, - Blue, - Green.

Pick one color, and you restrict the kind of abilities you can pick next turn:

Blue Abilities: - Spark: Deal a small amount of damage to delay the enemy. - Boost: Speed ahead by a small amount.

Green Abilities: - Nitro Boost: Speed ahead by a large amount. - Nitro Shield: Apply "Shielded" status effect to self. If the enemy attacks you, then you boost.

Our Message:

Hello!! It's good to be back! Our third Ludum Dare submission and one year anniversary has been fun! We received a lot of great feedback from LD49 on our 2.5d turn-based game Last Breath. We loved the direction in visuals and lighting, so our lovely Artist @Sofimei leaned into the strengths and put her more experienced pixel art skills to good use, now having a parallax background and vfx. But were lacking in how fun our last jam was. Our Lead Programmer @RezTheCoward has dedicated time and care to play testing this jam, evaluating how a battle would play out to make sure there needs to be some thought put into every move made. Addition of music has made a big difference last time and we loved its contribution to completing the environment. So here, our Musician @Agent-Peterson has put good work into designing the music and adding more sounds and even an ambience layer. Give it a listen!

Please don't hesitate to give us constructive criticism!

Wonderful graphics. Great idea. Hard for me to strategically pick a move. I'd recommend the player action buttons be larger.

Aaa what a gorgeous game! The art style in this is so wonderful - I love how clean the interface is, the land scape, and how the colour palette all ties it in nicely! It's so pretty and boppy~! All of the options play really nicely, and while I didn't have a great strategy going in, it was satisfying to play! I really love the overall mood this sets up. I saw there was an announcer volume slider in the volume options - I would've loved to see that implemented, it was so fun as is! Perhaps in a future patch? :eyes: ◊

nice art and music. Seems a little too easy with just choosing the boost options
Maybe adding a rocks paper scissors element to it would add some complexity?

The art is really good! Loved it! The Inevitable was a pushover. Didn't attack at all. But maybe I just got lucky. Nice work. A turn based race was a good idea.

Really gorgeous art style and great music. The tactics feel kind of like a poker-style bluff calling kind of game, but the placement of the cars on the racetrack really influence the mind game of whether you go aggressive or defensive. Using the nitro shield when the enemy uses combustion feels sweet. I would like to face off against a human opponent to see how that impacts the feel of the game. Very well done.

Very cool. Looks amazing, sounds great. The gameplay is a little difficult for me to understand. I won a couple times, but I'm not sure what I was doing to win. I think it might help to have descriptions for what's happening like "you used boost, enemy used shield", then see the result, I think it would help on-boarding faster. I think animations are trying to communicate that, but it's easy to miss. Overall a very good entry! Great job!!

Also, I won in just 3 turns so that has to be a record or something right?

Turned-based racing is something I would've never put together but y'all nailed it! Awesome work, amazing art, great gameplay, awesome music, I can keep going on and on! As a be of feedback it was a little confusing knowing which car was my car at first but otherwise I had a blast :D

I really enjoyed the art and music, they were superb. I especially liked the effect of lights flying past the cars. This was a very clever take on the theme, and I don't think I've seen a turn based racing game before! Definitely an idea I'd like to see explored more!

It did take me a moment to figure out which car was mine based on the title colors. It also wasn't super clear what I could or couldn't click on in the hud. I enjoyed this entry thoroughly!

Woooow those graphics are definitely the best I've seen this jam.

Cute pixel art, clean lightning and effects, nice animations, plus sound that goes well with it? I'm definitely saving this for future inspiration.
The gameplay is nice, maybe a bit too complex at first sight but ok once you grasp the basics of damage > speed > shield > damage and strong red or green > basic blue.

Thanks for the game I had fun ❤️‍🔥

Such a beautiful game! The control buttons are very small, and at first it was not super clear if they have an effect on anything. I as well was not sure which car was the player's. The gameplay was a little confusing at first, but once I had the ability descriptions open next to the game, the race was very fun!

This game was incredibly well crafted. You have a very strong team and clearly work well together.

The artwork was the highlight (the parallax background especially), but you can't ignore the overall game design either. The power rules were a really smart idea to force some sort of strategy.

Hats off to the music as well. I can tell a lot of work and skill went into that, and it matched the environment excellently.

(Quick bug note: when I opened the options menu from the start menu, all the sliders started at zero :o)

beautiful game, but I did not understand how to play. Just won by pressing all the buttons without thinking

The art was good, but my smooth brain was way too confused, things would happen and it felt like I had no say in the matter. Obviously that isn't the case, but it felt really frustrating at times.

First thing that jumps out is how incredible it looks, everything from the title screen to the characters to the environment is honestly amazing. Same with the sound, it's fantastic too and together it really sets the mood. I like the idea of doing something a bit different than the normal turn based game, instead of an RPG you've made a turn based mage racing game which is a really fun idea. A lot of fun to play too, especially after I'd figured out how everything works and was thinking tactically.

Only complaint I have is that the UI is a bit small but not a huge issue and it being small really lets the art shine. Regardless, great job!

Graphics and audio are absolutely top notch and it's fun to play around with different strategies to try and get ahead (although I'm yet to settle on a winning one XD)

Love the visuals and sound design. Quite a cool concept. I recon this would make a really good mobile game.

The graphics and the SFXs are incredibly good, the gameplay loop is fun and addicting!

Only thing to note: once the enemy gets far behind, it starts to shield everytime he can: this leads to him falling a lot behind and in a guaranteed win ( once he does, he can't nitro boost and i can just combust him to death )

Awesome game! Since you are looking for feedback:

- The art style is amazing, looks great, keep it up.
- Music is really nice, but not necessary type of music I think about in a race game. Something more hype (some sick guitar, drums, etc.) in my opinion would be even better. Think Mad Max: Fury Rad - Brothers In Arms, for example.
- The GUI is looks awesome.
- Sound effect are cool too.
- I guess, adding more opponents at once that will interact with player and each other, or different types of opponent (some use boost more often, other focus on defense, etc.), will give player even more to think about and to figure out. But I understand it would be way harder to balance.

Anyway, great entry!

I just love the art style and the idea, its awesome. Very innovative and new and the animations and environment and so on are just great looking, although I feel like the gameplay could be possibly more varying and maybe the addition of something like randomness could add this and made the races more interesting and replayable.

I really like how differently you took the theme. Also, great graphics & sounds!
The gameplay is a bit hard to understand to be honest. Maybe you can think of giving more feedback based on the player actions in your next game.
Good job overall! Thank you.

Everything about the game is spot on!

The sound, the art and the game design!

My favorite thing was the game design and the "battle" style, so congrats for those that thought that!

Thank you for letting me play your game! :D

Wow what a beautiful game, LOVE the graphics and the audio! The game design is also insane, so much that it actually took me by surprise. Since it's a race game, my first thought was to use WASD to race, but it didn't take long to figure out what was happening and I had that "AAAH" moment, which is what I crave for!

Really nice looking and some interesting concepts.

Mechanically I think a better intro might have helped. As is I thought "I'll play once so maybe the description will actually make some sense to me", but jokes on me cos I won by a mile by spamming boost and nitro boost.

Big fan of the art style and I think the mechanics could be more diverse as I could pretty much by just boosts but was very enjoyable. quite short but if you added extra racers/races I think this could be more fleshed out overall.

WOAH! The background has like, 9 layers to it. Actually outstanding. The animations are gorgeous, the background parallax, the special effects when casting spells, all of it is beyond outstanding. Again, this background has so many layers to it, I'm impressed! It all looks good.

I was able to win in like, 3 turns by using the shield, boost, shield. It's a bit of a short game, but holy cow that background. Rest assured, the effort spent on that background made this an easy 5 star in graphics. And ooh boy, I don't hand those out frequently. Marvelous work.

After figuring out the ropes of the game, it becomes real fun! Love the visuals with the shadows created by the street lights we drive by. I'd like a little more context or prologue as to why us mages are racing eachother down route 66. Good Submission.

The art and music for this game is definitely the star. To begin with i struggled to work out what i needed to do until I found the buttons on the UI and even after reading the descriptions i wasn't sure how to work out the best one to play each turn to get a better outcome. Great game though :)

Fantastic art! I think it might be neat to play this against another human if that would be in the cards; could even do it locally by pressing buttons on the keyboard to secretly input the spell you're going to cast
