Hack OR Die by Hakro

[raw]
made by Hakro for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

Description

Hack Or Die turns you into a Professional Hacker. You can scan for network nodes to attack, from which you can steal money to buy new upgrades, viruses, and network delayers.

Be careful, the network also has other hackers that can attack you. Use the delayers wisely to temporarily disable their attacks.

If your firewall reaches 0%, it's game over for you. You only need a mouse to play.

Shop items :

  1. Scanners : Allow you to scan the network to find more nodes to attack, and thus earn more money, quicker.
  2. Viruses : Used to attack other nodes. Viruses hurt the enemies firewalls, and allow you to steal their money. The more the firewall is damaged, the quicker you can earn money.
  3. Delayers : Boosts your firewall, and delays any attacks from other hackers for 10 seconds. This is your only chance of survival

Great idea, but I want MORE!

The appeal of this game loop is excellent. The mechanics generally play nicely together, but the experience doesn't scale well past the first minute.

1. Once you have a steady income stream, then money doesn't matter. I became cash immortal within 40 seconds of playing. To fix this, the cost of items should go up over time.
2. When a node is depleted of cash or firewall, something should happen. A red node made it to $0 then just starting counting in the negatives... This was unexpected and sort of demoralizing since it felt like the game was broken.
3. The text didn't render very well on my screen so it was hard to read. Not a dealbreaker though.

Thanks for sharing this.

Great concept; I really enjoy the clicker-style gameplay with the hacking theme! The balance at the start was great when I was frantically trying to buy all the equipment I needed, but the difficulty capped out pretty quickly when I ran out of new nodes to discover and had my shields up 100% of the time. Good job overall though!!
