Spiraland by A Chill Lemur

[raw]
made by A Chill Lemur for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

A rogue-like platformer built mostly to test out spawning an infinitely expanding spiral of platforming challenges.

The goal is ever moving so... expect delays... sorry I know that's kinda shoehorned in. I was hoping for the teleportation theme if I'm honest and this is what I wanted to build.

It's built with modular levels spawned in on a grid generated in a spiral pattern ala Ulam's Spiral. Ulam's spiral is all about Prime numbers, and I didn't do anything special with the primes, ran out of time, but I think with more time to design levels and challenges and a few more mechanics this could turn into something proper.

Controls:

  • WASD for movement (I used Godot's physical keys, so it should work on non QWERTY keyboards)
  • Space to jump, double jump, and triple jump
  • Hold down left mouse button to target your teleport, release to zip to your target (You can only do this if you have the triangle powerup)

Avoid the red stuff, get the rainbows

THE SHINIES. Really like the visual style of this game and found it really fun.

Sometimes I'd lose control though (wouldn't move in the direction I'm holding, or start jumping weirdly?) and I wasn't sure if this was a mechanic that I didn't understand or if there were a couple bugs. Fun regardless though!

Great work, sometimes I lose control and my character drifts towards the left side.

Great code for generating phases! I found the colors a little too strong, (I played for like 20 minutes, but I always died with my character being thrown off the screen for some reason)

I wish I had started using teleportation sooner.

Congratulations!

Good platformer, sometimes when I jumped I couldn't change the direction in mid air. Great job anyways!

Fun platformer! I also found that sometimes I couldn't change direction in mid-air when jumping?

Fun to play. The stretch effect of the player character block works well to convey momentum.

Pretty challenging! The air controls feel sometimes unresponsive, but, great aesthetic and loved the game!

Nice idea. I didn't mind the flashing graphics. I'm used to old computer games  The teleporting was a nice too bad the theme didn't turn out the way you wished.

Controls are a little funny, that is especially noticeable in mid air, but not sure if it's by design

Loved The level appearing as a transition. very neat :)

Decent platformer but the controls felt really unresponsive and weren't a good fit for some of the precision platforming required. I do like the random progression of levels and the fact that they exist in the same space - meaning you can use the platforms of a previous level to beat the next one.

Movement controls felt a bit off, but I liked the style and the ever expanding platforming area!

I love the colors. Graphics are simple but do the job.

The next level that appears is a good idea

Love the sound effects and the overall style! And nice to see some generated content. Too bad I couldn’t change the direction mid-air, I think that would make the controls feel nicer. But great entry nonetheless!

Very cool concept! Like others have said, the graphics are cool but the mid-air controls are kind of unpredictable. I like the jump sound effect, which is good, as you're gonna be jumping quite a few times in a platformer. Good job!
