Aunt Mavis (There's always one) by AlbionBrown

[raw]
made by AlbionBrown for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

The game

You and your Aunt Mavis arrive at a party, but Mavis loves a tipple and has a record of drinking too much! You must stop her from getting too drunk!

Controls

  • Arrow keys to move
  • Space bar to stop Aunt Mavis from drinking.

To play

Aunt Mavis will travel to different tables for a drink, you must knock the drink out of her hand.

To run

MacOS Users

I've noticed for some reason the graphics aren't rendered on MacOS, I'm not sure why. It works ok on Windows. Definitely the last game I try to make with vanilla Java.

The game is also quite unfinished. I got all the core things I needed in there, but hardly any other things that would enhance the game further.

Aunt Mavis 1.1 (The Relapse)

I wanted to add some more features that I didn't get time to during the Jam. If you're interested in playing, it's much the same game but with a bit more. Version 1.1 (The Relapse) is available here. I'll continue to add more to this version in the next few days. I completely understand if my voice gets annoying, do mute the application if you need to...

Controls for 1.1

  • Arrow keys to move
  • Space bar to stop Aunt Mavis from drinking.
  • Enter to restart (only when game is over)

Thanks @joselor and @kemsou! So much more I wanted to add. Might make an Aunt Mavis 1.5.

Wow, a game in Java, I didn't expect that! Well, there are tons of people who play Minecraft on Java. However, I haven't been able to play it because I'm on GNU/Linux and I didn't expect that I would need such a modern version of Java. Could you upload screenshots? This way you could attract attention and make people want to play your game even more.

It's very unusual to play Java now, it's a nice nostalgia. Aunt Mavis is a great character

It's always impressive to me that people can make a game without an game engine from the ground up. And to do it alone is even more impressive. Super fun theme and gameplay, I'm going to spend some time trying to get to 8PM. :D

Fun little game! An interesting pathfinding optimization problem. Novel interpretation of the theme.

The sound effect for "stop Aunt Mavis from drinking" made me laugh out loud, love it.

It would have been cool if the other party guests moved around, thus requiring more on-the-fly problem solving.

I found the hitboxes a little unforgiving. I would recommend making them smaller than the visuals, and also making them a little "squishy" so the player doesn't get stuck on the edges.

Overall solid entry! My highscore was 19:34 :)

@zimny11 @iamsodarncool Thanks for playing!
Zimmy - Yeah I made it so she was an unstoppable force, she simply must have her drink!

IAmSoDarnCool - Cheers for playing! There's a 2nd version of the game linked above where I added a few roaming guests. Regarding the hitboxes, you're right sometimes they're the worst. My GF's brother raged so hard getting caught by a single corner pixel. My high socre was the same, 19:34!
