Mine 54 by Locke8

[raw]
made by Locke8 for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

You are a general in charge of reclaiming mines that were taken over by the infestation. A threat that appeared out of nowhere some 200 years ago. After many successful victories over smaller and medium sized nests, the king has deemed you the perfect fit to try reclaiming Mine 54. An experiment originally meant to test how deep a new prototype driller could reach. The mine that the infestation first appeared in.

You've been given a state of the art portable reactor as well as a small squadron of engineers and gunmen. You will set up just outside the mine and work your way as deep as you can, clearing nests as you go. While the main infrastructure of the mine may not be completely intact, there are many maintenance corridors and doors you could likely use to gain access to the rest of the facility.

However, the deeper you go, the angrier the spawn seems to become, an unending wave of furious beasts, each more deadly than the last, you're sure now, that if you were to fall, this nest won't stop at just reclaiming the ground it has lost, you are the only thing standing between you and your countries, no, you species survival.

Do not fail.

Game info:

When the timer at the top of the screen reaches 0, you lose.

Enemies attacking the reactor will make the timer go down faster.

Destroy enemy nests to increase the time you have left.

Use doors to reach deeper levels and find other nests.

Nests gradually spawn stronger enemies the longer they are active.

Engineers have a larger light radius than other units use them when exploring if you have trouble finding your way.

Controls:

Select units or structure with left click.

Drag for square selection.

Right click to give orders.

Right click doors to order your units to travel through them.

Your units will attack the closest enemy to them automatically

Mousewheel to zoom

~Note: The control system is quite janky; we had no time to finish bugfixing it~

Final bug fix rush in progress. Sorry if the game is nonfunctional, we're doing our best before the main programmer has to sleep.

Final bugfix Lock8 could manage is out, doors work! There's a lot more we would of liked to do but we just didn't have time.

I played for a few minutes, but I have to admit, I don't know what I did and what to do haha. Quite hard to get what to do.

But Beside I liked the art and the retro sound !

Maybe need a detailed tutorial? I want to understand it! :p

I feel humbled by the fact that my artstyle was likeable, on a sidenote, this was my first ever interaction with animation of sorts, and I really feel bad for Locke8 as he had to make the 2 non-sniper dwarf sprites himself as I decided that playing Stellaris for several hours with music on making Discord pings near impossible to hear when I was called in to make more sprites. I really feel bad about the fact that I didn't make more alien sprites, I had all the groundwork for unique enemies art-wise but as I am a moron I simply didn't do that. I also still didn't see my animations in action, outside of the several gifs I made for showcase in the group Discord, I would also like to hear thoughts on the dwarf sniper shooting animation, since while making it I thought it looks extremely weird but I couldn't find a better way to implement the recoil, etc.

Updated the description a little to help clear up any confusion on what you should do after seeing some of the comments here. Hope it helps!

Interesting little game. I really liked the music, and building new characters was a very nice part of the game. I would have liked there to be some feedback on when my units were attacking. Like an animation or sound effect to indicate that they're attacking other than the small enemy health bars decreasing. All in all I enjoyed it and would like to see more of it!

Like matt-rice said, a little feedback would have helped the game a lot! It was hard to tell how my units were attacking, or how I was supposed to use them best.

But I think you had a great start! I loved the style and I was really excited to build up my army against the waves of enemies.

I agree with some of the other comments here about hard to know what exactly to do, but I did like the look/sound of the game.

Pretty fun, though there seemed to be an issue with going fullscreen, since the units wouldn't go where I clicked, rather offset by some amount.
