All grown up? by Helen

[raw]
made by Helen for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

title_image.png Steve lives at his parents house. Can he delay growing up some more?

It's my first point and click adventure and my first compo :) So I totally underestimated the time. Sadly I didn't had enough time to add proper message handling and sound.

I used Unity, Rider and Illustrator to make the game.

How to play

  • Movement - Left Mouse Button
  • Confirm dialogue/message - Enter
  • Show inventory - Tab

Edit: Fixed WebGL Build afterwords

Fun little game about cleaning! I had a good time focusing in the cleaning, also trying to get those apples for the cake haha

I think I did everything? First I Cleaned the room and made the pie, but then I remembered the theme and thought I did something wrong. Then I went on a rampage and killed the cat, kill the grandma. Its pretty funny how morally opposite those things are. Good submission

@austin-sierra Thanks! Almost, you also could dress the cat, throw some trash in the closet or hide food in the closet.
I'm happy you played it multiple times :)

If I had more time I would add some other options to be more childish.

To slice the apples I had to add a knife. Then I thought: 'What if somebody tries to use it on the grandma?'

Love the style. What did you build with? I highly recommend trying Visionaire Studio if you haven't already. I was a little confused at first- I thought I saw some controls somewhere, but couldn't find on itch.io. Finally, I found them here! I knew that I saw them somewhere. I picked up everything before, but, now, with a working inventory- the game really shaped up! Fantastic and detailed job. Really impressed that this is a compo. The "achievements" are a nice touch! Steve is a cat killer. Great job and thanks for the game!

@joemid Thanks for your feedback! I updated my itch.io page with the controls and definitely have a look at Visionaire Studio. Thanks for the tipp!

I used Unity and Rider and made the graphics with a super old version of Illustrator.

Before this ludum dare I made a couple of jams with my friends. This time we decided to take the challenge of compo and I'm surprised and proud I did it :)

Very cool ideas in here! Lot's of options for how to progress the game. The art style is cool too.

Congrats on your first compo! I like a good story entry. I also like that you considered multiple scenarios and let the player try crazy things if they wanted to. The graphics worked well.

I would challenge you to try to add sounds next time. It really makes a big difference to have at least a little feedback there. I have only recently started trying to do more of it myself.

My other suggestion would be to spend half your time on polish (whatever time you have) in which I would include graphics, sound and improving UI. It is really difficult for me because I always have more I want to build and often want to add more rather than polish. I feel it is a good benchmark for planning though.

Great job making a game solo in 48 hours!

@blockerz Thanks for your advice! Definitely learned a lot in this time.
My fear was to get lost in the graphics, so I would miss out the rest. Instead of sound I tried some stuff which I didn't use in the end.
Next time I should go for the "feature complete" plan. Implement a small feature with functionality, then create only the graphics and sound needed.

I like the art and congratulations in your first compo!

I would polish some areas related with the order of drawing of elements (sometimes the door draws in front of the character), and also the UI to do actions with objects.

Thanks for the game! I've never tried making a point and click game before but now I am thinking about trying it out . I quite like exploring the different rooms. Although I did find a bug where you cannot click the hand icon in the inventory because it is blocked by the text that says things like "you should slice them!". This is an annoying issue I've had before with Unity but I think that you just need to disable the "raycast target" field on the text object. Great job and thanks!

Good job on your compo! I wasn't really sure what to do at first, but then I started clicking around and figured it out. I got stuck at the apple part. I had collected all of the apples, then I talked to the mom. At that point, I couldn't figure out how to progress. Maybe this is a bug? Also, are you supposed to be able to fly??? Good job on your game!

Thanks @pitxardo - I definitely have to fix the order of drawing.

@coatline When I played while developing the game, I always smashed enter when a text message was shown. So I didn't recognize it could be a problem. Thanks for mentioning it. I think I should hide the message when clicking somewhere else.

@melon-spirit Thanks for your feedback! First my idea of the rooms was another one where the player wouldn't look like he was flying. But then I hadn't enough time to draw nice backgrounds, so I also had no time to restrict the movement. Thanks for mentioning the bug. I think you can go further when you hide the message by hitting enter. Then you can give her an Apple. She'll say that she needs slices. You can combine apple and knife in your inventory by clicking on the hand icon of both. Then finally you can give her an Apple slice and the game is finished.

Thanks to all for playing! :)
