Find, Fling, Repeat by chilljams

[raw]
made by chilljams for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

You're an astronaut who has been separated from your ship, & now you're about to be sucked into a black hole! Move around with WASD & control your tractor beam with your mouse to fling asteroids away from the black hole, & delay the inevitable of it getting bigger & consuming you! Using the tractor beam costs energy, so replenish it using batteries scattered across space! Due to their charge, batteries can't be picked up by the tractor beam! Happy beaming!

Change Log:!

  • Fixed bug where amount of energy would go over limit
  • Tweaked SFX volumes
  • Adjusted spawning rates
  • Added support for arrow keys!

Finally got my game, "Find, Fling, Repeat" done in time for the compo! Play it here in browser: https://jamchills.itch.io/find-fling-repeat

Rather simple mechanics but they all work together and fit very well with the theme. The art style while minimalist looks good and the 'blinking star' animation on the background was a nice touch. The game overall feels well polished for a compo game, and the main menu is a perfect example of that with lots of details (animated buttons, the asteroids, black hole & character doing their thing on the sides) making it very lively.
As to the less good stuff, I've found a potential exploit as in you can push the asteroids away by rushing into them (not sure that was intended). Also, the sound effects felt a bit too loud, especially compared to the music.

Got sucked in trying to grab batteries, very nice.
Overall, I loved the graphics and the vibe it gives, it's fun simple gameplay.

Sometimes if you try to fling asteroids too close to the edge they get "stuck" and you have to click again to let go. Also it seemed that even though the bar is full if you keep grabbing batteries the energy keeps increasing beyond it. I thought the music fit the mood, but it was a very short loop so there's not much else to say about it, maybe a few more .

My favorite thing was the graphics, and the stars blinking in the background are especially nice.

Not much in this world thats as innevitable as a block hole. Nice execution of the theme!

Cool game, it looked nice and the theme was well integrated into the game. I think the SFX is way too loud when compared to the music and bit little repetitive, but overall nice game.

Nice simple game. I think the battery charge can go over the cap on the UI.

The game loops isn't super intuitive, but you explained it quite well. I think a death animation would have been cool, but the game looks pretty good without it. Its a good game and defeat definitely feels inevitable!

Super Simple! Super Clean, really well executed! The art was really cute and I also really liked the fact that you necessarily needn't always use the laser and good just bump the asteroid with your head!

Just my personal taste: I felt the bgm could have been a little better :3

Really well put together game overall. Nice straight forward mechanics and fun to play around with.

Some nice bits of polish too with the button animations and the stars in the background.

Really simple but really cleanly executed and put together. I think the 8bit audio really works with the pixel aesethic. Wathcing the black hole slowly grow and the pull get stronger really felt like delaying the inevitable!

Nice, complete game! The feeling of the astronaut is a bit clunky, it would have been more satisfying to orbit the blackhole a little instead of being sucked directly to it. Enjoyed playing though :D

Music got a little repetitive quickly but the SFX were pretty good.

Asteroids should push the player, not the other way around. Sitting at the edge was still viable, but I did have to move to get more energy. That was a good addition.

Great concept, and well done in the 2 days.

Cool SFXs and graphics. I love the idea that you need to throw away asteroids to prevent black hole from spreading. :D

Great job!

Great game! I don't know if its just me, but I just want to feed the black hole. What can I do, it looks hungry... :hole:

The difficulty curve is going interestingly exponential, which one the one hands fit the overal theme, while may have sacrifices giving the right amount of challenge to players. A very clean game!

It felt like a neat combination of Space War!, Asteroids, and a little bit of Dig Dug. I liked the mechanics of flying around the black hole, as I felt like I could apply my Kerbal Space Program orbital mechanics skills.

The art and animations were cute, the controls were intuitive, and the sound effects were serviceable.

I wondered if the challenge would be greater if the tractor beam had a limited range. I found I could sit in one place at the edge of the screen and take out all of the rocks fairly easily, only moving to collect batteries. On the other hand, that requirement to get batteries meant that even my "optimal" strategy was dangerous. My high score so far was only 22.

Well done!
