Make a Manga Series but It's a Fishing Game by MayChant

[raw]
made by MayChant for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

Hello there! We're happy to have your new manga series on our magazine. Time to dive into your creativity and fish out some fresh new ideas! Now, a couple of tips before you start: 1. Use Left/Right Arrows or A/D to move; use Down Arrow or S to fish. 2. When you get an idea, you can use it on the current episode or keep it in your head for later. Both options are valid. 3. Make sure you leave enough time to put the ideas you've collected on paper. We cannot sell what's still in your head ;) 4. Try not to reuse the same idea in one episode. Readers can get bored, you know. 5. You should be aware of how well your current episode will be received by the readers off the top of your head.

Seriously though

You're a manga artist who just began your new series on a magazine.

You can obtain ideas by fishing and implement them into each episode of your manga. But you'll need enough time during the week to use these ideas in your manga, so don't get lost in fishing for new ideas!

It was fun to catch different fishes. I did not get the concept of using or releasing fishes, but it was fun. Well done

I really like the simple graphics and the overall ambiance of the game, the idea was really creative. Great job !

I love the punny gameplay idea of fishing for ideas, this could be really fun to upon more so you have to be more tactical, maybe the story needs to be in a certain way and you need to plan ahead and strategize more.

Solid entry with cute and effective graphics, great work!

I managed to last until week 17! I liked that the well of ideas slowly ran dry the longer your series went on, and I just generally thought the fishing mechanic was pretty fun on its own :)

I fell into a really satisfying loop where I had enough fish in my backlog that I could use a bunch at the beginning of the day to get my ratings up, and then spend the rest of my time fishing, and it was really relaxing!

Conceptually? FANTASTIC adorable idea, so silly, I love it.
The gameplay itself was a little repetive and bland, but still, I think this has a lot of potential as an idea

Love the idea! I wound up accidentally closing the fish menu often so a dedicated key might have helped me. Great job with personifying (fishifying?) the manga aspects into fish :D

Haha, nice little game. I found some of the fish hitboxes to be a bit small/random, but enjoyed the entire premise of the game.
Are and music was minimal but nice, easy to listen to and look at.
Great job, good luck!

Big fan of the hand drawn graphics.

I made it to week 9. Seems like there are not enough different fish to make a good show as you move from week to week, which I guess is the point. It is a very interesting concept though.

Music was super loud for me, a problem I often encounter in Unity WebGL builds for some reason.

Also, the "Start creating your first episode" button wouldn't work for me after I lost. Had to refresh the page to play again.

@0x746564 Ah you're right. I guess I never replayed when I was testing.

I attempted to convey the author running out of ideas in two ways - increased number of creative blocks (plastic bags that waste your time) and decreased number of ideas (fish). Perhaps increasing the number of creative blocks would've been enough, and the fish number can be somewhat consistent, so that it would be hard but not mathematically impossible to fulfill the expectation after about 10 weeks.

The fishing mechanic is nice, but the surrounding plot is even nicer! Music and graphics fit good together. A enjoyable moment of relaxation. Thanks!

the concept itself was funny. The art was really cute and the music and sounds match them well. Not really much I could add, maybe try to relate the two ideas even more. But yeah, funny concept great game! Thank you!

Nice idea. An unusual metaphor, I think, but it felt weirdly logical as I played.

I liked how the "funny moment" fish were the smallest and hardest to catch.

Music's nice and chill, art's entirely consistent and the gameplay seems to work completely as intended. My only complaint would probably be that I'd like to be able to select what to do with the fish (use, release, keep) with the A, D, and S keys, since that's what I'm using to play the rest of the game. Getting my mouse involved feels unnatural.

Really good work overall, though, I enjoyed it!

Fun little game, I like the whole manga series plot on top of the gameplay. All the warnings and praises were very nice. The art is nice, the music is pretty basic. I know you're supposed to aim at the mouth, but I still think the hitboxes are waay too small. I would like to use/release the fish with my keyboard (especially since pressing keyboard while choosing an option seems to make the fish disappear). Still it was pretty fun :) I run my series for 10 weeks with a disappointing ending.

I love the idea behind the game. Nice art style and music, too. Fun, little game. Nice job!

This is a super nice entry. Very creative idea, well-executed. Loved the simple but pretty and meaningful graphics. The music is repetitive but unlike most repetitive game jam music, it didn't get into our nerves after several minutes playing!

Gameplay was fun for a while, but would need something to spice it up (if it was meant to be a longer game, that is).

Thanks for making and sharing it!

It's a fun concept, I like the metaphor. I think the idea might be that you're going to end up doing poorly no matter what, right? If so, that should be communicated a bit better - maybe something like "I know I'm a terrible manga artist, but I'm going to keep going as long as I can before they realize I have no talent!" at the beginning or snippets of text between weeks saying "I can feel myself starting to run out of ideas but I just want to keep the series running until I can't anymore". Without that sort of indication, it kind of felt like I was just bad at the game instead of that being the point.
