From Dust by tater-hater

[raw]
made by tater-hater for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

Objective: dodge obsticals, hunt birds for food, and get home before the dust storms envelope you!' Controls: Space to jump, click to shoot, and 'R' to restart.

This game is based loosely off my grandfather's experiences during the dust bowl in the 1920s and 1930s. At 8 years old, he would have to go hunting for rabbits on horseback so that he and his family could eat. The dust storms could block out the sun for up to three days, and the soil was unable to grow much of anything.

Be sure to leave your final score in the comments. that will be my ad hoc leaderboard. Screenshot 2022-04-03 173216.pngScreenshot 2022-04-03 173307.png

I made it home! Well done, I particularly liked the dust/sand effect on the left side of the screen

What a great theme! Got score 700 (would be good if the game showed you the score before reaching the end, maybe if you lose all your lives). Hitboxes are a little punishing, I'd suggest shrinking them a little so it doesn't have to be quite so exact.

I am really happy to see you included a distance to home. That gave me a clear goal to work towards and a sense that the game wasn't going to be endlessly repeating. Also the graphics were very charming.

I liked the gameplay and the tie in to your grandfather, very humbling. I also liked how the music was kinda melancholy to fit the theme. Nice job!

It took a few tries but I was able to beat the game with a score of 550! I think the game is well rounded, the animations, the scrolling scenery, the dust, the music, it all ties together nicely. Perhaps the gaps between some of the obstacles is a little too tricky.

Also, if you want to go for bonus points in the future, this game is a great candidate for some jump buffering to make it really feel good to play. :)

The music is very good, but the game itself feels limited gameplay vise, stiff and not very refined. It could use a little polish or more gameplay variety.

I missed some shoot's feedback, but the game is fun. I tried it until I finish =)

I cannot finish the game after many attempts so I cannot see my score but I was close (9 to home). I don't like that you can chain multiple hits. A good addition will be to add an invulnerability time after one hit.

Incredible how good your game looks even though the individual sprites are especially pretty! This is some talent! (Serious!) My main suggestion would be to have some feedback about hunting the birds, because as far as I could see, it made no difference hitting them or not.

Otherwise, a nice simple game. (Oh, and a nice source of inspiration!).

For a compo entry you're supposed to add a link to the source code (I think the jam is more flexible and doesn't require the source code).

I liked how the dust cloud appeared infront and behind the player, trying to manage shooting and jumping was an interesting challenge which I've not encountered really encountered in this particular style of runner game before. Overall not a bad entry!
