Doomsday Deviant's Date by ProbeProb

[raw]
made by ProbeProb for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Have you ever wondered how it would be to have a date as a demon during the apocalypse, trying to delay the world from ending while entertaining your date?

Then "Doomsday Deviant's Date" is all you are asking for :japanese_ogre:

How to play

Stay close to your significant other to get points. But don't get too comfortable! Your demon siblings will appear and cause mischief, advancing the apocalypse.

Use WASD or the Arrow Keys to Move Around and get to those brats. They might be destroying property, hunting other people or ruining someone else's selfie. When next to them follow the prompt and press E or F to send the demon away.

If you think that you are moving too slow use Space to Dash.

Controls

  • WASD or Arrows - Move
  • Space - Dash
  • Esc or P - Pause

Haha, great spin on the jam theme, its prob easiest to play with arrow keys + controls, might be a good idea to include them into the description (E,F, etc). Overall it looks and plays great, the dash is super satisfying :D

I liked it a lot. I was confused at first, but I got the hang of it once I knew what I was doing lol The music and sound effects really fit in, and I love how the game fit the theme.

Love the premise you have picked very unique. The game was fun, hectic and the Dash was very handy. Great Work.

This was a fun game, trying to stop the apocalypse so you can get on with your date is very Little Nicky. The music and mischievous snickering really sell the mood.

When fixing a hydrant, the confirm button pops up to get you to click on it. Something about clicking that button takes me out of the game. I can't put my finger on it exactly, I think it's probably because I'm in such a rush to go to the next thing, but then I have to fiddle with the UI.

I really enjoyed it!

What a great premise! I laughed when I sat down for the date and just had lil small talk. Unexpectedly clever and actually pretty fun to run around like a madman trying to keep it all together. I got 518 points!

@bougiebirdie Thank you for your kind words! It is a bit finnicky yes. I think you can press the spacebar to press the button, because it is selected automatically. So it should be a bit less cumbersome.

I loved the game so much, really fun idea and really good execution, my high score is 765 but i would really like to play this game more when i have some spare time. Also really liked the music it fit the game very well. Also i have a question how did you make the change of music sooo frickin seemless, i struggled with this a lot in our game and couldn't solve it with such a smooth solution soo im really intrested in how you did that. Great game, really enjoyed playing it.

I tried to use a controller, sadly the although the movement is mapped, the actions aren't.

So I swapped to keyboard, and it was pretty fun actually, way more than I initially expected

@greenpig Im happy to hear that. I guess you are refering to the switch between the action music and the date music. Firstly, I wrote both in the same key, G major. And second, the date music is roughly half the speed of the action music. So i guess that ties them together somewhat. Also the piano pick up at the beginning of the action music definitely helps.

Muy, muy divertido. Pase un buen rato ya no solo con el juego y sus mecánicas sino con los comentarios. Gráficamente aporta ese toque de humor, muy buena música y efectos de sonido.

A fun game! Really hilarious dialogue and sound effects are nice, though I guess I'd make them a little quieter in contrast to BGM. Gameplay is good as well, I enjoyed running around end fixing things for humanity :) GG!

Great game! An in-game tutorial would be much appreciated, BUT, I found that the rules were easy enough (for me at least) to catch onto in a few seconds. Near the end there's a feeling of hopelessness as your demon siblings devour the land with not much you can do about it, so I ignored them and just spent the last moments of earth talking to my date. Bittersweet ending?

@renge thank you! Yea it is kinda bittersweet. And it's interesting to see that you saw that not much could be done and chose to stay with your date (: Good choice!

@elvinn @albertoz Thank you :)
The goal is to collect points by standing on the circle next to your date. But since the time is running out and the apocalypse is near, you should resolve the problems caused by your siblings to get time:
a) Attack (sock-icon) find the attacking demon and press F if you are near
b) Hydrant press E four times to repair it
c) Selfie go to the demon which is sabotaging the selfie
(a and c are time-sensitive)
