Mayor Necrohamster by BinarySpark

[raw]
made by BinarySpark for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

SAVE YOUR PEOPLE FROM LIFE

Main Features

  • Be the mayor of a fledgling new town in Hamsteria.
  • Convert citizens to your cause and bring the gift of eternal life to all.
  • Decide how to rule your town in a huge collection of story events where you must make choices.
  • Branching mini-stories that lead to other events based on the choices you made.
  • Also, you're a hamster. Hamsters are cute. Do you like hamsters?
  • Who left all these :peanuts: peanuts here?

How to play

Mouse and keyboard is required.

  • Left-click to interact with stuff, select buildings, etc.
  • Right-click to cancel building placement or deselect buildings.

Keep your Unrest low - if your people are fed up, they will remove you by force! You win when you convert all your people (when you have no :twomenholding_hands: Population left). You lose when your :fire: Unrest is too high.

Build Shrines near your Houses to begin converting people. There are several other buildings you can use to control your :fire: Unrest, :twomenholding_hands: Population and :peanuts: Peanuts income. Check the tooltips for more info!

GAMEPLAY TIPS

Having trouble getting the City to listen? Here's a couple tips to help you out:

  • Many buildings react to each other if they are close by. For example, Shrines require Houses, and the Church is not enthused with occult structures... Abodes are like Houses, except the Church doesn't like them.
  • Avoid building near the Church at the start of the game. Many useful buildings, like Abodes and Mines, cause :fire: Unrest if they are near the Church.
  • Once you have some Taverns to help quell :fire: Unrest, deconstruct the Farms. Otherwise, the Farms will keep producing :twomenholding_hands: Population, which is bad because it keeps moving your goalpost.

Changelog

Version 1.1:

  • Fix a minor visual bug where the animated citizens would sometimes display a wrong animation frame.
  • Fix a few typos in story events.

Don't really catch the theme

@motti The theme is used in that you save your followers from dying - thus delaying the inevitability of death. But on the other hand, we don't worry that much about the theme tbh. Ideally, it's supposed to inspire, not to artificially limit.

Great game! The art style and the music are superb. I also like the humanistic approach with hamster, instead of going for regular humans. I would love to see bigger map, so I can build even more stuff, but I guess the bigger the map the harder it is to balance the whole thing. Good job with the game!

Really liked this game! I loved watching my city grow(and later fall :D). Music and art was very well done.

I'm surprised you guys managed to create this type of game in just 3 days! Great job!

Quite impressive to make a game like this in only a few days. Great overall atmosphere.

Loved the concept and story, the presentation is super impressive and all the sprites are beautiful! I got the hang of the mechanics after a while, but I think it could do with a little more of a tutorial at the start to get the player started off - this didn't stop me from having a great time though!

Really enjoyed this. I thought the events were a very nice touch. I'm guessing there is a pretty deep game underneath there somewhere, but you managed to capture its essence in a nice jam game. Good job!

the theme does feel somewhat absent, but nevertheless this is a really impressive jam game! loved it! :)

A somewhat flat city builder, redeemed by well-written story events and good art design.

Really solid game - was worrying I'd get into a loop of just being able to steamroll, but the random events always kept me on my toes. Not the most relevant to the theme, but I can see the inspiration.

Remarkably well done, especially for a game jam. I enjoyed listening to the soundtrack whilst playing, and it's nicely written. Of course I kept the mayor's default name.

I wish I could play this game cause it's really cute and interesting. But unfortunately, when I opened it on my laptop, all the settings and windows with information were very small, so I couldn't read anything.

Great game. Really detailed! Seems like the kind of game you would want to continue to work on. Great job!

A bit unintuitive for me but I managed to enjoy it nonetheless.

Great game within the jam. I can't imagine how you managed to do so much
It would be nice to see a continuation of the project in the future.

It is not very fun to play yet, but the events, music and plot brighten it up. Not enough rewind time!

Many thanks to the developers for the game! You are cool!

This is a really lovely game! I'm amazed at the amount of events that you managed to include. It took me a bit to understand all the systems (I didn't even notice the tax meter until I was halfway done) but it was fun to play around with and there were a few tense moments where it seemed like my unrest was going to go too high. Great work!

Impressive how much you managed to have done in just 72 hours. Loved the gameplay, graphics, the soundtrack and the random events. The goal is a bit unclear though, I supose it is to convert all the hamsters into undead? Overall a great entry, good job!
