A Dance with Death by kleinzach

[raw]
made by kleinzach for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Upon death, a human receives an opportunity to play The Game of Death. Though Death shall prevail, perhaps you may delay the your inevitable end if just for a while.

Drag to place your pieces onto the first row of the board, and Death will do the same. After each turn, your pieces will advance, and then Death's. The pieces will always move forward until they are blocked, or if they can capture an enemy piece diagonally forward. Should three enemy pieces make it to the your end of the board, your time will end.

Interesting concept, the idea of playing "chess" or something with the death is very interesting it is a powerful image.

The music is kind of fun as well some sort of creepy waltz jeje :)

I have 1 question though: - Why do my pieces disappear when I click on them once they are a bit further in the map? Is it normal? (Sorry if the question is naïve)

Great entry, thanks for creating this game :)

@muriel I'm glad you liked the game! The pieces disappearing is actually a bug, and I made a new build to fix that now. Thanks for pointing that out!

While the game is very simple and it is easy to understand, the presentation makes it more interesting. The presentation is a bit too close to Inscription to my liking but I think it is different enough to be called its own game.

I got stuck multiple times with my pieces disappearing so I hope you can fix that soon!

Interesting concept! I like using the classic idea of playing chess with death in a different way, using familliar strategies but in a new way, fun!

Good work!

Pawns but wrong answers only.

I love it. Great use of a chess board.

Beautiful. The board, the pieces, it all looked very tactile. The mechanics are straight forward, and work great. The biggest problem with the game, as with so many with this theme, is that it's just a "hold on until you lose" game. So I play for a bit, until I stop trying and lose to see what the end screen is. Great submission, just a shame about the theme.

I like the strategy elements and trying to find what patterns work best against the waves. The music and art both convey a very dark tone, just beautiful. Very well done, high marks in every category!

I like the unique take on the theme. The graphics look great and the music is nice. The gameplay can be a little bit repetitive, but it's still a really neat concept and the mood is very well done.

Nice idea for the theme! The mechanics are simple, and the game is a bit short, but I enjoyed playing. The mood was well set with the music too. Overall a solid game!
