made by n8b for LD33 (JAM)
A different shoot them up :

- If your toxic dream (mouse pointer) is enougth strengt (big), you can catch one human, move him, and he will be convert to an overdimensional tentacle when you realease the mouse bouton. They kill human instead of you.

- Tank tentacle grow up, fighter's tentacle grow down, others grow left.

- You follow your dream, tempting to increase your materiality by catching the human souls, but if bullet hit you on your eyses, she decrease.

-> THIS ORIGINAL VERSION IS IN THE SOURCE FOLDER

Thuesday 25 : I've fixed the final score bug and credited Stencyl and Gimp, but cannot solve fullscreen mode. The original folder can be downloaded here :
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ntxuoa2zpkaot32/AADZf4odoHTbjrvjh8uF7iJWa?dl=0

->THIS LOW DEBUG VERSION IS THE SECOND LINK : THE ".flv flashplayer (recommended)" (WITH REDUCED GRAPHIC RESOLUTION).
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE .FLV AND THEN PUT IT DIRECTLY IN YOUR BROWSER (THEY ARE USUALY ABLE TO PLAY .FLV) , BUT IF YOU WANT TO BE SURE HAVING NO FREEZE, IT'S BETTER TO PLAY IT ON A FLASHPLAYER INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER.
FREEZING HAPPENS ONLY IN THE HIGHTEST SCORE, WITH THE INCREASE OF THE NUMBER OF SHOOT.

Thursday 27 : As asked, Cthulhu Fhtagn can now be played directly with your web brother on Kongregate. I apologise for the delai, it's the first game i've finished, all is new for me.

During devellopment, I've only test this on flash player, but online fluidity is down, there's jerk, so I've change graphic resolution and somme other thing but it's not enougth.

Friday 28 : I've solve the freezing by reducting bullet's number, but this force me to change the logic for an equal difficulty. For me, it's more than the autorized debugging (sorry)... and I still prefer the original!

-> THIS IS THE "KONGREGATE (SLOW)" VERSION

Sunday 31 : Detailled instructions.

You're Cthulhu and you've ben invocated on the Earth... And you want to stay the longest you can! The begining is difficult, you are not totally incarned, also you can make a 1000s game before a 100s game. My best is one hour long - on the net, with all the freeze that happens sometimes...

Each time a bullet hit your eyes, your reality decrease, and you become darker... until you disapears. But each time you eat a soul, she increase.

It's a bad idea I've had, but the mouse control your movements and your attack in the SAME TIME! I will change it in the future, make that when you catch one human, you don't move, but during the contest, this have to stay. So don't try to escape the bullets, it's just impossible, remember instead that you can win life by eating souls.

Your mouse pointer is the dream you use to reveal your horrible truth to humans. Bigger your dream power (from 0 to 6), bigger the pointer... But each time you use it on human, your dream power fall down. And each time you click, Cthulhu move, even if you don't want.

Catching one human cost 2 dream dot, increased until 5 if he is veteran (in yellow). Each human that has left out comme back right powerfull, and as a mesure that the game progresses somme new arrivals will be veteran directly.

If you've not enough dream power, you can't catch human. In future version, I have to show the catchable human, but today, just take care to the pointer size.

CATCHING HUMAN CONVERT THEM : They discovers the multidimensional nature of soul * and are transformed into extradimensional tentacle. It's those tentacle that killl humans

If you've not enough dream power, you can't catch human. In future version, I have to show the catchable human, but today, just take care to the pointer size.

Catching human only CONVERT them : They discovers the multidimensional nature of soul * and are transformed into extradimensional tentacle. It's those TENTACLE that KILL humans : You are not fully incarnate, you can't kill directly. The conversion advent only when you release the mouse, so you can move the human before.

So the real challenge is to manage the tentacle creation :
- Creating tentacle each time you can be interesting, but save your dream power also.
- Using veteran costs too much, but sometime you've no choice. It's better to "save" one human from tentacle just for change him onto a new tentacle.
- Tank and Fighters gives Vertical tentacle, ideal for killing helicopter. Helicopter or tank are good for the faster figthers.
- It's better to place the tentacle at the right, but sometime, place him onto a band is better.
- When you place a tentacle, place Cthulhu behind, and click behind him : also you can move him back at the same speed that the tentacle, and he will be just at the good place for eat the soul.
- If you can, catch the human where there's soul to eat, and not where you want to place the tentacle : you can keep the prisoner as long as you want.

I must confess that I have not really planned all these tactics when I was creating the game.

* Read the four Lovecraft's "randolf Carter" novel - in french, they are intelligently grouped in the collection "demons and wonders" : The Statement of Randolph Carter - The Silver Key - Through the Gates of the Silver Key - The Dream Quest of Unknow Kadath

Nice but the mechanics are quite cryptic, maybe a tutorial or just more informations on how to attack would be helpfull.

Dodging the bullets is really hard, but I love the graphics

I wasn't sure what to do originally. Could write some instructions for others please.

Also the graphics were quite jarring.

Cool mechanics once you understand them. Took me a bit to realize I should transform enemies at the right side of the screen as I was always cowering at the left.

Nice idea, but some sort of tutorial or explanation would have been really helpful.

Why not publish the game online directly ? I'm afraid you'll lose some tester who won't know how to run your swf!

I liked the design of the game, especially the look of the pointer. The look of the monster itself, too. Clearer tutorial would be nice.

I'm a little lost. I like the lovecraftian theme and all, but the gameplay was pretty hard to grasp. It could do with some work, but it's good for a first try. Good luck in future!

Very nice! I love how in addition to dodging bullets, we can eat the humans! Good job on the graphics! The game's pretty hard, though.

Rainbow text is a neat effect, but also a little hard to read.

Instructions are kinda fuzzy. Clicking seems to make me move towards the click point, I think? But then it also grabs vehicles sometimes, I think? And sometimes it makes tentacles appear, possibly? Not sure.

Cool style tho!

Today, my best score : 3692 seconds - well, just one hour!

But I'm the author...

That show me that difficulty increase not enougth. I have to solve it for the post ludum dare version...

If you have ideas about what I can change or add for a better game, in any way, I will be happy to note that (in easy langage, I speak English like the french frog I'm 8D )

That show too that I've to rewrite the explanation I've placed on Kongregate and here...

The rainbow text was trippy and hard to read close up, reading from afar was slightly easier. Maybe a solid font colour on a contrasting background would be easier to read.

As for the gameplay, it was unclear at first and the player feedback was lacking. Some particle effects on damage or even some sound effects would have worked nicely with this game. Hope my feedback helps!

Feedback always help!

I plane to create a font - or maybe emulate a font with animated tile - with reverses value. Human eyes have evolved to see black silhouettes against the bright background of the sky ... But the letters drawing would deserve to be reworked too.

Everybody says me a tuto is needed, I will make one, but the Challenge is that I find effect that make them useless. Even for alternative controls that I tested, I am not satisfied.

I will certainly add sound now that I've time...

Thanks for this return.

A bit sorry that you should change your game which just meet
3 to 7 copy&paste enemies, then fight boss, -> max hp -> fight boss -> new powerup kill all 40 enemies -> cancel powerup fight boss -> max hp -> boss -> max hp -> double boss -> max hp etc. Just random spawn is too stupid.

I'm sorry but I didn't understood how to play correctly the game :/

The graphics are ok, but the parallax is kind of wierd.
You should consider to make the player enter the kind in some "controlled" environement, so you can make sure it does understand the basis of the gameplay.

Interesting concept. The feedback loop needs to be stronger. I loved the colorful text effect in for the narration! Great job for your first Ludum entry, keep it up!

A really good idea but the overall quality is a bit so-so. With sound and some in-game instructions I honestly think this could be quite good. The concept alone is worth a lot and you clearly care a lot about the backstory for this creation.

Art style is interesting. Also the idea behind the gameplay has potential. However I had real problems figuring out how to play even after reading the instructions. Seperated moving and grabbing mechanics would really improve the game. Also maybe decrease the difficulty in the beginning a bit. That might make it easier to figure out what to do.
But for a game made by only one person I think it's a pretty decent entry. Keep it up.
