Rockmageddon by hunttis

[raw]
made by hunttis for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Oh no, meteors are approaching the earth. Everyone is going to die.

Good thing we have this shield protecting us. Rotate it around with left/right arrow keys to stop the meteors.

You must evacuate as much people as you can. Save the rich... I mean, save the people with evacuation ships by launching the ships with the up arrow key.

NOTE: Added a post-jam build with adjusted difficulty. Play the jam build for evaluation and the post-jam build for... fun, I guess? :D

Controls TL;DR:

Left/Right arrow: Rotate shield. Up Arrow: Launch ships

Fun game! I like having to balance not only the positioning of the shield for two objectives, but also how many portions of the shield you should break to be able to better position in the future!

I think the meteor swarm sped up more than it needed to in the end. It was cool to transition from aiming rockets around the shield to aiming rockets around the asteroids, but it would also be cool to watch the lower rate of meteors go from "not a big deal" to "oh no, now we're out of resources to stop what wasn't a big threat before"

I rated 5 on Humor even before I started the game because of the description. I enjoyed launching spaceships to meteors and see them die together since I am chaotic evil. This is the most funny game I have seen in this jam. Noice job.

Those rocks sure started coming in the end. Great take on the theme with nice and simple gameplay.

For some reason I expected a traditional tower defense but this mechanic was much more interesting, balancing the shields was a real challenge. I wish you could go on for a bit longer though :)

Thank you for the kind comments, everyone! And yes, the rate at which the meteors/asteroids arrive spikes up pretty soon and makes things perhaps a bit too difficult too fast. We had a problem of having the game too easy for quite a while and made a change to the difficulty quite late in development, and I think it should be adjusted a notch back in the old direction.

I like the idea, it's quite original and having to balance between protecting earth and saving people is cool!

Ooh, this was a lot of fun! I like the balance of saving the shield to allow a meteor to hit a place it's already struck, and moving the shield out of the way to let the ships through. Very fun gameplay, and it perfectly fits the theme. Great work!

That is cool!
Solid graphics and great music!
I like the game mechanics, having to balance the holes in the shield for the pods to escape and to keep the shield intact. Great!
Balancing does not feel good: Pods at beginning appear so fast, that I have to loose some. End (many "rocks") comes to soon.
But cool!
Congratulations for an innovative, well playable game.
... stressfull game 🙃

Haha! This is most probably my favourite entry so far, so simple yet so effective. Would be interested to see what other mechanics could be implemented, maybe a a cooldown timer for enabling more shields. As currently the optimal player will loose at constant rate.

The story made me chuckle.

Sound effects, graphics and music were all well done.

Gameplay was fun, but as others mentioned the difficulty curve could use some work. Hard to balance games like this, especially in a jam.

Loved it, core gameplay worked well and a funny (and dark) premise. It was kind of sad at the end when the asteroids got so fast that there was basically nothing to do but watch.

Nice one! I like the humor and the idea is nice and simple. Totally inline with the theme!
