The Coup by Darylsteak

Beneath the surface, something is brewing.

In the far off South East Asian nation of Malapang, where the rainforests are impregnable and the beaches and great,

there is talk of an impending military coup.

Of the nation's 7 top generals, 3 are planning to overthrow the monarchy. As one of the 7, you must find out who among your peers is part of the plot, and who is ignorant. Prepare your troops, curry support from other generals, and stand fast before defending against the inevitable.

Controls: - Click on the photos on the bottom to access your fellow generals. - "Sabotage" allows you to sabotage someone, if they are a rebel this will delay the coup. - "Spy on" allows you to potentially gain intel on someone, this can be done multiple times. - Clicking on a highlighted part of the map allows you to access your troops. - "Move" allows you to move a battlegroup. - "Give" allows you to give a battlegroup to a fellow general, buying them to your side once the coup begins (assuming they aren't a rebel)

The rest should hopefully be self explanatory.

This is such an interesting game. I really liked the military-intel theming. Be sure you survey everyone well, future players!

This is really cool. I really dig the aesthetic and the gameplay is fun. I recommend adding some more instructions to the page though. The rules aren't self apparent.

Pretty neat idea! I like how the inevitable coup isn't just a game over, but rather a shift to a second phase of the game. I also like the idea of spying on generals and trying to discern what side they were on. I will admit that I wasn't fully sure what was going on or what I should be doing at times during the first phase. But I think this setup has some real potential!

I really like this game! I thought a coup would be an interesting theme that some people would take on, and I think you executed it well! Though, I got confused at the beginning, it said 2 turns till coup and later jumped to 5. Don't know if it was intentional, but I didn't do much those last few days and did well, might've been a fluke.

The CRT-like effect works suuuper well here! Really feels like some old 60's intelligence reconnaissance mission!

Fun idea, and the look/feel of the game was really cool. I liked the wargames feel to the interface. The game was a bit too easy to beat, just spy on everyone until you know the traitors, sabatoge, then give your army to the remaining loyal ones. If it had a bit more depth to the game design, especially the spying, I think this would be a really fun game. I can imagine a variant where the troop movements really matter--is that general moving their units there to defend against against a coup, or to start one?

I found a bug where I could take as many actions as I wanted and my actions went negative. Also everytime I played when the first coup happened everytime I clicked End Turn the number of turns until the next coup would keep going up

@kinart @poetril Thanks for the feedback and for playing!

@jimmothysanchez Yeah, ideally I would have added a tutorial but sadly ran out of time. Thx for playing and the feedback!

@superpokeunicorn Mhm, I wanted make a game where the thing happening simply wasnt the end of it. Sadly I wasnt able to add a proper tutorial before the deadline so had to settle with the current help system. Might try developing a proper game from this in the future. Thx for the feedback and for playing!

@witherk I was worried I wouldn't make the deadline haha. Unfortunately couldnt add a tutorial in time, the coup time jumps up in the event you manage to sabotage a rebel general. Thanks for trying out and for playing!

@vorpalsnark Thank you and thx for the feedback!

@boxedmeatrevolution I wanted to add the troop movement idea! This game idea kinda was sitting in the back of my head for a bit and this is basically a lite version of that. Perhaps in the future if I do decide to go ahead with a relatively large game that will probably be added. Thanks for the valuable feedback and for playing!

@toastertot Dammit, figured there were gonna be a coup of bugs. I'll go work it out and pop up a patched version. Thx for the bug report!

Very interesting game, the whole presentation of it was done exceptionally well. Terminal themed games are usually a good time. Fitting the theme was done very well as well, I've realized from playing this game that games that fit theme in a way that isn't just you inevitably lose are pretty creative. You're delaying the inevitable coup but the gameplay continues afterwards in the war game. The game difficulty itself feels like it needs a bit of tweaking to make it extra fun. As it is right now it's very easy, spy on generals until you find the traitors, sabotage them in the meanwhile, and then just give your troops to the loyal ones and win turn 1. Maybe some penalty or limit on spying? A minor point because it's very hard to balance games during a jam, otherwise a pretty fun game.

@darylsteak I think the turns until the coup broke because I took too many actions? I ended up playing it again and I really enjoyed it! I love the art direction you took and the strategy of it

In the manual => "Program" in english :p . "The arrow* keys".

It's sad there is no music or only few sound(s), where you in a team ? (I'm asking because there is no other name attached to this participation, and it's not a "Compo", so we cant know)

I won a game, but I did not really got the point.

I like that it's happening in asia, it's original.

I dont know what to do when I have the pen in the hand, I had to reload the game because I felt stuck.

The game is original I guess, but I cant say I liked it

Great game, however it would be great if you could write how to play it on itch as I got confused fast. I love the marker and those computer sound effects. Great job

Little confusing at first but once I got the hang of it I really enjoyed it. This was one of the most innovative games I've played this jam, and I loved the graphics and sounds. Great work!

The graphics were excellent and the sound effects worked well with the game. It could have done with some background music and some more actions to engage the player, but besides that it was well done!
