Meteoroid Menace by raedeo

title.png

Try to stay in Orbit! With a limited amount of fuel, that can only be replenished by mining Asteroids, you will have to evade both Meteoroids and the most dastardly of enemies, gravity itself.

How to play

In short: Point & Click

In long: * Point your ship with your mouse. * Press the left mouse button to accelerate into the pointed direction. * Mine blue asteroids for fuel. * Evade red meteoroids, the sun and the great purple unknown, or you will die! * The top left shows you how much fuel you have left, be conservative or you might not be able to move when you need to. * The line from your ship shows you an approximation of where you will end up if you do nothing.

Try to survive as long as possible. As time goes on, more and more meteoroids will spawn, so watch out and have fun!

(Note: Since there is no sound in space, this game has non either. Totally not because I didn't find the time.)

Tools

  • Unity 2020.3.31f1
  • Visual Studio Community 2022
  • Gimp 2.10.30
  • Notepad++

Things to improve

  • Sound
  • Fuel gauge bigger/closer to the ship (Maybe integrated into it?)
  • A bigger fuel tank, so you are not out of it too fast. Maybe a very slow backup engine?
  • Highscore for time survived.
  • Better ship / meteoroid collision (currently you only die if the meteoroid touches the center of the ship)
  • Make the front of the ship more visible
  • Startup screen with example movement/game to give an example of how to play.
  • Adjust difficulty scaling, the beginning is too easy/there is nothing much to do. Then later on it ramps up a bit too much (personally I've never gotten past 5mins, because some random meteoroid hits you)

I like the simple concept, however the game is kinda janky. After a while I just couldnt move anymore no matter how much I was clicking, the collisions also aren't too consistent as I had a red asteroid go straight through me and nothing happened. Some sound effects would be nice though (even tho its in space)

Solid base. No doubt some tricky math with the orbits etc. I would have preferred keyboard controls, more realistic than being about to turn super fast via the mouse in any direction. That outer edge blue stuff looks really neat, some sort of shader? With more time, I reckon you could spruce the graphics up quite a bit. Great job for a compo entry.

Dear raedeo,

The concept is simple.
Unfortunately it is boring.

But don't discouraged.
Next time you'll do better

With best regards

I really like this, I like the space-themed games, It reminds me to a previous Ludum Dare entry I made in the past (LD42, time flies!)
As feedback, maybe I would made a larger fuel tank, it feels bad to be out of fuel so soon if you didn't catch the gameplay the first time you play

Hi, I liked the game, but difficulty increase should be more player demanding. I ventured out near the purple fog and stayed there for 3 minutes (maybe increase gravity pool?). This purple cloud was pretty, but kinda out of space (pun not intended) in comparison to particles from asteroids. Keep it up

My best score is 72 seconds. It was my first play. Next ten times I couldn't reach that much even if I moved counterclock-wise (looks like it's easier to collect fuel that way)
Very good game, I like it!

159s! I like it, I wish there was maybe one more thing to think about in the game. I thought it was really nice that the meteors follow the gravity of the sun and fall in just like the ship does :)

Intersting little game, but not as exciting or challenging as it could be I think. The amount of fuel and control feels low and a bit to boring. Perhabs faster gameplay would be nicer, since a lot of time is just spent Idly waiting for danger to apear.
still the mechanics at play here work well and the game is easy to understand.

well done ^^

The idea is interesting and I would like to see it more developed and polished, from what I saw you have several points to improve that is very good xD. Well done and keep up the good work!!!

I honestly really enjoyed this game! Love the trajectory line! It seems like you have most of the improvement points down already. I hope you continue to expand on this game, there are a lot of possibilities now that you have the main mechanic built out.
